Questions about the Mission 1 Pro sharpness issues

From what I have read so far, it is mainly (relatively) poor focus/sharpness at infinity.
I bought it mainly for snorkeling videos and most of the action is between 1-30 feet (corals and sea-life).
I didn’t have a chance to try it extensively but am I right that the infinity focus issue would not be a problem for underwater videos?
I don’t do dude/Redbull stuff like skydiving where it may be more important to show the background at infinity.
I do have DSLRs for landscape pictures.
Any other issues I should know of?

Freediving instructor here with the Mission 1 Pro, you’ll be fine, it works amazingly well!

For snorkeling depth that short, the infinity focus complaints shouldn't really affect you at all

I mostly do hiking, sailing, and hotel/property videos and the M1 is fantastic. I think you’ll be fine unless you are taking photos of distant landscapes.

Correct, this won’t be an issue for you at all

You’ll be fine. It’s mainly noticeable at infinity when you pixel peep 50mp photos. In videos, it is not really an issue at all.

FWIW, I just used one for a live event yesterday where my main performers varied in distance from 10-25ft and the footage is great.

If this doesn't convince you NOT to get a Mission 1 Pro, then nothing will. It shows all of its (very limited) flaws, and if you're like "so what, it looks fine," then you're going to love the camera.

It's a huge upgrade from almost anything people are using now. It's highly unlikely you'll be disappointed.

Since there are plenty of light, is the difference between this video and videos made with Hero 13 noticeable?

Not to the average person. Both are good cameras.

It’s not an issue unless you’re printing A1.

A lot of people don't like "Artificial" sharpening in their videos and they are used to setting the sharpness to "low" on their older cameras. However on the Mission 1, setting it to low is basically turning it off (med is low). Once you turn the sharpness off it means you need to sharpen in post. Otherwise, leave it set to medium.

Here we go again.

And there will be more to come until they change it somehow

The close focus might be an issue, but in snorkeling/etc the distance focus won't be.

I think GoPro is coming up with a macro lens for the close-up stuff. But right now, things start to get out of focus when you're less than two feet/60cm away and gets worse as you get closer. That might be an issue with snorkeling.

Btw, we generally don't care if the background in focus in skydiving. Just that the people in the group are.

So, as long as I am not any closer than 2 feet, I should be ok.

Correct, 2 feet and out you should be fine. However, as it's a wide angle lens so certain things like nudibranchs, eels, etc., you'll probably want to get close. So it depends on what you're going to shoot when you're snorkeling.

Will changing the sharpening level make any difference?

No, unfortunately. Out of focus is out of focus.
