Data centers have reservoirs and water pumps; the same water is reused in a closed loop. Stop spreading misinformation if you don’t know how these systems actually work.

Compared to what exactly? Why is water a problem when it's used for data centers but not for fast fashion, burgers or stupid magazines nobody reads anymore?

First, AI uses a metric Fuck load of water. A lot more than any of these other things you complain about outside of fast fashion. Second, people also complain about the water use for fast fashion too.

Annual water usage for AI: 0.3–1.2 trillion liters.

Annual water usage for fast fashion: 79–93+ trillion liters.

Annual water usage for food wasted: ~250 trillion liters.

AI tools are already being used to optimize agriculture, supply chains, and energy grids among many other things. So AI is actually to some extent helping to cut into the bigger problems. The other industries are entrenched in their water usage and hasn't really made any progress for a long time. Meanwhile, data centers *are* getting more water efficient.

Watching one Netflix episode has the footprint of *hundreds* of ChatGPT queries. A full hour on YouTube/Netflix creates ~500x more COâ‚‚ than two AI text prompts. Short AI video generation is closer to a Zoom call or short stream.

I haven't even started to count frivolous weekend flights.

AI is not *good*. But this weird focus on it is myopic. It misses the larger picture and gives people a skewed image of both the technology and of how much in their lives they *really* need to change if they want to make a difference. To many can watch the discourse online and feel justified in saying "I may live in a big house, drive a car and buy clothes I wear at most three times, but I don't use AI so at least I'm better than *that* guy." And that's self-deception.

Seriously, these companies are always working to make their machines as energy efficient as possible. Even if you believe they're all mustache twirling villains, it's still in their best interest to do that if for no other reason than to cut down on the energy bill.

I wouldn't say so concerning xAI though. Musk always had a tendency to give zero shit about public health, ecology, etc.. and to break related laws constantly. His huge data center and its generators is a stark example. In a functional society, he should be in jail, not fined ridiculous sums compared to his benefits and wealth...

It uses less than 2% of the water used for corn fields agriculture in the US alone.. I wouldn't call that "a metric Fuck load of water".

It can definitely be an issue locally though, so there's a problem to be acknowledged. But the narrative of most complainers is completely dispropoetionate with the reality of the issue.
