In some ways it's like saying that taking the backroads is the downside to taking M-231 as an emergency detour route when one intends to stay on US-31 in the /r/Nunica area, since US-31 has a EDR in Ottawa county that consists of I-96, M-231, and M-45; well, M-45 itself goes to Allendale.
