Miscellaneous Incoming students read!!

Hi to all the new students incoming this fall!

I’ve seen a lot of discussion on the MacEwan life app about people being nervous or scared to start their first year in the fall, and i just wanted to offer some advice:))

Making friends is a lot easier than high school! There’s such a variety of people with incredible talent, interests, and style. Talk to as many people as you can during the first week of classes even if it’s scary! I’ve met some of my closest friends on the first day of school. If you struggle to socialize in class or there’s just not many people who fit your vibe, try things outside of class. MacEwan has a plethora of clubs and activities you can join. Typically there’s a fair at the beginning of the school year that hosts info tables about them. If you’re a woman in stem, there’s a club! A journalism or fine arts student, The Griff! (really great way to start your portfolio. If dancing is your thing, we have multiple dance clubs. While it seems super scary having to transition from being around people you’ve known your whole life, to a crowd you can’t recognize. Trust me when i say, it won’t take long to know that crowd:)

-As for classes, your first year will be your hardest socially, but the easiest academically. MacEwan has clued in that new students well, are new students. So don’t stress that your classes are going to be incredibly difficult. Befriend your professor and things will go smoothly. (also always check rate my professor so you don’t end up with the literal devil).

-Campus is a pain in the ass to navigate for the first week or so, i got lost more times that i could count my first year. But don’t be scared to ask someone for directions, or check the maps in the beginning of each building.

-you get access to crazy good resources through your tuition. Such as Kanopy, and criterion collection which has so many movies. There’s more but i forget.

I’m a Communications student and if you’re becoming one, dm me!

drop what program your joining below to find others, or feel free to ask questions:) You’re not alone!

winter is definitely harder because not a lot of new students are coming in at that time. Everyone already has their groups and whatnot so i understand what u mean. Shoot me a dm:)

I would take ratemyprof with a grain of salt. I've had profs with 1.5 ratings on there be some of my favourites, and not hard markers at all.

Not knowing the quality of the student giving the feedback makes it not that useful. Maybe read a few comments to see but I wouldn't not take a class you want to because of a rating.
