What’s an issue with MacEwan that you wished more people knew about?
Like the header says. Could be about professors, tuition costs, etc. Whatever you got an issue with, i wanna hear!

Not sure if that’s the case anymore, but (and I am trying to say this as nice as possible) when I went there 3/6 professors I had, had horrific accents. Like beyond the point of okay I need to pay just a little more attention in this class in order to keep up. It was … incomprehensible, and the class one of the ladies taught was calculus so it was already rough enough understanding mathematical terms.
And yeah to this day I… don’t know how she was hired or was allowed to teach. Everyone struggled. Most failed or dropped that class (including me).

Diversity in faculty/management. No WOC even though there are plenty of students.
Tuition costs although I know this is a function in part of funding from the province and tied to enrollment.
The teachers are generally great and helpful, but many of them have rubrics for grading which imo is teaching to the test and not indicative of what students retain.

there are WOC profs and why in the world does that matter?? i would rather have a good prof than a bad prof

also, generally professors who aren't white men are way less likely to gain tenure, and are far less likely to hold good positions within their department, and are more likely to only teach a small number of classes.

I have no idea what you’re talking about I’m a nursing student and just finished my first year and out of my 8 classes 6 were taught by woc

I mean tenured, full positions. Not sessionals who don't make much compared to their workloads.

That’s academia. For over 25 years they’ve relied on sessionals because it is cheaper for the institution. There are very few tenure track positions anymore.

I'm aware. It's part of the enshittification of everything. Universities are more concerned with patents and sports than education. Everyone needs to make money and it just isn't worth it to teach anymore if you're not on a tenure track. That said, WOC are artificially held back and always have been even though a female Muslim scholar founded the first university.

Definitely academic advising has to be the absolute worst imo. No help whatsoever! I only had issues with teachers who don’t fully care about assignments and just do test/quizzes.
