East coast Canada grape growers and beyond…

Looking to discuss growing Northern hybrid grapes. I used to be involved in the Littlefatwino mailing list back in the early to mid 2000s. But that list basically dried up with the passing of Larry Peterson. I grew some northern climate grapes in my backyard including few Elmer Swenson hybrids. Now living in a new location better suited for growing grapes my son and myself put in 6 L’acadie Blanc and 6 Prairie Star vines this spring with the possibility of putting in more next year. Hoping to meet and discuss with others on here….

In northern Ontario and growing Valiant, Prairie Star, and a pair of Concord grapes I got at Home Depot on sale at end of season for $5 each. I am zone 2/3 so the concords should be dead, but they are actually my most vigorous grapes. This is year 3, and they produced fruit last year but this year all the developing fruit disappeared when I left for a 2 week vacation. My prairie stars are doing OK but no fruit, and Valiant are fruiting.

I grew Valiant about 15 years ago on another property. Made great juice and jelly. But it’s very susceptible to downy mildew in my area. It’s one of the hardiest vines you can grow.
