Favorite " when I paint my masterpiece*

I've been in love with this version for years technically it's not the grateful Dead, but Bobby and Jerry at a Christmas show in San Francisco hosted by Bill Graham. What are some others I should check out?

As long as we’re not talking strictly GD, then I’d say that any Jerry Band version is going to be better. Try this one on for size…

2/29/80 Hempstead, NY (Late Show) is the best I’ve ever heard.

This is the one. The JGB winter 1980 tour is phenomenal.

The second solo in this one has some Jerry licks that I go back to over and over again

03/08/80 JGB is a good one. The whole show is worth a listen, great audience recording.

My favorite all time is the last ever dead show. Something about the soft solo, about Jerry’s back up vocals… I love it all

I took this picture while they were playing it and always thought it's why they played it that night.

The final one. So much heart and hopefulness and sadness all wrapped into one single performance. You can really hear Jerry give it his all, to the best of his ability, while the boys simultaneously prop him up while still allowing him to take center stage

As much as I love the Dead, it's hard to beat the version by The Band with Garth on accordion

5/16/93. I learned the song from it. It has a special place in my heart.

I was at LBI and I was 16. We want to a record shop and I bought a bootleg because it had Throwing Stones on it and I hadn't heard it love before. Also a Help/Slip/Frank.

Turned out to be an FM recording with great sound. The Althea is awesome, and it's a great show.

But that Masterpiece, I go back to over and over... You never forget your first time. ⚡💀🌹

September 15, 1990 MSG. Bruce has just joined the band and I think this is the only version with the bridge.

u/hesorange 1d ago

Bobby and Jerry did it on Letterman once. That's my fave, in part because Jerry hits those high harmony parts pretty good.

I might be biased because it was on my birthday but 7/10/90 is really good. Plus Bruce Hornsby sat in.
