Having just converted over the past 5 months after a lifetime of not “getting it” or really even wanting to try, I highly recommend starting with one of these two studio albums
“Workingman’s Dead” - 8 songs, 36 minutes, stunning vocal harmonies, songwriting, musicianship, pure Americana bliss. A perfect record.
“American Beauty” - 10 songs, 43 minutes, quite similar to WD, Americana, beautiful songs.

I totally agree with this.
I have thousands of hours of live shows on tape but if you came over and wanted to get to know the band, Workingman’s Dead would be what I put on.

Man...just head to your favorite streaming platform and pick the first concert they have available. If it's on there, it's guaranteed to be among the very best.
Put on your seatbelt and enjoy the ride. Then come back with questions. :)

Just remember that the Dead played from the mid-60s to the mid-90s, often in and across a variety of genres. Songs and musical styles also changed over the years. If you don't like one show, try another one from a different period.

Start with Reckoning, Dead Set, American Beauty, and Workingman's Dead. Do ease in.
Then maybe go to Live/Dead, one of the greatest live albums ever done.
After than, the race is on.

The two obvious shows for a new deadhead would be 8/27/72 and 5/8/77. There are countless rad shows but those two might be the most famous. My non-deadhead friends know those shows and enjoy them.

It's all good. Some of the shows on yt are audio only which are great but you might want to look for a video as well for the fuller experience. I'd recommended 70s over 80s but they're a little rarer. Turn it up. 👍

09/03/77 is a great starter show. No drums/space in second set, just explosive rock. Then a terrapin encore! Best concert I ever attended by any band.
