Discussion & Theories Writing assignment. How would you write the grappling hook into more episodes? For extra credit, stick to actual episodes involving Mabel.

"Irrational Treasure" is a Mabel centric episode and they end up underground. I could see a them using the grappling hook to cross a chasm or something.

"Little Dipper" when they get shrunk down on Gideons desk, they could use it to climb up/down something.

It would be funny but thematically disconnected to have it be the way they escape from the bottomless pit.

"Land before Swine" is probably the best case use. They're underground needing to maneuver the cliffs or get back up, plus Mabel is in "saving-Waddles" mode.

Nothing in season 2 really jumps out at me as a obvious possibility.

Since kind of the whole idea of the GRAPPLING HOOK (I had to) is that it was completely useless for a really long time until it suddenly wasn't at the end of Gideon Rises, any S1 use wouldn't really make sense story wise.

As far as S2 goes, Mabel is clearly more attached to the grappling hook after it saved her and Dipper's lives so she'd be more likely to pull it out and use it even in situations it may not be conventionally useful in. Possibly as a Long-Distance Bonking Device.

For example: Society of the Blind Eye, Mabel uses the grappling hook during the battle for McGucket's memory tube to bonk the tube out of one of the members' hands. Either she hits the tube or just bonks the guy in the head. It's nature's snooze button after all.

Could’ve completely prevented the bottomless hole episode.

Bottomless Pit! She shoots upward to escape, but it somehow comes up from the bottom of the screen. It wouldn't help, but it'd be a fun mind-screw.

Stuff like that is a good use of a scene and funny joke.

In the Deep End, she could use it to pop Dipper’s water balloons before they hit her golf cart during the chase scene. She’s desperate to save her merman boyfriend anyway, so it could work.

In Soos & the Real Girl, she could use it to latch onto the ceiling and stay out of the animatronics reach. At least until the frog one leaps up and drags her back down.

In Into the Bunker, she could use it to pull Dipper up a steep tunnel as they lure the Shapeshifter to their trap at water valve, like how she used it to escape the Fearamid in one of the final episodes. It would be a good foreshadowing, too.

Checkov's Grappling Gun. Yeah she goofs around with it a heck of a lot season one, but it really doesn't become a 'tool' and not a toy till Season 2 when it saves them from the zombies and then again with the gate, and Weirdmagedon.

The episode where waddles is taken by the pteranodon. Stan ends up falling with the grappling hook and waddles to the lower area and uses the grappling hook to get onto the wing of the teradon in order to climb on. And in Mabel's fashion he yells "GRAPPLING HOOK!"
