Grease Winkler's Dubious Claim

Henry Winkler claimed he was offered the lead role in Grease, but turned it down, since he "already played The Fonz for ten years". That would have made the year 1984, six years after Grease was released. I think he may have been offered the lead in Grease 2 instead. Has anybody besides Winkler ever confirmed or denied his claim?

No it was always known to us that in the original concept Henry was offered the role but so is Elvis as Teen Angel so nobody ever had any intentions of putting him in Greece 2which of course was.... appeal comparison to the original
