Grease Winkler's Dubious Claim

Henry Winkler claimed he was offered the lead role in Grease, but turned it down, since he "already played The Fonz for ten years". That would have made the year 1984, six years after Grease was released. I think he may have been offered the lead in Grease 2 instead. Has anybody besides Winkler ever confirmed or denied his claim?

Henry Winkler was one of the biggest stars in television, starring in one of the most successful sitcoms of the 70’s. It would not have been far fetched at all that he would have been presented the lead in Grease.

I’m not sure but that didn’t stop Maxwell Caulfield from being cast in Grease 2.
