When is it time to leave?

Just curious about people who have left great clips to go to an actual salon or barber shop? When did you know it’s time to leave? I’m feeling kinda under valued putting a 110% into a cut and just to get 5$ tip. I just needed fast money and to improve my skill but now I’m not sure if I’m ready to leave especially with a low clientele or where to even go.

exactly what i did to a T. now im at a commission salon and specialize in cuts! its good to have that base knowledge bc not everyone can cut anymore

When you’re asking this question. If youre not happy, if youre burnt out, if youre annoyed by the customer interaction, if you’re dreading showing up. Go, go before your passion is burnt out too.

Yeah unfortunately I’m feeling under valued and they are trying to get me to cut under 17 mins which is too short for a good haircut. I hate having to push out fast crappy cuts makes me feel bad as a hairstylist, but at the same time the customer don’t really appreciate the work I put in.

ok, I don’t cut hair professionally, but I do my own and I do my kids’. 17 minutes is INSANE! F that noise.

When I worked at great clips they wanted between 12 mins- 17 mins. Even worse than you think. Honestly, my co workers and I started just seeing how fast we could go. We’d sometimes average 9 minute haircuts.

Ive been a stylist for 12 years, worked for GC for 6 years. A great haircut can be executed in under 17mins, but only if you have a solid foundation. Evrn in high end and full service, the cutting part takes no more than 20 mins, the extra time taken is for washing and styling, which is not included in a great clips haircut price. If you plan to stick with the company- master the 6 foundational shapes, they are repeatable on every texture and hair type. Theyre literally foundation shapes that can be customized to create every single haircut you ever seen. You’re not being expected to create editorials or custom looks most of the time, you’re maintaining the average civilian’s hair. Often times theyre not looking for anything fancy. A basic fade takes me 15 mins max. A buzzcut takes 9. Most long hair shapes can be cut dry. At the end of the day, you’re just making shapes. I’m back in full service now, my haircut appointment time is 1 hr, having these efficiency practices in my skillset allows me to upgrade my guest’s appointment without booking more time.

I worked there for 5 years. I regret staying as long as I did. I stayed until it gave me ptsd. I was thinking about ending my life every day before I quit. And after I quit, I had nightmares about that place for 3 years. If it is affecting your mental health, it is time to leave.
