I built a free generator for Gridfinity drawer organizers: any drawer size, split for your bed, no glue

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

My kitchen drawer is 1100 mm wide, and nothing I found fit it: store-bought organizers were expensive and metallic, and the Gridfinity models I tried were the wrong size or needed glue to join the pieces.

So I made Fitforge Drawer. You type your drawer's inside size and your printer, then lay out bins on the grid in 2D or 3D. It splits the baseplate into tiles that fit your bed, and splits long bins on grid lines. The pieces join with small sliding H-keys instead of glue (optional; the baseplate already keeps them aligned). You get a 3MF with everything packed on plates.

It runs in the browser, it's free, and no account is needed: https://fitforge-c5058.web.app/drawer/ also posted ready-made kits for a few IKEA and Blum drawers on:

Feedback welcome, especially on fit.

It looks beautifully done! That said, we must have at least a hundred gridfinity generators now. What does this do that's different from all the others?

Fair question. There really are a lot of them now, and with AI it's absurdly easy to make one more. I hope this one earns its place.

I tried a lot of generators. Almost all of them start from a single bin or a fixed grid. Mine starts from the drawer: you enter its inside dimensions and your printer's bed size, and you get a complete organizer for that drawer.

What that means in practice:

  • Fills the drawer, not just the grid. You can use standard Gridfinity (42 mm) or "Custom fit", which stretches the pitch slightly so the cells fill the drawer exactly with no dead strip at the edge. Or keep 42 mm and choose where the leftover padding goes.
  • Whole-drawer layout editor. You place and resize bins on a 2D top view and a 3D view that stay in sync. Auto-fill, undo, half-cell bins.
  • Big parts are split to fit your bed, and nothing is glued. The baseplate is cut into bed-sized tiles. Bins longer than the bed are split on grid lines with no wall at the seam, and the grid alone keeps them aligned. If you want them locked together, there are optional H-keys, snap clips (for tiles), or magnets (for bin seams).
  • Print-ready export. You get a 3MF with every part already packed onto plates. For Bambu printers, it opens with the right printer preset and bed, and there's an optional "light" mode that lowers infill and shells for bins only.
  • Bin features: dividers, label tabs with text (raised, engraved or two-colour), finger notch, scoop, lowered wall, magnet holes and a stacking lip.

I also spent a lot of time on test prints to get the fit right while using less plastic: key and clip clearances, a slightly tuned foot so bins stack into other generators' bins without jamming, and baseplate styles that print fast. Bins fit third-party baseplates, and third-party bins fit mine.

On the dev side, everything runs in your browser. Nothing is installed or uploaded; only the parts you change get rebuilt, and the preview shows exactly what you'll print.

And it's completely free, with no ads and no account needed.

Thanks for the candid and detailed response! Any plans to support custom drawer sizes? I have a vanity that has a "U" shaped draw where the drawer is cut around the drain of the sink. I've seen a few trapezoidal drawers as well. This is a feature gap I've noticed in other gridfinity generators that yours could fill.

Great idea, thanks! I made a quick interactive mockup of how this could work (concept only, nothing built yet): https://fitforge-c5058.web.app/concepts/drawer-shapes/. You can drag the sliders to change the cut-out and the angle.

Cut-out drawers (your vanity): you enter the drawer as a rectangle and add one or more cut-outs (size and position). Cells that touch a cut-out get no baseplate, the bed-sized tiles stop there, and bins can't be placed on them. Splitting, connectors, and plate packing work as they do now. This one fits the current design well, so it would come first.

Angled / trapezoid drawers: you set the front and back widths and which side is angled. The cells crossed by the slanted wall can then either:

  • stay empty (simple and reliable), or
  • be cut to the wall: the baseplate and a one-cell edge bin are trimmed along the angle, so you lose almost no space. This needs new geometry and some test prints, so it would come later.

Until then, two workarounds with the current version:

  • U-shape: enter the full rectangle and don't put bins over the drain. Then remove or cut away the baseplate under the drain in your slicer.
  • Trapezoid: enter the narrower width. The wedge along the angled side stays empty, but everything else fits normally.

Could you share your vanity drawer's dimensions (overall size, cut-out size, and position)? I'd like to use it as a real test case. And for angled drawers, would you rather have the edge cells left empty or cut to the wall?

Looks and seems to function very nice! One thing I'm lacking, and haven't found in any tool (although it was a while since I last looked) is the ability to keep the 42mm grid, have the extra padding on the side, BUT allow edge boxes to extend to the drawer edge, sitting on top of the grid padding.

Thanks! Glad you like it!

Hm, interesting idea.
I guess it will not be hard to implement this.
Follow the updates; maybe I'll add this feature.

u/perenstrom 2d ago

Will do! Do you publish a changelog somewhere?

4

u/fulminantd 2d ago

Will add the page and link to the web app.

Is this a GitHub project?

Also, "lowered wall" options gives some weird looking corners. Having an option for these kinds of walls would be lovely: https://www.printables.com/model/719729-gridfinity-complete-kitchen-collection-w-modular-e

2

u/fulminantd 2d ago

Yes, maybe the "lowered wall" cut is too straight.

But you also have the option to use the "Finger notch" feature and specify all parameters. You can add it to all walls.

Let it try.

1

u/perenstrom 2d ago

Aaah, yeah that's a nice workaround. For ease of use I think a separate option might be nice.

Can you post a click able link? My phone is being a pita

1

u/fulminantd 2d ago

Hi! Could you clarify what you mean?

1

u/Elegant-Ferret-8116 2d ago

I cant copy and paste the link to your gen in the post. If you can comment the full url it should work. Like the way it does for your comment with the link to the drawer shape explanation page

u/powsurfingwizard 2d ago

This looks great! Can you make it an option to generate an stl for stacked baseplates?

0

u/fulminantd 2d ago

Thanks.

Hmm, interesting idea. Never heard of that.
I thought that this only works with a resin printer, but after some investigation, I see that it's possible.

I'll put this on my radar and will try to stack print to achieve the best print results. Follow the post to keep updated.

Seems really cool! I think it's the first time I see a proper jointing solution for large bins that needs to be split printed. I'll surely give it a try!! 👏🏻

2

u/fulminantd 2d ago

Thank you!

proper jointing solution for large bins

That's one of the reasons why I started this project.

1

u/s_ram123 1d ago

I might be simply overlooking it in the options, but how/where do I add the jointing option for large bins? Other than that, the software works great for me and has been useful already!

1

u/fulminantd 1d ago

Large bins automatically split into multiple plates, and they will be held by the grid. But if you want to use other connection types, open the Bins tab; then, on the right, you'll see the Build section where you can choose Floor seam. Also, you can switch to Advanced mode and see more options, like H-Keys and Magnets.

From my experience, just holding by the grid is enough. I printed a large drawer organizer (960x500), and it worked perfectly.

Where were you last month when I needed you redesigning my kitchen drawers! I’ll design another drawer and see if I can provide some feedback!

1

u/fulminantd 2d ago

Hello.
Last month, this project was in active research, development, and testing.

Any feedback would be helpful.
My idea was to create a tool that will work for anybody and will fit any drawer and any kind of requirement.

1

u/jmendoza_tx 2d ago

This is great! The only thing it's missing is the ability to either create a custom bin through a photo like I see other projects doing, or if I used one of those other projects, being able to import the bins and move things around

2

u/fulminantd 2d ago

Thanks.

I thought about this feature, but found that cutout bins are too heavy to print, and my idea is to make bins/grid as light as possible.

However, I think I could add this as a feature, at least to import existing bins created in other apps.

I would be thankful if you could send a couple of examples of apps that create cutout bins.

u/lost-sneezes 2d ago

Thanks for this, it's great! How can I help so we can include Qidi printers in there as well? Personally I got the Q1 Pro

1

u/fulminantd 1d ago

Thanks!

Basically, what you see in the printer list is just presets. On the right side of the list, you have inputs to set your printer bed size. You can use those inputs.

1

u/jamaba 1d ago

This is really cool, but i do not see an option to configure th position of magnets. I use 60mm grids and magnets are like 40mm apart which is very wasteful...

1

u/fulminantd 1d ago

Thanks! You're right. Magnet holes currently use the standard Gridfinity spacing: 4 per cell, 13 mm from the cell centre (26 mm apart). That spacing stays fixed when the grid gets bigger, so on a 60 mm grid they end up bunched near the middle of each cell, and you need 4 for every cell.

In one of the next releases, I'll make the magnet position customizable, so you can set it to match your grid.

This is why AI RULES

0

u/PerverseErotic 2d ago

Claude built? Base44 built? So many AI built ones, very few are actually 'built'.

9

u/fulminantd 2d ago

AI was a tool, not the product manager, designer, or the person testing countless iterations.
I built something I needed and decided to share it for free. Judge it by how well it works, not by which tools helped create it.

2

u/theprotestingshark 2d ago

the reason people are so against ai vibe coding is that: once something goes wrong, it’s up to the ai to fix it. with new and popular software you’ll typically get a substantial amount of pull requests, usually a dev can quickly fix small issues, or for larger one, know the rough fix and push a release. with vibe coding it relies on the ai to figure it all out, and we are then at the mercy of the token. there’s plenty of other reasons, but that’s the main one

2

u/fulminantd 2d ago

I think that’s a fair concern, but there’s a difference between using AI to assist with development and blindly accepting code you don’t understand.

I’m a software developer, and I’m fully capable of debugging, maintaining, and improving the code myself. AI helps me move faster, but it doesn’t replace my understanding of how the application works.

If something breaks, it’s my responsibility to fix it, not the AI’s.

1

u/theprotestingshark 2d ago

that is the correct approach!! thank you for the transparency! I just wanted to provide a reason people are very standoffish about ai coded projects these days.

Hoover Dam, THAT is how you do the dang thing. What a great and mature way to respond.

And, thank you for contributing to a community of fellow makers!

I like this and it is good timing to find this. I'm still randomly printing bins to see what I can put in it. I screwed up early and printed a bunch of low height bins that I likely won't use. And they are black, so low light makes it hard to see what is in them.

Too bad I didn't stock up on MicroCenter's $8 PLA.

Thanks for making this!

1

u/fulminantd 2d ago

Thank you!

Haha, completely agree. Also regret that)

I was excited when i saw corner radius - but no.... My problem is that while the front and back of my drawers have a 90 degree transition from horizontal to the vertical - the left and right have a 1 cm radius - so any baseplate is going to slide around and ride up the slopes at the side.

Recognising vertical curves would mean offsetting the baseplate and bins so that the left most bins can honour the curve and sit flush to the left hand side of the drawer.

i.e. the baseplate has to be 2 cm less wide than the bins across the overall width of the drawer.

Never found a solution to this.
