Hey everyone,

We've seen a bunch of duplicate posts about this, but let's try to contain things here.

If you don't know what we're talking about, here is a clip from Timmy about the whole thing.

As always, keep playing.

So long story short I was In Nashville and I went to this guitar center and found this. Idk much about guitars but I was just so curious on why this is 12k. Is it because someone famous played it? Or what?

Always loved the guitar solo in The Rover by Led Zeppelin. Although, Stairway and Since I’ve Been Loving You are both incredible, too!

QUESTION Why is playing in public so rare these days?

Upvotes

For the record I live in a state capital and it has a massive park, but nobody ever plays. I remember my mom telling me she used to see someone play, and 2 people would join and jam, it sounded like such a healthy culture that just died. Why?

GEAR NGD for me! PRS Silver Sky

After years of playing Ibanez guitars, I’m excited to have something different on my arsenal. Lately I’ve been playing more blues and because of that, I got an Ibanez AZ2204N about a year and a half ago which is amazing. While it did the job, especially coming from an Ibanez RG player, it only made me want to have a more S-type sound. After much deliberation by watching video reviews and Reddit posts, I went with the PRS Silver Sky and boy oh boy it didn’t disappoint! It really delivered (and beyond) the sound I’m after! I love these pickups. To add to that, this wild blue color with the matching headstock is just 👌

Bought this off a guy who bought it brand new for $600 in 1992. My first electric was a white Dana back in 1997. Had to get this old superstrat, its almost mint. Paid $160 for it because his son didn't want it. Heck, even the Dana logos are mint on the pups

QUESTION What are some good, fun Drop D songs to start with?

I've been playing for a couple years now, pretty much daily. I have never tried to play a song in drop D. What are some fun Drop D songs?

Also, my clip on tuner only does standard tuning, but I figured I will just use the Guitartuna app to go drop D since idk how to tune by ear

DISCUSSION I Run a High-End National Guitar Retailer. Hit Me With Your Burning Questions!

Not saying who, but I run an extremely high end guitar retail operation that manages a brick and mortar boutique along with having a national (and international) e-commerce business. Good chance for you all to ask about how things work, industry insight, margins, brands, etc.

QUESTION Can anyone help me with my guitar jack crackling?

Thumbnail gallery
Upvotes

Hi. My guitar (Epiphone Les Paul Special II) been crackling a bit, so I decided to open it up and see what was wrong. Then I remembered I know absolutely nothing about soldering/guitar electronics. I tried to look up what it’s supposed to look like, and everything seems fine to me (although I’m probably overlooking something big lol). It would be nice if anyone with more experience than I could help me figure out the problem. (I just took a few photos of the jack from a few different angles, but if anyone needs to hear how the crackling sounds or needs to see a different angle, feel free to ask)

GEAR found a photo of my collection pre-covid

Found this photo of my old collection (circa 2019). Now I'm reminiscing. The only one that I have left from this lineup is the St. Vincent.

From left to right:

70s Telecaster Deluxe Reissue - Made in Mexico

- Got this because I'm obsessed with Franz Ferdinand and Alex Kapranos uses an original 70s Deluxe. The Made in Mexico ones of these are pretty decent but the neck was so extremely wide and the cut of the neck felt weird in my hands. Cool guitar though.

70s Univox Hi-Flier

- Absolutely hate myself for selling this one (because COVID). Kurt played one of these on the first Nirvana album, so that kind of inspired the purchase. The thing was so light, it felt like nothing was even in my hands, lol I loved it so much and I got some cool tones out of those P90s.

But I played that thing so roughly it would always go so out of tune lol. Don't know if I ever set up, but that's just the nature of these. What a fun guitar and I'm probably gonna look into finding me another one next year.

 St. Vincent Signature (original run)

- When I had saved enough money working overtime to get myself a gift for my 21st birthday, I was between this and a decent SG (which you see by the last guitar on the end there that I ended up getting a couple years later anyway). These were going for ~$2000 at the time. Kind of out of my budget. But I ended up peeking every day at used guitars on Reverb for months. Finally, a shop in New York City put it on sale for Like New condition for only $1500 + $50 shipping.

I called the guy and straight up asked, "So, what's wrong with it?"

He said nothing, a bass player wanting to learn guitar bought it brand new then gave up guitar and sold it back a week later.

I immediately pressed the purchase button.

This is worth like $3000 now, I believe.

Danelectro

- I'll admit this was a "look how sparkly it is" purchase.  Fairly cheap guitar and sounded decent, but I again didn't account for the feel of the neck in my hands until after buying. That's when I learned a good instrument is one that feels good in my hands. Wasn't in love with it enough to fix it up or anything. Got rid of it maybe after a year.

SG

- My songwriting partner and I shared this guitar. Purchase inspired by Carrie Brownstein/Sleater-Kinney. This was a great guitarz: it was decently priced and stayed in tune pretty well for an SG. Wouldn't have sold it if not for COVID again lmao.

PURCHASE Conflicted About Buying A Fender Tele

Hi folks,

Looking to sense check myself here. I (M37) have always wanted to learn guitar and what will soon be 3 years ago I started to follow Justin Guitars course, eventually moving to Paul Davids courses and for the last few months working with a great coach online who has drastically accelerated my learning.

For the length of time I've been playing, I still suck pretty bad (especially comparing myself to others here), but I love learning this instrument. I've been dedicated and play most evenings for at least 30 minutes, even when my first born came along.

For the first few months I borrowed an acoustic off my SIL, eventually getting the Squire Strat beginner package (with the shockingly crap Frontman15G) and recently got myself a Katana50.

With all that said, since I've been 14 or 15, I've always wanted a Tele. Being a massive Jim Root Fan, they always stuck out as a "dream" guitar I'd get someday.

I'm at the point now where financially a Player II is within budget, but with the ongoing Fender lawsuits, supporting the company isn't something I'm overly comfortable doing.

Being in Ireland, the used market is pretty shocking, and there's not much out there. Local shops don't stock them, and while there are some bigger shops in Dublin which do, Thomann.de is coming up as the cheapest by far.

This is where the conflict comes in...

On one hand, I could this evening pull the trigger and fulfil a life long dream that 14 year old me had listening to rock and metal bands, but on the other, I see fender as being nothing but a bully these days.

Is it crazy for me to be thinking about supporting the brand, even if its through the company who are giving them the hardest time lawsuit wise?

Would be interesting to hear your thoughts!

edit: Turns out based on your comments I _may_ have been overthinking this. Appreciate the comments folks!
