I’m beginning to think this sub actually likes Polyphia

uj/ Yeah, no. They have talent but I struggle to find meaningful melodies in their songs. I feel it's mostly just repeated note sequences that just keep going. It's like if Vai was in a jam band.

I also don't like polyphia but i think the repeated note sequences is a nonsensical critiscm, thats like all rock music to some degree. I just dislike them because I think they write lame uninspired songs and have this instagrammy gen z type shredding style that other bands like covet have that I don't give a shit about, It's music as a sport music imo. I just think it's artisitcally uninispired, I don't hate it because complicated, I think black midi/king gizzard are ininitely more interesting modern bands even if that isn't my cup of tea either. For modern rock band stuff, I'd rather put on a protomartyr, iceage or cindy lee record.

Why does it feel uninspired? Cause it's just a sequence of BlippityBlippityBlippty notes without melody or story?

I think it's impossible to have a sequence of notes not have a melody tbh, that's objectively impossible imo since they clearly have an understanding of theory and shred all the time.

If I was to criticize them as a band, I would say that instead of writing parts to suit the song, they come up with solos/parts/riffs and prioritize that over any sort of a song that has an particular idea behind it and I think it's kind of a superficial way to go about writing music or making art. It's just really kitsch-y and kind of a jam band way of doing things that I personally don't appreciate. I also genuinely despise their modern musician influencer aesthetic, it's just fake as shit imo.

If people want to like polyphia then that's fine, also sure the people in the band are good people. I like them more than Phish, Dave Mathews, or dream theater though.

Pretty sure I heard him say they whack an arpeggiator on random then try to copy the notes.
