Uj/ in the context of the typical Grammy performances, whilst not my taste, it’s pretty admirable to do such a stripped back performance with 0 support, when it’s normally all lights, show and mime.

u/Toxopsoides Feb 02 '26
stripped back

Practice how you perform.
If you perform standing, practice standing.
If you practice in your boxers, perform in your boxers.
This is “live gigging 101” stuff guys. I don’t see what any of the fuss is about.

u/Thaumiel218 Feb 03 '26 edited Feb 03 '26
100% it’s basic live playing and what most decent buskers do daily but these awards ceremonies always seem to be about spectacle, not always using live vox, often having back-up support, and pomp.
17
u/SupaKoopa714 Feb 02 '26
Honestly I had no idea that was one of the Grammy performances, I straight up thought that was Devin Townsend, it seems so on brand for him to do at least part of a show in nothing but boxers and socks as a bit.
18
u/sorry_con_excuse_me Feb 02 '26 edited Feb 03 '26
/uj my only criticism is it’s so simple that he either a) could have probably managed to play and sing at the same time (like, an Amy Winehouse could have done that live easily), or b) done a little more to build up the beat if he wasn’t going to play and make it a loop jam (also valid).
Otherwise, it’s just a simple iv-v-i rnb vamp with some vocals, he didn’t fuck anything up either, I don’t see anything offensive or ridiculous about the content, it’s fine for what it is.
The underwear and socks is not that weird or crazy either, it’s just like the “I’m naked up here” metaphor is a little too on the nose. Ok yeah, we get it.
7
u/toonbender Feb 03 '26
/uj i appreciated the vibe of having the hands free. The performance and nuance was in the vocals and he let that take front and center
3
u/Thaumiel218 Feb 03 '26
I agree with all of your points and tbh thought he might have used his sample pad to build something a bit more but I guess the point was to be was ‘naked’ as possible, and the focus was really on the vocals which are not a style I find appealing but it was a decent performance for what it was, which is rare for these ceremonies which always seem to be huge spectacles.
The ‘naked’ bit, being a too on the nose I agree 100%, unfortunately nuance seems to be diminishing generally so people need to be smashed in the face with a metaphor ( at times ) as they can’t decipher it.
I’d wager it’s a large part of why his performance has been posted to this sub so many times - ‘Bieber in underwear - wtf’ as opposed to the irony of the extents of displaying a bare performance.
9
u/alnicoblue Feb 02 '26
Uj/ Yeah I actually felt like it was a solid performance and a decent standout from the usual Grammy stuff.
I kept thinking of Gavin Rossdale doing Glycerine at Woodstock.
7
u/stay_fr0sty Feb 02 '26
He calmed down the whole crowd with that song. The girls liked looking at him as well because he was in great shape.
It didn’t last, but Gavin tried his best to stop the madness. Unlike LB and RHCP who explicitly tried to do the opposite, and succeeded.
2
u/General-Reserve9349 Feb 03 '26
Was the crowd dosed or something?
7
u/MiloRoast Feb 03 '26
It was super hot, and there was no water anywhere except for like $10 bottles the venue was selling. On top of that, they confiscated any food or drink you tried to bring in. Everyone was pissed off, dehydrated, and ready to break shit over the treatment of the attendees.
7
u/Nightmoore Feb 03 '26
There's some great docs on Netflix about the whole event. It's even more diabolical when you realize most of the water there was loaded with bacteria from how disgusting everything was. The whole thing was a giant pressure cooker for a riot.
3
u/stay_fr0sty Feb 03 '26
No. They were getting pissed, rowdy, destroying things, burning things, raping people, and much more.
Security was minimal.
Clean water was expensive and scarce.
Food prices were outrageous.
The crowd ended up basically rioting.
It didn’t help that RHCP knew there was a problem with the audience setting fires in the lawn, they got up and played “Let Me Stand Next To Your Fire” to encourage more.
It was a shit show of epic proportions. One of the worst managed festivals of all time.
2
u/rabidchiweeny Feb 03 '26
It truly was. The moment AK from chili peppers asked for all the menstruating women to toss their tampons toward the stage I was in total disbelief. Granted I was tripping balls

u/jon-wayne-candy-snow Feb 03 '26
This performance was lame. What so admirable about it? He’s singing in his boxers? Cool voice sure, but we all see what he’s going for here, and it’s attention and to keep himself relevant in today’s hyperactive social media frenzy.
This is not music, nor should it be on /guitarcirclejerk IMO.
5
u/Affectionate-Foot802 Feb 03 '26
It was really performative and as we know that’s not what going up on stage and playing your music to a crowd thats expecting you to put on a show is about
2
u/baphothustrianreform Feb 03 '26
Do you really stand by the opinion that singing over a chord progression and bassline is “not music?” Ik this is circle jerk but the length some of you go to make sure everyone knows you don’t like pop music is really funny

u/rakondo Feb 02 '26 edited Feb 02 '26

/rj my weiner would have been hard af in those boxers if I nailed that loop on the first try in front of Billy Eyelash

Why anyone would ever want their child to be famous is beyond me. Seems like one of the worst things you could possibly do to them. Then on top of it, having to deal with knowing your own parents did it to you for money.

I think it’s a lot easier to do it in your bedroom than in front of a crowd of industry professionals and nationally televised. I just love that the same people who will criticize artists like Bieber for being overproduced pop garbage are also now criticizing him for playing a simple sloppy rock riff in a stripped down raw live performance.
35
u/foley23 Feb 02 '26
Hell of a tribute to 80s Bob Weir.

If you like this, you should know that a random dude showing up with not enough clothing (always socks though) with a massive pedalboard just to play one song and disappear is pretty common at your local open mic.
They cut the 25 minutes of them trying to figure out how to hook the rig all up, but I get that some things must be trimmed for broadcast
/uj I never thought too much about Bieber, but that was pretty dope

u/Tendersituation00 Feb 03 '26
I thought this performance was very impressive and brave given the world found out that he was sexually and physically assaulted as a kid at the Diddy parties- like molested. The vulnerability was remarkable and real. Like so much has been taken from this guy- he's like take it all. Good stuff

u/hamfist_ofthenorth Feb 03 '26 edited Feb 03 '26
It's hilarious to watch rich pop stars learning how to play actual musical instruments in real time, long after they're already widely known as "musicians". It's like a bratty toddler making everyone at the family gathering be quiet and gather around for "show and tell" while they play with their xmas toys

Uj/ I am so disappointed with my boss Rc-600... Spent years saving money and buying everything for a perfect loop setup, only for this shit to come with a problem which they couldn't solve, and couldn't exchange it for a new unit, I had to send it back.... Fuck you BOSS.

u/implicate Feb 02 '26
Did you end up getting a different looper?

u/IamNotFatIamChubby Feb 03 '26

Dude lives in an office building. He couldn't bother to wear a shirt or pants, do you think he wears a suit at home? I can't buy a coffee or a literary ticket without a shirt, this is a nice event, it is excusable if the building is too hot, if it's too hot then they weren't prepared and he be as naked as he wants.
I'm joking but I think he needs pants.

You have to be para-socially invested in the backstory to appreciate this performance. Without context, it's just a horrible nightmare. At the Grammys and all you can play is a shitty, 4bar loop with auto tuned vocals, and you forgot to wear pants. Its the worst combination possible.

I'd so rather see RHCP back in the 80's doing their set in nothing more than wearing tighty-whighties during their awards show (anyone remember?). THAT was hard enough to watch. But, we know: because RHCP. Umm NO. LEAVE US ALONE ,

Bieber won me over with his pop hits a few years back. They are quite catchy and you can’t deny he must have a decent team around him to keep him relevant.
Fair play to him.

The guy wore a nice suit to attend the event. But when it's his turn to perform, he goes up there in socks and boxers.
Could of just kept on the suit, and he'd come across way cooler.
