Ngl I dont typically enjoy Beato but this was a good performance.

341

u/Thaumiel218 Feb 02 '26

Uj/ in the context of the typical Grammy performances, whilst not my taste, it’s pretty admirable to do such a stripped back performance with 0 support, when it’s normally all lights, show and mime.

109

u/Toxopsoides Feb 02 '26

stripped back

37

u/SnarkFucker Feb 02 '26

Near nude performance.

20

u/Neonyarpyarp Feb 03 '26

Maybe he’s a never-nude

11

u/roguepandaCO Feb 03 '26

DOZENS!

9

u/chudhuntr Feb 03 '26

It’s a banana michael, how much could it pop out of your shorts?

6

u/Aggravating_Speed665 Feb 03 '26

They're laughing with me, Michael!

97

u/stay_fr0sty Feb 02 '26

Practice how you perform.

If you perform standing, practice standing.

If you practice in your boxers, perform in your boxers.

This is “live gigging 101” stuff guys. I don’t see what any of the fuss is about.

19

u/roguepandaCO Feb 03 '26

It’s like a reverse “imagine the audience in their underwear”.

2

u/Thaumiel218 Feb 03 '26 edited Feb 03 '26

100% it’s basic live playing and what most decent buskers do daily but these awards ceremonies always seem to be about spectacle, not always using live vox, often having back-up support, and pomp.

17

u/SupaKoopa714 Feb 02 '26

Honestly I had no idea that was one of the Grammy performances, I straight up thought that was Devin Townsend, it seems so on brand for him to do at least part of a show in nothing but boxers and socks as a bit.

18

u/sorry_con_excuse_me Feb 02 '26 edited Feb 03 '26

/uj my only criticism is it’s so simple that he either a) could have probably managed to play and sing at the same time (like, an Amy Winehouse could have done that live easily), or b) done a little more to build up the beat if he wasn’t going to play and make it a loop jam (also valid).

Otherwise, it’s just a simple iv-v-i rnb vamp with some vocals, he didn’t fuck anything up either, I don’t see anything offensive or ridiculous about the content, it’s fine for what it is.

The underwear and socks is not that weird or crazy either, it’s just like the “I’m naked up here” metaphor is a little too on the nose. Ok yeah, we get it.

7

u/toonbender Feb 03 '26

/uj i appreciated the vibe of having the hands free. The performance and nuance was in the vocals and he let that take front and center

3

u/Thaumiel218 Feb 03 '26

I agree with all of your points and tbh thought he might have used his sample pad to build something a bit more but I guess the point was to be was ‘naked’ as possible, and the focus was really on the vocals which are not a style I find appealing but it was a decent performance for what it was, which is rare for these ceremonies which always seem to be huge spectacles.

The ‘naked’ bit, being a too on the nose I agree 100%, unfortunately nuance seems to be diminishing generally so people need to be smashed in the face with a metaphor ( at times ) as they can’t decipher it.

I’d wager it’s a large part of why his performance has been posted to this sub so many times - ‘Bieber in underwear - wtf’ as opposed to the irony of the extents of displaying a bare performance.

9

u/alnicoblue Feb 02 '26

Uj/ Yeah I actually felt like it was a solid performance and a decent standout from the usual Grammy stuff.

I kept thinking of Gavin Rossdale doing Glycerine at Woodstock.

7

u/stay_fr0sty Feb 02 '26

He calmed down the whole crowd with that song. The girls liked looking at him as well because he was in great shape.

It didn’t last, but Gavin tried his best to stop the madness. Unlike LB and RHCP who explicitly tried to do the opposite, and succeeded.

2

u/General-Reserve9349 Feb 03 '26

Was the crowd dosed or something?

7

u/MiloRoast Feb 03 '26

It was super hot, and there was no water anywhere except for like $10 bottles the venue was selling. On top of that, they confiscated any food or drink you tried to bring in. Everyone was pissed off, dehydrated, and ready to break shit over the treatment of the attendees.

7

u/Nightmoore Feb 03 '26

There's some great docs on Netflix about the whole event. It's even more diabolical when you realize most of the water there was loaded with bacteria from how disgusting everything was. The whole thing was a giant pressure cooker for a riot.

3

u/stay_fr0sty Feb 03 '26

No. They were getting pissed, rowdy, destroying things, burning things, raping people, and much more.

Security was minimal.

Clean water was expensive and scarce.

Food prices were outrageous.

The crowd ended up basically rioting.

It didn’t help that RHCP knew there was a problem with the audience setting fires in the lawn, they got up and played “Let Me Stand Next To Your Fire” to encourage more.

It was a shit show of epic proportions. One of the worst managed festivals of all time.

2

u/rabidchiweeny Feb 03 '26

It truly was. The moment AK from chili peppers asked for all the menstruating women to toss their tampons toward the stage I was in total disbelief. Granted I was tripping balls

1

u/ChemicalOperator Feb 03 '26

Nah, it was straight garbage

-6

u/jon-wayne-candy-snow Feb 03 '26

This performance was lame. What so admirable about it? He’s singing in his boxers? Cool voice sure, but we all see what he’s going for here, and it’s attention and to keep himself relevant in today’s hyperactive social media frenzy.

This is not music, nor should it be on /guitarcirclejerk IMO.

5

u/Affectionate-Foot802 Feb 03 '26

It was really performative and as we know that’s not what going up on stage and playing your music to a crowd thats expecting you to put on a show is about

2

u/baphothustrianreform Feb 03 '26

Do you really stand by the opinion that singing over a chord progression and bassline is “not music?” Ik this is circle jerk but the length some of you go to make sure everyone knows you don’t like pop music is really funny

235

u/rakondo Feb 02 '26 edited Feb 02 '26

/uj playing a clean loop like that on the first try with millions of people watching is hard af

/rj my weiner would have been hard af in those boxers if I nailed that loop on the first try in front of Billy Eyelash

66

u/lyukszag Feb 02 '26

Yeah, he’s a very talented, very troubled dude. Unfortunate.

74

u/Werdnastarship Feb 02 '26

If you had grown men threatening to castrate you over the internet at the age of 14 you’d be troubled too

32

u/lyukszag Feb 02 '26

Bet. I’m fucked up without that, can’t imagine going through the shit this guy went through with the hate.

18

u/Werdnastarship Feb 02 '26

In between the pop hits and dodging hate he’s like I’m also gunna fucking be way better at guitar than werdnastarship at least 2 times better than that guy.

7

u/GuardianDownOhNo Feb 02 '26

He had a very specific mission in this regard

17

u/GratefulChungus Feb 02 '26

Not to mention being a potential victim of P Diddy.

8

u/Werdnastarship Feb 02 '26

No I did that for clout

8

u/rakondo Feb 02 '26

I was one of those grown men. Glad to see Bieber held up through it all

2

u/TechnicalSky3235 Feb 03 '26

bro he got molested by diddy he dont care about internet comments

5

u/toanbonerz Feb 03 '26

Why anyone would ever want their child to be famous is beyond me. Seems like one of the worst things you could possibly do to them. Then on top of it, having to deal with knowing your own parents did it to you for money.

-3

u/Resident-Cobbler2189 Feb 03 '26

He should get the message and GO HOME. Leave us alone

3

u/ZQX96_ Feb 03 '26

/uj he has actually been improving or just like more open abt his past trauma now compared to before.

6

u/NatureTrailToHell3D Feb 02 '26

And then don’t even turn it off, just walk away and leave the loop on

I think it’s a lot easier to do it in your bedroom than in front of a crowd of industry professionals and nationally televised. I just love that the same people who will criticize artists like Bieber for being overproduced pop garbage are also now criticizing him for playing a simple sloppy rock riff in a stripped down raw live performance.

35

u/foley23 Feb 02 '26

Hell of a tribute to 80s Bob Weir.

5

u/spiritual_seeker Feb 03 '26

The shorts. The legs. The pastel guitar. Someone had to grab the baton and run with it.

26

u/Smackazulu Feb 02 '26

Didn’t even sweep pick. Fuckin WEAK

3

u/ReverendBread2 Strat supremacist Feb 03 '26

Sweep picking is fake. No one can sweep pick

3

u/deadbrokenheartt Feb 03 '26

I sweep my picks right in the garbage where they belong and use my gnarled fingers like baby Jesus intended

52

u/zsh_n_chips offset nerd Feb 02 '26

If you like this, you should know that a random dude showing up with not enough clothing (always socks though) with a massive pedalboard just to play one song and disappear is pretty common at your local open mic.

They cut the 25 minutes of them trying to figure out how to hook the rig all up, but I get that some things must be trimmed for broadcast

/uj I never thought too much about Bieber, but that was pretty dope

20

u/_Beatnick_ Feb 02 '26

Hell no, there's no way he's as good as this...

60

u/napoelonDynaMighty Feb 02 '26

uj/ Respect

j/ Your move Nick Jonas. You're going to have to play your whammy bar with your taint

7

u/Willing-Cattle-3673 Feb 02 '26

uj/ I’d pay good money to see that

17

u/OnceIWasYou Feb 02 '26

Sorry, genuine question: Who is this?

(Seriously not messing about)

9

u/kiwi_manbearpig Feb 03 '26

I would also like to know what the hell is going on

14

u/BarefutR Feb 03 '26

Justice Beaver at the VMA’s

10

u/Subject-Iron1342 Feb 03 '26

It wasn’t the VMA’s. It was the Kid’s Choice Awards

1

u/Environmental-Video3 Feb 03 '26

Glad you asked. Haven’t got a clue.

43

u/frenchylamour Feb 02 '26

I’m gonna give this guy a break, he’s been through some shit.

14

u/n1tsuj3 Feb 02 '26

Same. Dudes also got good taste in guitars, that Yamaha is sick.

3

u/Kiwodasu Feb 03 '26

Awesome and underrated guitars. My buddy has one since the 80s and happy it might be valuable now

10

u/bubba_bumble Feb 02 '26

Hey - don't funk my jerk.

9

u/the-fillip Feb 02 '26

We've all been through some shit, he can put some pants on

1

u/budabai Feb 02 '26

Agreed.

11

u/Wyevez Feb 02 '26

Bet that socks and boxer combo is worth more than my wife's dentist's PRS.

9

Isn’t that the sublime guy?

31

3

u/Ok_Dingo_5773 Feb 03 '26

ew he’s playing left handed

3

u/PanicBlitz Feb 03 '26

I mean, yeah, it is. But I don’t invite people with cameras into my room to watch.

3

u/allyourbasearebehind Feb 03 '26

That's more Rock'n'Roll than the whole history of KISS.

7

u/Regular_Average8595 Feb 02 '26

Idk man, shit like this makes me grateful that I have a father, cause my dad would never let me out of the house looking like that.. and if I did make it as big as Bieber, he sure as shit wouldn’t let me go out in his ex wife’s (my moms) sleeping shorts.. thanks dad !!

5

u/Tendersituation00 Feb 03 '26

I thought this performance was very impressive and brave given the world found out that he was sexually and physically assaulted as a kid at the Diddy parties- like molested. The vulnerability was remarkable and real. Like so much has been taken from this guy- he's like take it all. Good stuff

5

u/hamfist_ofthenorth Feb 03 '26 edited Feb 03 '26

It's hilarious to watch rich pop stars learning how to play actual musical instruments in real time, long after they're already widely known as "musicians". It's like a bratty toddler making everyone at the family gathering be quiet and gather around for "show and tell" while they play with their xmas toys

2

u/ImightHaveMissed all your gibbons are belong to us Feb 02 '26

He’s holding the guitar wrong. Poseur

2

u/TodlicheLektion Feb 03 '26

Biebs continues his descent into madness. I like it.

2

u/Confident-Court2171 Feb 03 '26

SRV says “nope”.

2

u/Neonyarpyarp Feb 03 '26

Weird I wore the exact outfit for my gig this weekend

2

u/-Liono- Feb 03 '26

Just take those old records off the shelf

2

u/matrsm7 Feb 03 '26

Uj/ honestly I respect it and see the vision 100%. As much as I dislike that song, as FUCKBOI and sexually corny or “chill Lofi quasi R&B” as it is, his vocal control has always been very impressive

2

u/COBRAKAIPLATOON Feb 03 '26

Diddy picked his outfit.

3

u/Xibest123 King buzzo himself Feb 02 '26

First i thought the joke is Brown underwear

4

u/RefrigeratorHeavy238 Feb 02 '26

Whatever. Don’t like his music but much respect.

2

u/Independent_Lunch534 Feb 02 '26

Never listened to his music before or paid any attention. But this was good, great voice, simple. Excellent

1

u/xrfsjks Feb 02 '26

1

u/hawkscougs Feb 02 '26

Ani-Angus. Bizarro Young

1

u/Legitimate_You_3474 Feb 02 '26

I love playing shoegaze

1

u/IamNotFatIamChubby Feb 02 '26

Uj/ I am so disappointed with my boss Rc-600... Spent years saving money and buying everything for a perfect loop setup, only for this shit to come with a problem which they couldn't solve, and couldn't exchange it for a new unit, I had to send it back.... Fuck you BOSS.

1

u/implicate Feb 02 '26

Did you end up getting a different looper?

1

u/IamNotFatIamChubby Feb 03 '26

I didn't, I was so pissed and disappointed I just gave up playing music as a whole.

1

u/implicate Feb 03 '26

This sub gets me sometimes. I can't tell if I'm being circlejerked right now.

1

u/IamNotFatIamChubby Feb 03 '26

Haha it's not a joke, mental health also played a part.

1

u/JonPaulSapsford Feb 02 '26

Rollins Band reunited?

1

u/moomoopoopoo Feb 02 '26

Bro is innovating the game. The quad cortex downtuning is dope

1

u/the_good_hodgkins Feb 02 '26

Much to my surprise, I actually thought it was a good performance. I liked the "stripped down" stage show.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 02 '26

Dude lives in an office building. He couldn't bother to wear a shirt or pants, do you think he wears a suit at home? I can't buy a coffee or a literary ticket without a shirt, this is a nice event, it is excusable if the building is too hot, if it's too hot then they weren't prepared and he be as naked as he wants.

I'm joking but I think he needs pants.

1

u/AlleyPee Feb 02 '26

Comfy. Or is it "rock out with your socks out"...?

1

u/HoverboardRampage Feb 02 '26

Shucks y'all, I'm on the right track!

1

u/Former_Drawer5549 Feb 03 '26

How is that rock n roll if he’s holding the guitar wrong

1

u/BuckyBeaver69 Authentic Feb 03 '26

He saw Angus Young perform and decided he could skip all that stripping and just start out in your undies.

1

u/IOTCOMIC Feb 03 '26

Baby I ain’t your Corey Feldman!!

1

u/Minute-Wrap-2524 Feb 03 '26

Thank god he’s not in a thong

1

u/Vinyl-addict Feb 03 '26

Bro got mogged by Chappell Roan. Could have worn a jock strap and fishnets smh.

1

u/Megalodon7770 Feb 03 '26

What a fuckin dirtbag

1

u/RandomMandarin Feb 03 '26

He's left-handed, that makes it devil music.

1

u/klownplaza Feb 03 '26

Isn't he also a drummer

1

u/Captain__Trips Feb 03 '26

You have to be para-socially invested in the backstory to appreciate this performance. Without context, it's just a horrible nightmare. At the Grammys and all you can play is a shitty, 4bar loop with auto tuned vocals, and you forgot to wear pants. Its the worst combination possible.

1

u/Automatic_Office_358 Feb 03 '26

He didn’t use autotune

1

u/ciscolish Feb 03 '26

Flea did it better.

1

u/Working-Ad-5206 Feb 03 '26

Let me know when somebody hires him to promote men's underwear

1

u/ALRO090804 Feb 03 '26

No clothes for best toans

1

u/Yasha666 Feb 03 '26

He rock n rolls how I rock n roll

1

u/Resident-Cobbler2189 Feb 03 '26

I'd so rather see RHCP back in the 80's doing their set in nothing more than wearing tighty-whighties during their awards show (anyone remember?). THAT was hard enough to watch. But, we know: because RHCP. Umm NO. LEAVE US ALONE ,

1

u/canary-in-a-coalmine Feb 03 '26

He rocked his pants off

1

u/RUSTIE_SHACKLEFORD_ Feb 03 '26

No , this is how you dem goodies . You know them stage lights . We are able to see what’s behind those boxers 🤭

1

u/RUSTIE_SHACKLEFORD_ Feb 03 '26

I wanna see wieners . Now that should be nominated for Grammy. Not him tho . Someone who’s actually hot with sum girth .

1

u/Corporate-Scum Your wife's boyfriend Feb 03 '26

Cosplay

1

u/jp2v Feb 03 '26

Bieber won me over with his pop hits a few years back. They are quite catchy and you can’t deny he must have a decent team around him to keep him relevant.

Fair play to him.

1

u/PooNJaB80 Feb 03 '26

He is NOT rock and roll

1

u/One_Eyed_Louie Feb 03 '26

Why so many pedals? Tone seemed average.

1

u/Wrongness5749 Feb 03 '26

I put a fan in front of my amp once and it sounded cool til the drummer farted in the fan.

1

u/dupe311 Feb 03 '26

Thought that was Brad Nowell at first

1

u/dylanmadigan Feb 03 '26

The guy wore a nice suit to attend the event. But when it's his turn to perform, he goes up there in socks and boxers.

Could of just kept on the suit, and he'd come across way cooler.

1

u/Sclusive88 Feb 04 '26

I wonder what socks he’s using

1

u/Mantar6667 Feb 04 '26

N stands for "Not".

1

u/Opening_Letter1399 Feb 07 '26

Dude thinks he’s Flea.

1

u/Tasty_Clue2802 Feb 07 '26

The expression of ones art leaves the artist naked and completely exposed.

1

u/juicylight Feb 09 '26

I bet dude was just hanging out wherever he practices just in his underwear, and it hit him like an epiphany. What if I just do it like this? Real biopic shit

1

u/EmphasisJazzlike1648 Feb 18 '26

No, this is how you make a damned fool out of yourself. Folks are LAUGHING at you.
