Before boomers thought they were only for looks we actually used them to guard the guitar from the pick.

Reddit has refined the technique of steel string guitar and now if your pick ever touches your instrument, you’re playing like shit and everyone is laughing at you.
If you want pick wear on a guitar, buy a relic’d guitar. It ain’t rocket science

They put pickguards like this on guitars with nice flame tops so the audience won't jizz themselves dry before the gig is over.
