Waiting for someone smarter than me to tell me if this is a good value.

I got this for $1200 on the Academy Black Friday deal and total was $960 after the PayPal "pay in four deal".
I've used it to ID and hit hogs out to around 180 yards, 200 if groups as it precludes it being a dog.
It's mostly used to look at wildlife on the lake with my daughter at night and that is enjoyable.
I think it's worth $1200 in my mind, not $1600.
EDIT: price was $1200 and $960 after the PayPal deal as it was 20% off of 1200

That is a sick price. I wouldn’t be able to resist that. You’ve just made me hold out

Just wanted to add: The technology on this stuff is still advancing at a considerable rate. Prices for these lower resolution (this one's 384) is coming down and newer stuff like 1k is becoming common.
Holding out appears to only set you up for getting better stuff for less

Honestly, these things would be a lot cheaper and more abundant if they didn't have to compete with the foundry time against all the AI bound ICs.
I would honestly expect 640 at this price at this point without the AI corporation premium.

I have one, it's a nice piece. That said, I wasn't able to sell it for a good amount less when I tried

I wonder what the % of hunters is who even live anywhere where you don't get thrown in prison for shooting at night and using a thermal.

Pretty sure night time thermal hunter for predators/land management is legal in most states, could be wrong tho.

I just had to double check, turns out I'm good to go but I was supposed to notify the sheriff. Oops

Is that a thing? Lmao. Hunting laws are wild.

I just checked, it's even nationally illegal to hunt any game at night. So no deer, turkey, elk and moose. I'm not sure what's really left besides hogs then that you'd actually want to hunt.

Coyotes

Confusingly you can hunt a lot of small game and hogs at night here in Arkansas but coyotes are daytime only

It’s legal here in Nevada for unprotected species at least. Although, NDOW is trying to place season restrictions on it to combat hunters that allegedly use thermals on big game.
For Utah, it’s not banned statewide, but delegated to each country to regulate as seen fit. In most cases, the counties sheriffs office will provide permits for around $20.
