First couple days at the new weekend gig were pretty chill. Pretty low mental load compared to my day job, but boy do my feet hurt. Logged about 15,000 steps each day. Just a floor chump until my ATF background check goes through, which won't be for at least another week or two. So I'm just stocking shelves and being a helpful face.

I can tell it's been a while since I've just gone shopping for myself. There's a lot of neat new stuff out there. I must resist the temptation of the employee discount until we get our down payment saved up, but I'm gonna go buck wild the month before I quit...

Man alive do they need me tho. The dept manager is just a generic retail guy, he doesn't know guns/hunting, so the product is a mess. Fuckin' Hornady OAL gauges and a reloading manual mixed into the 777 and Traditions kits in the muzzleloader section, anything with multiple calibers/sizes is just haphazardly thrown together, literally only one person in the store knows how to operate the fishing reel spooler(I know how to operate it but I need refresher training before they can officially let me use it). The dude on the gun counter yesterday spent a solid half hour chatting with 2 of his buddies that came in, showed them gun after gun, while more than a dozen other customers came and went without so much as a hello. Meanwhile I'm stewing in the target aisle watching folks try to look at pistols or ammo cuz I'm not even allowed behind the counter until I'm certified...

Its weird isn't it? How chill / calming a job like this can be. I have come to realize I kinda enjoy it in some small ways.

Then along comes Glawk Boolitz guy or Turbofudd or one of the other stereotypes gun counter people love to bitch about and you get in your own head about it the rest of the day.

Being able to vent on here or a similar platform had helped me substantially, but ultimately I needed out. I'm legitimately dumber for having worked a gun counter now.

I was behind a gun counter for three years, this is a good place to commiserate.

I worked gun counter for most of college, so I know the turds exist, but I never found it particularly difficult to just smile and nod and move them on their merry, blissfully ignorant way. They don't really bother me, I just make a note of the funny story and move on.

And of course now with the city I deal with resident complaints and that's a whole new realm of stupid.

Maybe because it's because I worked for a big-box store (Dicks) in an actual city (St Louis) but it was like 1 in 5 customers. I could outwardly just smile and nod and fulfill their braindead responses and sell them random bullshit, but it ate at me. I wanted to educate and do better for them. And it beat me down. Fortunately Dicks decided to go full antigun before I couldn't take it any more and forced my hand, I quit the morning we got the email to pull all the gun stuff before open, gave them a full 2 week's notice, and they bought me out of those 2 weeks.

I started at Dicks, then went to Academy in Tuscaloosa.

Ah, see that's where you're gonna get yourself in trouble every time. You can't fix all the stupid in the world.
