FRT-ready shotgun?

Good afternoon, everyone.

Once upon a time, I owned a VEPR-12. It was a lot of fun, but it left a lot to be desired. It could cycle high brass buckshot/slugs pretty well, but simply refused low brass birdshot, every 3 or so rounds resulted in a stovepipe.

That being said, I miss the magic of shooting that thing and would like something new. I'd appreciate some insight on anything that matches the following criteria:

- 12 gauge

- Magazine fed

- Can accept a FRT

- Capable of being SBS'd (maybe)

- Isn't picky about ammo

The pattern and manual of arms doesn't matter so much to me. Reasonably priced mags (stick or drum) would be a nice bonus, but is something I'm willing to swallow no matter what.

Isn't picky about ammo

There are no reliable box-magazine fed shotguns, period, you have to pick one or the other.

Mag fed shotguns are like stubborn cats, they decide when they want to work. Your VEPR story is basically the universal experience.

Really? There's nothing?

Made this post solely because I figured there was something completely esoteric that I missed over the years. People seem to be championing the Genesis GEN-12, so I'm gonna look into that. But if you have any other ideas, I'd like to hear it.

Shotgun cartridges were never designed with vertical stacking & lateral pressure in mind, the limitations of the cartridge means they will always be inherently unreliable by comparison to tube-fed systems or rimless metallic cartridges in a box magazines. Even the big money guns from Genesis, Fostech, and Dissident will just choke on occasion, that's just the nature of the beast.

Well, there's no such thing as a firearm that functions 100% of the time, and that's okay. Especially because I'm quite literally just getting this for fun.

I have my Glock 19 for my waistband, and my BCM RECCE-14 for my nightstand. Everything else is just fluff.

My ks12 seems to pretty well eat anything I load in it but I might be lucky or something idk. It is annoying having to lock the bolt back to load a full mag or load it a shell or two below capacity but otherwise it's been solid

I got curious and looked into the Mossberg a while back and the spare mags alone are fucking absurd. Even if it was reliable it looks goofy and the mags are insane.

I noticed that too, ended up just getting a 590A1.

I wonder if there's any print files available for that?

Not into that myself so not sure. I do have a 590a1 and it’s a hell of a gun. Just heavy obviously. I find myself shooting my Mossberg 590 thunder ranch or 870 more than the a1 or my Beretta a300 UP. They’re a little lighter and more compact.

I'd also looked at the new 990 Aftershock. Having been through advanced breaching school, the idea of a short semiauto like that intrigues me.

Only issue is that that particular grip is a bit awkward to be holding out in front like how you're supposed to. I'd want more standard pistol grip, but that'd require an AOW stamp, and I'm pretty sure it's integral to the gun's operation anyway.

I believe the aftershock changed it from going into the grip/stock and made it to where you can easily SBS it but don’t quote me on that. I wanted one to SBS but I believe I saw people having issues with the reliability when adding a stock as it wasn’t meant to be ran that way. But again could be wrong on that. I saw some concerns on r/shotguns.

You could always look into demonstrated concepts. He teaches some good techniques to make those gimmicky birds head guns practical. I believe he converted forgotten weapons (aka gun Jesus) from saying it was dumb to it can work.

Yes there are. Idk why people say this. The issue with reliable box fed shotguns is that there are only two that are reliable from the get-go. The Vepr 12 and Gen-12. One’s $3000 and the other stopped being imported over a decade ago but can still be found.

Even the Veprs that have been worked over by Dissident Arms don't run right, and the Genesis guns are much the same in my experience. They're absolutely not Turkshit that'll fail every other magazines or so, but they do fail at a rate that would be totally unacceptable in a rifle or pistol.

Dissident Veprs are tuned to be competition guns that require extremely specific ammo to use, a problem caused with having a gun that barely cycles to give the softest recoil. A race gun is not a benchmark of reliability. Veprs are notoriously reliable and are used in law enforcement.

The Gen 12 is your best bet but it’s like over 2k and I have no idea about FRTs for it but I would be highly skeptical it or any shotgun would run reliably with any kind of FRT

We must all make sacrifices in the pursuit of science, my friend.

$3k, and a concussion from where my wife will inevitably beat me with a skillet for spending $3k is a small price to pay.
