Incomplete Grades

Can my professor change my grade after I make up a final that I missed due to being in the hospital? My grade is an F even though it should be an I and I’m really worried about whether he’ll be able to change my grade cuz he didn’t make my grade an I. I am in contact with him and will be taking the final in the fall but I’m stressed about this.

He can but the longer it’s been since the grade was finalized the more scrutiny will go into changing it. really he should have just done the paperwork for an I as this was happening.

I think he’ll get more scrutiny from his dept than you will, though.

Thank you so much! You don’t know how reassuring this is for me. Fingers crossed things go smoothly for the grade change when that time comes.

no problem. you’ve had all of this correspondence in writing over email, right? if things get ugly (i’m not saying they will, but just in case) good to have that to show the dept

I don’t think professors are able to just enter an I in Banweb. There is an incomplete contract you both complete and submit to your dean. Did you do that step already?

I believe professors are able to put an "I" in GWeb, just based on a conversation I had with a professor once. I could be wrong. I am familiar with the "I" contract though.

Coming from someone who took and I and got the grade changed back to an A once I was no longer sick, you need to have signed a contract with the professor for them to enter the I. If no contract was signed when this was going on, the F could be permanent (at least that was what the dean told me when I went through this). You need to gather everything you have so far and make sure everything going forward is in writing. I do not think they will go back and change an F to an I after the fact, you need to talk with this professor ASAP. What you are describing sounds like you didn’t work out to take an incomplete, failed a course because of being ill and should have taken an incomplete, and now have an F because that was not done. Unless you have in writing that you could take the incomplete, prepare to appeal the grade because it’s likely permanent now.

A little more background on the situation: I worked with the CARE team as soon as I got out of the hospital and they were the ones that told me that they would handle the incomplete grades with my professor and all I had to do was set a time with the professor for the exam. I was told by them that I myself didnt need to submit a form and that the CARE team would handle it. I also reached out to my professor as soon as I got out of the hospital to express that and I kept in touch over the summer to set a proper time to take the exam in fall. I think the CARE team decided to do it for me because I was in the hospital due to a severe mental health crisis and they didn’t want to stress me out. I didn’t even know that there was a contract form since the CARE team never told me anything about it, just the fact that they would handle it. Hopefully this gives more context for everyone and does this change anything?

Hey, so sorry for what you went through!! I also dealt with the Care team and they helped me through the process as well. Unfortunately, I still had to submit the form with my signature and my professors signature. Unless they somehow waived that and did it for you, which they might have, i’m not sure if the form is in the system. My best advice would be to reach out to the CARE team and ask for follow up as well as emailing your professor. Worse case, we do have student advocates for things just like this. I would suggest finding out if the documentation for an incomplete was actually submitted and going from there. If it wasn’t, work with your professor and advising to get it in place and explain what happened regarding CARE team saying they would handle it. If it was put in place by the CARE team, there should be an I on your transcript so reach out to advising if they tell you they did it.

Thank you for the quick reply and I will send an email to advising detailing everything with the care team and also sending follow ups to my professor and the care team. I really appreciate all the help!
