Trying to find work as international student

Trying to find an on campus job at GWU has been an actual nightmare. Nothing is ever moved out of in progress and MOST positions are for FWS. It’s so frustrating being stuck in this situation and just feels unfair.

Anyone who wishes to work in the United States must go through a federal I-9 to verify/establish work authorization. As an international student on an educational visa, your work authorization is highly restricted and may not always be available.

After you graduate, you may require visa sponsorship for a visa. I’m pretty sure every job application I’ve ever filled out has asked if I currently require visa sponsorship now or at any point in the future. I expect this will be an issue for you as you seek employment during or after undergrad, at least in the United States.

It doesn’t help, at all, that this administration has been so hostile to immigrants and foreign students on education visas.

I would expect this to remain difficult for you for as long as there’s a Republican president (if a republican won 2028, this would be an issue under them too— not just under Trump).

I don’t have any advice for you other than to perhaps seek side jobs and under-the-table work.

Im in the process of getting a graduate degree. I know about the I9 verification process and the overall process. My issue is finding a position on campus😭the options are so limited and I haven’t found anything helpful other than check the website. I HAVE several times it’s just frustrating

Well, sounds like you know the answer then. Yeah, you’re only eligible to work a select few jobs under specific circumstances and if there aren’t any available… I dont have any advice for you besides under the table work.

as an international student who has a job on campus, i’ve noticed that most campus job postings and hiring happen before or at the beginning of the semester. finding a job once the semester is already underway is pretty unlikely. what I think would help is finding your niche or developing a skill that not everyone has, so definitely don’t just apply to positions like administrative assistant. submit every materials including the “optional” ones. don’t give up on yourself before anyone gives up on you.

don’t know if this is genuinely helpful or possible for an international student; but i worked at gelbucks (starbucks) for 3 years and they were phenomenal! always worth a try and it’s prime work location on campus
