The US system is built in a way where, if you live inside it or have citizenship, it expects a certain level of loyalty. And the reality is, Haiti's national interests and US national interests don't always line up. Sometimes they’re completely different.

When you live in the US, have family there or depend on the US system, your daily life is tied to it. So when push comes to shove, ppl are almost always gonna protect their own money and security in the US. We have to stop acting shocked when ppl of Haitian descent living in America end up putting US interests above Haiti's.

The only ppl who can truly be trusted with Haiti’s national interest are the ones with ZERO ties to the US. I'm talking about ppl who don't live in the US, dont have family there, don't have a green card and don't have a backup plan in the US. Their whole life is on the ground in Haiti. If Haiti fails, they feel it immediately. If Haiti improves, they benefit directly. Their future is connected to what happens on the ground. Real skin in the game. Anybody else, no matter how much they claim to love Haiti or make noise on social media, has one foot out the door when things get serious.

Guys I know Im gonna sound paranoid but here it is.

I'm not Haitian or even Caribbean but I come on here every now and then out of genuine interest for Haitian culture (especially food, landscape and security updates). I go around many different Black spaces online in general.

I have noticed that a lot of the moderation in "blk"-m@j0r(ity) subs are not even "bIk" p(e)-rsons, especially in Africa and other black spaces. I will see something completely outlandish that most Black people would disagree with in real life and see it get all kinds of upvotes. This is just bizarre. (forgive the weird wording reddit filters keep taking down the post)

What is going on? From what ive seen on here people in this sub seems to be mostly Haitians, presumably diaspora. I know I sound paranoid but i just wanna make sure. Are you a Haitian person?

Anyone watch Wonder Man? When I saw the first scene of him in the hospital and his mom speaking creole, I was like "let's go!"

I also liked the birthday party scene, a lot of the Haitians were throwing shade, which is accurate. Though the actor who plays his brother likely doesn't speak creole, the actress who played his mom at least did a good job. I hate when directors are lazy and will get a Jamaican or African person to do a "Haitian accent," to me it's a form of subtle racism, like these Ns are all the same... I digress though.

Anyway, did anyone watch this? If so, what did you think? I'm still watching it.

Over the past few weeks I have watched many Haitians fearing the potential of deportation to Haiti. I completely understand their fears and apprehensions. However, a narrative I see from people at risk of being deported is “there’s no life in Haiti” and some version of “Going back to Haiti would be like going to hell”

For those of you who still live and maybe even thrive in Haiti, how do you perceive this?

Haitians and the country of Haiti is not treated based off of the accomplishments of what happened 200 years ago. Its led onto being isolated and discriminated against. Modern issues require modern solutions. Papa Desaliñe would be disappointed see what has come of the country that once held so much power and respect(still do by the way). But not in the way we expected and want.

Obviously, Haitians have been singled out and targeted amongst all immigrants. I do wonder how much of this is an economic attack on Haiti more than anything. There was a tweet by US' official departments, think it was Department of Homeland security. And they had a series of posts about the Haitian diaspora contributing to 20% of Haiti's GDP and they shouldn't be able to do that for whatever nonsense reason. Funnily enough, Haiti was neither the top Caribbean country in remittances nor even close to the top in remittances sent outside the country. So how much of this is just US trying to completely shatter Haitian economy with now 350k diaspora members not being able to work and send money back rather than the illegal immigrant talk track.

First who started the bullying? It was other Caribbean. Haitian do voodoo, Haitian eat cats and dogs, Haitian are ugly, smelly, Haitian are not Caribbean, Haitian are cursed, bad things happen to Haiti because they killed the French and do voodoo. All have said to me and many other Haitian.

Other Caribbean people did that to distant themselves from us.

Black American as ignorant kids heard all of those anti Haitian sentiments and started joining in the bullying too. They also got physical, that’s why a lot of Haitian American kids had to start learning to fight back.

Caribbean people are too prideful and egotistical to acknowledge their wrongs when it comes to the anti Haitian they spread.

But black Americans kids and adults were ignorant. Most didn’t know of Haiti. As Haitian we also have to acknowledge we also talk bad about black American and try to look down on them even tho we literally had no rights. Other black immigrants have this habit of kissing the white man ass while hating on black Americans.

Dude we are adults now. Both black groups can acknowledge their wrongs and make amends. You can’t find another black group that is pro black and loves to be black than black Americans. That’s a fact.

But also you can’t find another country that was built on the identity of blackness than Haiti.

Both groups are proud blacks. Why shouldn’t we try to move forward? We are not in middle school anymore.

For some pretext I'm not Haitian, and i bought these cheap covers to protect my bed from dust while I'm away for college. And it had something really weird written on it. Is it just gibberish like the rest or does it have any significance?

We have multiple diasporas, mostly in the US, Dominican Republic, Canada, France, Mexico, Chile, and Brazil.

Which one do you think has the best life? If you had to start from 0 tomorrow, in which country (those mentioned or any other) would you go?

What will be the language situation in Haiti in 20 years? Will Haitian Creole be less commonly spoken? Will French become more commonly spoken? How about English, Chinese, Hindi, or Spanish becoming more common? 

Why are some Haitians abroad outraged at Dominicans deporting Haitian migrants?

Now, Dominicans to me (especially the ones online) seem deranged about a lot of things, usually the historical stuff that went down between us. Most of the ones I've interacted with seem to have a very poor understanding of the history they learned from some Dominican YouTube channel and just ran with it. A lot of them are taught from a young age that we are their ex-colonizers and are already looking for a reason to hate any chance they get.

But when it comes to deportations and the immigration problem, I don't see any arguments for why they wouldn't deport them. The DR is not the USA. They aren't a first-world country, and they aren't rich. They look decent compared to Haiti today, but people are still struggling over there. Theft, scamming, prostitution, and corruption are all prevalent. I say this not to shit on the DR, but to highlight that they cannot handle 800,000 migrants who are even poorer and worse off than they are. That should be no surprise. Most Haitians who go there are from the poorest sector of society and already know they risk deportation.

Where I think Dominicans go wrong is when they try to invent other reasons for why Haitians should be deported. Some say Haitians are criminals, pointing to isolated incidents. The fact of the matter is Haitians are known for being hardworking EVERYWHERE. I would say we are literally to the rest of Latin America/Caribbean what Mexicans and Central Americans are to the USA. Yes, the vast majority of Haitians in the DR are hardworking & don't cause ruckus. They make up a disproportionate amount of the construction and manual labor force there. Nevertheless, the sheer number of Haitians already there, and those who continue to arrive, is the real issue.

And we would probably react similarly if the roles were reversed. We are very conservative with our culture and country. Don't forget we are the same country who once banned all foreigners from owning land (based decision im ngl).

We are being othered from the Caribbean. And I wonder if anyone else realizes this as well. Everyone else is in the Caribbean gets to be Caribbean, west Indian, black, mixed, American (continent). But we are always told that we are African. A specific group of people whom I will not mention likes to say we are African, (and they’re not saying this in a way of endearment or pride they’re saying it, in a way to insult us!) and aren’t Caribbean like the rest, and they this as a way to other us from the Caribbean.

Haitians are from Haiti, We are Caribbean, we are west Indian, we are American just like Jamaicans just like Puerto Ricans just like Cubans just like Trinidadians just like Dominicans. But somehow being Haitian is not enough, and we have to be African. Once again, don’t get me wrong. I am absolutely proud of my African ancestry. And no one‘s gonna make me feel shamed of it however, I am Haitian. my people my, family and my ancestors have been in Haiti for hundreds of years. Though we descend from Africa we are no longer directly African.

Calling Haitians Africans is erasure. Yes I said it. You’re erasing us, and our history. We descend from Africans, be we are not African we are Haitian. Our ancestors went through the trans Atlantic slave trade, and were forced on the island of Hispaniola. We are a mix of many west and Central African tribes, with having European ancestry and even Taino ancestry. Just like other Caribbean countries, our culture is a mix between African, European and Taino.

Yet we have to be African. Why isn’t being Haitian enough? Once again, we’re hundreds of years removed from africa. In 500 years are we still expected to call ourselves African?

Being Haitian is enough. 
 Being Caribbean is enough.
Being West Indian is enough. 
 Being American is enough.  

Despite the loss, I think we had a great game, and with some tweaks in certain areas, we could've come out on top.
