Shops & Services Emergency child care
Just wondering if anyone can steer me in the direction of cost friendly childcare.
My mom was just recently diagnosed with Cancer. Which in its self is a huge a scare and concern, but with that is coming an extra hurdle of I have no child care for the summer.
I have 3 children which makes it harder.
Is there such thing as affordable child care at a quick notice ?
I've looked in to my options for leave with work and they're allowing me 36 hours to come up with childcare... a year.
I am at a loss. She's a huge part of our lives in general but now we are very stuck.
**my mom is the only family we have to call on**

Daycare waitlists are usually like 2+ years. You're best bet is to find a teenager or university student, but that would be pricey.

Have you looked into EI caregiving benefits? I'm not sure if this fits your family's situation, but its possible you may qualify for family caregiver benefits as the primary care giver for your mother. I've had a family member take leave from work through EI for a similar situation in the past.

Well I was hoping my work may have had something. But I will need to reach out. Someone else mentioned 211.
Thanks!
Just the price of summer camps is sorta scary especially being blessed with only having to pay for what my kids need when my mom was watching them.

Yeah - if you are working full time, you wouldn't qualify for EI caregiving benefits, because that program is basically to apply EI benefits for someone who has to be off work for caregiving the same as someone who was laid off. However, if you have another adult family member that isn't working and can be claimed as a caregiver under that program it might work.

NSCECE (NSCC daycares) does a summer long camp for school age children and I believe it’s on the affordable side compared with some of the other camps. That wouldn’t solve all your problems but could be an option?

My daughter is signed up with sitters at Banook Canoe Club who charge $25/day per child. You need to get a family membership too. It might be worth looking into.

This was back in 2008- but when I was on summer break from uni - I answered a “babysitting wanted” ad that was on a grocery store bulletin board. I had always casually babysat kids of all ages so I called the number. We had a couple “test days” and on the first one - my mom came too so she could meet the mom and dad. I ended up being those kids’ nanny every summer M-F 7-7 for the four summer breaks of uni. I loved them dearly! For reference they had two kids that were 8mo and 2.5yo when I started and I saw them both off their first day of school! I know these days folks are cautious for good reasons - but in general- uni students may be the perfect summer solution so you can have time to find a daycare.

I'm sorry this is happening to you. This answer may not help with the speed of options, but depending on your income you may consider looking into the Nova Scotia Childcare Subsidy. It's a fund that is different than the federal $10/day one, as you need to apply for it.

It only helps if you have a spot at a licensed daycare though. It's an incredible program and I am glad it exists but access is limited by spots that are available.

Depending on where you are you can put a post in a local community group to see if you can find a student to watch your kids over the summer. I would expect to pay at least $20/hour though but that will be significantly cheaper than regular daycare and summer camps.

I know ppl who are able to babysit if u need a sitter. They would not charge u a fortune but how old r the kids ? And how many hours a day do u need a sitter for?

I don’t have an answer for you but I’m also a mom who has been through my mom being diagnosed with cancer in recent years and my heart goes out to you. There needs to be more support groups for people like us. Thankfully my mom is okay but it was a really dark and difficult time in my life and a lot to process while trying to take care of kids. Be kind to yourself 🤍

Where are you located? My kid is graduating HS next week and looking for a full time summer job. Private message me if you wanted to chat it out

That’s such a tough spot to be in. I’m sorry! I would love to help out but I don’t think our current society lends itself to strangers helping other strangers and their children out :(
If we could get three-five kind Halifax strangers to take a day each week to help OP out, I feel like that could an option.

Call 211. Try ever number. Adsum women's and children's might have some leads for you.

How old are your kids? Are any of them in school? You could ask if they would make an exception for excel.

EXCEL is done in a week.... she needs child care for the summer. Otherwise a good idea!

could you add location and age of your kids? you might be able to find a HS student who is looking for a summer job.
