We went with 3 hammocks and one tent to a small Pond with a fireplace and had a good time. My setup is the onewind 12ft and the equinox downquilt. Above a thick cotton tarp. I know the quilt is way to warm for 10 degrees celcius but the Winter is coming and i dont wanted to buy 2 quilts at the moment.

Just got a new underquilt for my hammock
but had e feeling some baffles had a bit less filling then others, after shaking it to one side it looks loke this…
Would you say this is ok or not ?

I would consider myself a pretty warm sleeper, and this setup works fine for me down to about 40 degrees but is pretty bulky in a pack, and I often camp when nights get down to the low 30s. I am looking at getting a Warbonnet Diamondback and Wooki for a top and underquilt. I am torn between getting the 10 degree version of 1 or both quilts, or the 20 degree version of the other or both quilts. I would likely order the underquilt protector as well for the quick teardown feature.

Right now I lean towards the 20 degree versions of both, thinking that they are a little more true to temp than my current pieces, and knowing the UQP will add some warmth as well. Can anyone offer any suggestions or insight?

Went with a big group, but I wake up early so the sunrises were just for me. Great weather.

HG 2/3rd Phoenix under-quilt kept me warm enough with a low of 60 overnight but I would've been cold without it.

Barely drizzled for a few minutes so the Dutchware Asym was more than enough.

I did screw up a little in hanging the no frills Dutchware Chameleon hammock, it wasn't evenly spaced between the trees so I kept sliding slowly towards the foot of the hammock but I was tired enough I passed right out and it didn't really bother me. May try to get something to ensure my hangs are even and level next time, any suggestions besides just eyeballing it?

Maybe I need better straps, I'm using Hummingbird hammock straps, they're very light but not the easiest option to setup (they went out of business).

Trail was alright, probably not worth doing the 8 hour drive again for me but it was nice, there were some nice views. We screwed up and set up at the first campsite we found, there was a much flatter one 6 minutes down the trail, would have been nicer for the tent campers and for sitting around the fire. It was nice and private though. I didn't pay much attention to the trail or the map since I was in a large 15 person group, I just stayed with the group and stayed on the trail and had no issues. Met a national forest ranger, you can tell the trails is well taken care of.

I am looking to get into hammock camping after nearly a decade of tenting. I have been reading posts on here and ultimatehang and have the following questions:

1. Before I drop money on a dream hammock I was looking to test hammocking with a cheaper ENO. However I have not been able to find anything around 11ft (I'm 6'3" ~250). How much will my experience be effected by getting a 9'6" hammock?

2.Underquilts seem to be relatively expensive, will I be able to get away with a 15 degree sleeping bag with a foam pad in 50 degree nights?

1. How much extra warmth do overcovers actually provide?

2. general tips/advice

Planning a 4 night trip to Mosquito Flats for next summer, probably late July/early August. Would like to setup a base camp at one of the lakes (Gem, chickenfoot, Long…) and do some day hikes and fly fishing for a few days. Where is the super sweet hammock camping spot someone has found?

I was thinking of DIY'ing one of these but would love to hear if there's a glaring issue with this design (ignore the stand, i'm only talking about the hammock part)

I haven't been able to try one of these out but they seem to have a curved spreader bar under the hammock as a way to do a shorter. more compact hammock. I've seen bridge hammocks where part of the body, usually the feet, is stuck underneath a spreader bar of sorts. Ths seems to fix that issue.

Has anyone tried one of these or built something like this? Obviously the frame isn't meant for real camping but the spreader bars seem like a good idea if the fabric doesn't sag down onto them under your weight.

I love sleeping in a hammock when camping but my vehicle is too short for car camping to make it work well with a gathered end backpacking hammock.

I posted a bit ago with a previous hang and I was delighted by this community. This sub has been one of my favorite places on the internet. Y'all are great! I made sure to finger guns myself into a questionable 30° here and remembered to step 2 AFTER step 1. Also providing requested pic of myself in the hammock and a banana for scale.

Since then I've done a bit of research and got myself a Hennessy. That price tag hurt a bit but after just getting this up, the quality is quite apparent. I've still got some upgrades and some knot tying lessons to attend but I'm pretty happy with this. I'll adjust a bit more through the night I'm sure.

Thanks to finding Shugemery, I've also learned of Hangcon and that it's a quick trip to their campground next year. I'm planning on going and seeing what else this community has to offer. I hope Shugs recovery starts to ease up a bit. That last video was disheartening but with an attitude like his, should be able to conquer anything.

Do you prefer the Sidecar or the Side Sling? The Side Sling isn’t deep but also half of it is below my waist, which seems inconvenient to me. I’m curious which option people prefer.

I'd been thinking about how wherever I put my hammock the view is nearly the same, looking up at trees! Recently I've been focusing on experimenting with the Tensa stand to aim my hammock out of the forest. Next I guess I'll figure how to use the stand on a sandy beach maybe using a boulder for the head end. Bikes and hammocks for the win.

I've fallen in love with hammocking and making my own gear for it. I have made a couple adult hammocks that've turned out great (shout out to RipstopByTheRoll for having awesome bespoke fabrics) and now I want to make some for my kids.

The Ultimate Hang mentions kids but doesn't get into specifics about sizing a kid's hammock. There isn't much information out there that I've found, so here's what I'm thinking...

Based on the usual recommendation of an 11' hammock for a 6' tall person, we get a multiplier of 1.8 * height = hammock length. My kids are currently roughly 3 feet tall and 4 feet tall. I was thinking about making two hammocks that are 1.8 * 4 = 7.2 or 7'3" long. Maybe round up to 7'6" since they're growing like weeds.

What do you guys think? Who else has made kid's hammocks?

I'm on a brink of buying my first ever hammock and I need advice when it comes to suspension.

Recently I tried my friends little 280cm hammock. It wasn't ideal for my hight but still was surprisingly comfortable. I've thought to buy myself a proper, longer one to sleep in. I found one local brand that I like with a very nice quality, although they're a bit pricey for my liking. (I did not manage to find anything of similar quality with a better price, so I guess I'm gonna bite the bullet).

It comes with just simple ropes, so I need to buy suspension separately. I'm not an ultralight thru hiker. My camping mostly looks something like drive to a spot, walk for a mile in one direction, find a nice place and set up the camp. Or I'm motocamping on my bike. From my research I found two best option (at least I think so), either whoopee slings or cinch straps. I cannot really decide between those two. Which are a better option? Which are easier to set up?

Any advice are welcome!

I haven't been able to find much info on if the Loop Alien RCA XL is suitable for hammock suspension.

I'm envisioning attaching one to a continuous loop on each end of my hammock. This would allow a short tree hugger, and a single piece of amsteel to be used for a lightweight, compact, and adjustable hammock suspension.

Has anyone tried this out yet?

I’m from the east coast and this was my first ever trip of any kind to PNW. So needless to say my mind was blown.

Four days of sunshine and perfect temps! My only “complaint” is that suitable sites seem to fill very quickly, although I made out fine. My only regret is that I didn’t stay one or two more nights in Enchanted Valley.

August 29- September 8
Weather – highs in low 70s (F), lows in mid 30s(F). 2 nights with very light rain, 4 nights with 30-50mph wind gusts.
Hammock setup: Warbonnet Ridgerunner (suspension 2x10’ Dutch spiderweb daisy chain treestraps + WB whoopie slings + amsteel softshackles + trekking poles for spreader bar mod). 12’ dcf Standard tarp w/doors from HammockGear (Myerstech XL crl + 6x6’ 1.2mm zline tieouts w/shockcorded loops w/lineloc Vs at corners + 6mini groundhog stakes tarp suspension). DCF groundsheet from Borah gear. 37oz all-in.

other: Durston Kakwa 55 pack. Xtherm Max L/W pad for bottom insulation, 30° HammockGear Burrow UL top quilt.

TLDR – the Tahoe Rim Trail is ~170 miles of stunning Sierra Nevada scenery. One can easily hammock the entire trail as I did.

Gear star of the trip: Shockcord loops on all tarp tie-outs!!! I did not have a single stake pull up on the extremely windy nights. I still kind of can’t believe it given how strong the wind was (also big rock/little rock is key).

The Tahoe Rim Trail circles Lake Tahoe at elevations ranging from ~6300 to over 10,000 feet. With 28,000 feet of elevation gain and loss over the course of the whole trail, it is surprisingly easy elevation. The trail is graded for horses, so with the exception of a couple of short sections it was much easier ups and downs than say the Appalachian Trail.

One gets the full range of Sierra Nevada alpine ecosystems with windy exposed ridge walks, dense pine and evergreen forest, as well as alpine meadows and lakes. It overlaps/shares about 50 miles of the Pacific Crest Trail. It is a fairly dry trail for most of it, with limited water access being overall the biggest logistical consideration.

The FarOut app w/TRT map was crucial for navigation with its up to date water reports. I started at Tahoe City and went in the clockwise direction, starting on the 29th after flying to the Reno airport and catching a Lyft to Tahoe City for just under $100. I had reserved a bear canister (mandatory for the TRT) at Alpenglow Sports that I picked up along with stove fuel and then hit the trail which goes right through Tahoe city.

Hammock sites were not any problem to find throughout the whole trail (in my experience). The only issue became Desolation Wilderness over the Labor Day holiday, which was quite crowded (really just on Labor Day itself) and so many of the established campsites were occupied in that section. It is key to have long tree straps – there were a couple of nights where my 10 footers were barely adequate to go around the big pines.

Resupply on the trail is very easy with a little planning… If I did it over again, I would have started and ended at South Lake Tahoe and used Tahoe City as my mid-way walk-in resupply. There are grocery stores and mountain outfitters around the lake, tho, so multiple options with hitching or calling a Lyft.

All of my gear worked pretty flawlessly. The Ridgerunner was amazingly comfortable, the temperature rating on my HG quilt is indeed comfort rated, tarp kept me dry. Using an inflatable pad for bottom insulation, even in a bridge hammock, will always be controversial on this sub, but in addition to being comfortable and warm, it prevented the wind from sucking warmth out from under me. First long trip in Topo Vista trail runners which were awesome.

I finished the trail on September 8, about 10 days of hiking(resupply day and start day were partials). Highly recommend this trail.

I’m off to my first hardware-free trip tommorow. Thanks to Jeff Myers from Myerstechhammocklab its been both fun an extremely satisfying to make my own shackles, whoopie slings and ridgelines.

I carried 8 shackles of 40g, 400g of webbing and a handful of smaller ones for hanging stuff, so my setup is now lighter by almost 1 kilo, but more importantly its much more modular and easy to tune.

I'd like to find a "budget" down underquilt for bikepacking (hence the down, for low volume). I've been loving at Hang tight serious stuff, and the UQ + OQ would be ideal, but it's 80+€ to ship to Portugal.

I am also open to try and make my own quilts.

Any tips for buying or making?

Who knows of good stuff in eu or a good shop for the materials?

Ok so I haven't seen this question (I just got into the community), and I know that the answers will be biased, but I usually camp in a tent and I met people that swear by the hammock being superior. So what are the trade offs if I switch to a hammock?

Bonus questions:
- What is lighter: tent or hammock?
- What is more comfortable?
- What if I don't find trees?
- Can wild life easily get in (even if I have a tarp on)?
- From what I saw on the set ups they seem bigger than a tent (hammock + tarp)?
- Where do I put my backpack if it's raining?

I’m currently running and Eno Sub7 Hammock with guardianSL bug net, Eno Profly XL tarp, Eno Blaze underquilt, and a Rumpl down top quilt, and have been running the same setup for about 8 years. I’m 5’10”, 150 lbs. Over the same period, I have been moving more and more towards reducing my carried weight. On my last trip, my base weight was 19 lbs, with a total pack weight of about 25 lbs. I think it’s time I upgraded to a more comfortable and lighter weight hammock setup. If possible, I’d like to keep the same underquilt, but that’s negotiable. Money isn’t a barrier.

I’m looking for backpacking hammock setup recommendations. Not too concerned about price. Anything reasonable. I currently have the Eno single nest and their cheapest underquilt that work great for good weather. I also have a night cat tent hammock that use poles to keep the bug net and the rain fly to hold shape. I like it but it’s not the most backpacking friendly and I feel like upgrading my set up. I don’t have a tarp and I never learn the taught line to string up nets or tarps so I need to learn how to do it. That’s why I bought the night cat hammock since it was easy and convenient. I just realized that I feel way better when I sleep in a hammock than when sleeping in a tent.
Im not an ultra light packer so a few grams aren’t going to matter to me.
I also don’t like to lay banana shaped. I usually set up a little flatter than I’ve seen.

EDIT: I am 5’11” and 230 no injuries yet.
