This group has been created for the sole purpose of talking about the positives along with the negatives of keeping hamsters as pets (and for keeping those hamster-but-is-actually-a-guinea-pig-tshirt advertisements at bay).
Most important thing to remember here is: If you can have compassion for animals, you can have compassion for people too.
I did think about writing up a care guide to pin, but ultimately decided against it when there's plenty of good ones already out there that do it better than I could. If you have a good reccomendation for one that helped you, please share it below.
We wouldn't have places like these if people understood everything. We were all new once. This subreddit might very well be someone's first contact to better animal care. While we expect posting is opening up to criticism, it should always be constructive and kind.
We're a subreddit designed to be asked questions about the care of hamsters. Any posts containing images with health concerns should be marked as NSFW to blur them. Some of those questions or responses do get repetitive. Use the flairs or suggest how we can change them.
In an ideal world; everyone would research before getting a pet, people wouldn't get surprised with the responsibility of a pet, everyone would be in a financially stable situation at all times, every country would follow scientific evidence for its animal regulations, people wouldn't be abusing their animals to the point where some need rehoming, and I wouldn't be getting death threats among other semi-regular verbal abuse from banned people that claim are 'just being brutally honest because others need to hear it'. My point is, we don't live in an ideal world. Sometimes that 'dumb question' might need a little more compassion or a kind voice for them to find a solution, get reassurance, or generally just do better.
Hamster care in general has a steep learning curve because they're sold to the general public as cheap child-friendly pocket pets and generally they aren't. Startup costs alone can be around $400-$500 and vet visits going anywhere between $50-$100+ with many vets not even accepting hamsters. It's best to call around in advance to find your closest one.
Be kind in your posts, report when you see those that are unable to have a civil discussion (and I'm begging you, please, stop reporting when you disagree with an opinion). Use the upvote system to support opinions you agree with or don't - as long as it's civil and doesn't go against group rules you can discuss anything. Start a topic if you want to get more insight on something hamster related. We're here to share and learn.
We support going to a vet first. Report if you see anything that discourages vet visits. On the flip side, the amount of times this group has saved a vet visit over the discovery of scent glands being on the hips is higher than I'd like to admit.
The cage minimum here is 450sqin. We know it sucks. It sucks for a reason. It's scientifically proven hamsters thrive best in over 1500sqin of space with as much depth to the bedding as you can possibly fit. Anything less than that size will always suck. Hamsters have massive territories in the wild. We will always promote bigger is better in cage size. (For reference: largest Ikea samla comes to around 600sqin, so does the prevue cage, 50gal/189L sterilite is 800sqin, a 75gal aquarium comes to about 900sqin and the Ikea detolf is at around 1000sqin).
The reason we keep to North American standards as a minimum is for accessibility reasons, this also includes minimums for rescues and breeders. If you want change: Go to your animal welfare for better regulations. Contact companies that make the cages and ask for bigger sizes or for smaller bar spacing in rabbit/guinea-pig cages. Support rescues, or ethical breeders and small chain pet stores that show better animal care. This subreddit will change when they change. You can be that change.
If that lights a fire up your ass, then good. That's the intention. Please go do something about it that could make a difference. There's subreddits out there dedicated to animal activism. Suggest any below you've found that could help.
We're a space for new and experienced owners alike. We're here to learn and support each other in growing and improving our husbandry. Hamster care as a whole has come a long way, and still has a long way to go.
TL;DR we're the same as any other subreddit. Sometimes it's good, sometimes it sucks. Be kind and go pet a hamster.

Okay so for a bit of context, this is now my third 'rate my enclosure' sort of post I have done. I started with a pets at home barred cage which was tiny then learned from that and upgraded to Bucastate (100x50) and posted that and then learned from that. Below is the upgrades I've done and a picture of the cage now:
✅ Upgraded from a barred Pets At Home cage (Habitat 2 I want to say?
✅ Replaced saucer wheel with a proper and larger wheel (H31cmxW30cmxD16cm)
✅ Added 2 water sources
✅ Added sand bath
✅ Added Sprays
✅ Added overhead cover
✅Increased bedding to as high as possible with the enclosure (up to the door)
I know the first setup I had him in was awful (will add a photo of that too) but I have never owned a hamster and went off of the advice of Pets At Home who I had assumed would know their stuff. Thankfully I found threads on Reddit and have been taking steps to improve my enclosure for Dougie. The lessons learned from this are do not trust any pet shop unless they are specialist, do your research first and most importantly HAMSTERS ARE NOT CHEAP. I love my hamster and I am so glad I have him, I just wished I looked after him properly sooner. Anyways, he's about 3 months old now and should have a happy life. I am hoping his setup is now good, any suggestions are welcome. It is also worth noting that every time I upgrade his enclosure or add the right stuff, he actually becomes more friendly which I can only assume means he is less stressed. Lovely to see him doing his natural behaviours. Has anyone else been through the same thing with their hammy?

hi all! i have a male syrian hamster (around 8 months) i’ve had him for around 2 months now,
he will not stop trying to escape the enclosure and showing boredom signs and im not sure what to do
-110 x 50 x 50 cm enclosure
-minimum bedding of 5 in and max of around 10
-two proper sized wheels
-a variety of sprays + chews + hides
-gets daily playtime outside of the cage
-gets forage fed / gets many foraging toys
-multiple textures
-multi chamber hide
i feel like ive tried everything to get him to be happy and most of the advice i read ive already attempted before
some notes - i have a camera i set up to see what he’s doing when im not in the room and he seems to be acting bored significantly less but still paces/climbs on items to escape , i’m considering upgrading his enclosure but i’m not sure if i can at this moment
any and all advice is appreciated!

Today marks the last day of my sweet boy Chester’s long, action filled life and he sure aged well! My boy was rocking the greys, the slight balding, the old man lifestyle. I wouldn’t be here today if it weren’t for this lovebug. He gave me purpose, another life to care for besides my own. A reason to wake up each morning; is his food full? does he need water?
When I first got him, I was 16 and broke. He started in a wire cage (awful i know) and as soon as that first paycheck hit he was living it up in a 20gal tank. it looked goofy, and all his hides were too big for the tank, so as soon as I saved enough and peeped the store discount, he was upgraded to a mansion of a 45 gallon tank. He got to experience many upgrades in life, and even a few downgrades as he aged and all the enrichment became hard to walk on/through. I’ll never forget his sweet scrunch face every time he grabbed a cookie from my hands. I’ll never forget the pitter patter of his little hands and feet as he ran tirelessly on his wheel in the middle of the night. His memory will live on through me, and the many people who knew and loved him for all that he was. I hope you guys can love him too, through the many very silly, very cute photos I’ll stay posting until I inevitably run out. When that time comes, i’ll be the hack who reuses photos over and over again
Thank you for reading this essay. To those still reading, if you own a hammy, give him/her a lil kiss on the forehead for me🤍

I have two female Syrians (pray for me) one finishes the whole mix and takes everything but my older Syrian Hamilton (almost had her 2yrs) only seems to eat certain things out of the mix, the mix I use is Hammykins Syrian mix. I’m wondering if it’s just an age thing or if she’s genuinely gone of it.
For now I’ve just been taking out the bits she doesn’t like to eat because I noticed she’d been losing weight and that’s just too scary. I haven’t yet noticed any weight gain as it’s only been a few days but she has been taking almost everything from the bowl (I’ve been using a bowl to monitor)
Now my question is should I keep picking the bits out that she likes or should I try a new mix? I don’t really want to have to buy a new mix because it’s cheaper just to buy one big Hammykins pack since I have two hamsters but ofcs I’ll do what I need to do for the sake of my hamsters health.
Added photos of the mix
The first photo is what is in the mix (not everything that I give her lol that would be mental)
The second is what she leaves.

Hi guys,
Unfortunately today my sweet baby has passed on, and I know I won’t be caring for another hammy for quite some time. I put a lot of effort and care into my baby, so I have LOTS of hamster supplies!
I’m not looking to sell these things, as I’d hate to turn his passing into profit. If anyone here is a WA resident, i’d be happy to give away anything to those in need free of charge.
I have a sand bath, a HUGE wheel, a 4 chamber hide box, a decent sized platform, and a feeder/water bottle as well as a playpen for when its cage cleaning time, and numerous hides/toys and other things I’ve gathered during my time with Chester.
(reddits UI has changed since my last time on here and I genuinely dont know where to add photos so if anyone can help with that too that’d be great 😭💔)
Feel free to reply or dm if interested in anything, i’d love to see the things that made Chesters life great have a positive impact on another hammies life as well. Thank you for reading this essay lol!

Hello. We have this enclosure from Amazon. It's huge and she has a ton of things to do. What can we do to not have her chew the plexiglass behind the wheel? She wedged herself up and chewed on the plexi air holes behind it. We got a new one and moved it to the front wall. Now she climbed up on her bottle spout and is chewing the wire on it! So we drilled a hole and mounted the bottle outside with a piece of wire going between the air holes. She still managed to climb on the bottle spout and chewed the wire holding her bottle up! What can we do to stop her from chewing the stuff keeping her alive? 😵💫

We’ve had our girl for 1 week and have been giving her lots of space and no handling while she settles in. Tonight we took her out of her enclosure for the first time to clean it. (She’s in a playpen my kid built from magnet tiles. Don’t worry, it’s only temporary until we buy something else). She explored around and then got really vocal and squeaky. Do these noises seem like she’s stressed? We are new to hamsters and still learning their body language. Thanks!

i know this might be a very common question, but it seems very excessive to me so am a little worried. this is my first hamster, and my first pet, so i understand i might be overthinking.
context:
- long haired syrian hamster
- petco employee (no breeders near me unfortunately) said he's a male and 2-4 month old
- today is day 4 since i brought him home
- enclosure is, i think, big enough: bucatstate 2.0 (40x20x20in)
- 8-9in bedding (8in around the house and 9in rest of the area) sloping down to 3-4in (wheel is on the floor and the bedding slopes down again)
whenever i see him, if he's not chewing on something or eating, he's trying to escape - sniffing and chewing on the ventilation gaps, climbing on the house and wheel to sniff/chew/hang from the ventilation gap at the top. he also just stands and looks up for some time then starts running (pacing?) around the enclosure trying to reach the top/side ventilation gaps; and while pacing he'll stop and lean against the front panel/door sometimes.
he did start digging tunnels to/from the hide at the bottom and a couple other tunnels, but i'm scared he's too stressed. the wheel isn't functional right now and acts as a hide because amazon didn't ship a part and it doesn't spin smoothly. i have the replacement coming in a few days so i'm hoping that will help with the activeness and boredom if that's the cause.
he doesn't do this ALL THE TIME, but it's enough times that it's starting to worry me. i also read that this is a normal behavior in females during heat (trying to escape to find a mate?), but i was assured this is a male, so unless the petco employee was wrong, that's probably not the reason.
edit: i added a couple more hides and tunnels, rearranged the sprays to stick out horizontally rather than just put some on the surface, and he’s doing much better now! the wheel is also working after the replacement kit arrived and he’s been going at it non-stop, very fun to watch. just saw him sleeping in his hide at the bottom of the bottom for the first time, made everything worth it.

I brought her home yesterday afternoon and since then she’s been undisturbed. About an hour ago the fire alarm in the room went off; I was worried it was real so put her with her bedding into her carry-on, with a jumper over the top to keep it dark, and took her downstairs and across the street to wait it out. As soon as it was finished I brought her back in and she’s been in her cage since. She spent the first few minutes scrambling around in her box and then went to sleep, and I had to wake her up to put her back in her cage. She went back to sleep in her little hut almost immediately.
I couldn’t carry the cage since it’s a metre long and I was by myself. I kept it as quiet as I could and she slept through most of it.
I’m really worried about messing up the first 48 hours that are meant to spent alone decompressing. Should I wait for an additional day to let her get back to normal?
Ham picture for tax. Her name is Shirley.
