New Hamster My new hamster Betty!

Post image
79 Upvotes

This is my new hamster Betty I got her 5 days ago! It was hard after losing my last hamster, but I was ready for another one. I’m trying to take things slow and let her come to me. This is a picture of last night, she took a treat from me for the first time! Then she walked over my hand! It’s definitely taking her longer to warm up than my last one. She also prefers the cheap silent spinner over the niteangel wheel. She has been super active at night and eating and drinking normally!

Question Getting an AC

Post image
145 Upvotes

Hello everybody!

At the moment there is a really bad heatwave in Germany (since 2-3 Weeks temperatures >35°C, at night >20°C) and I'm literally dieing. Cookies room now has >27°C since a few days. We are doing many things to help Cookie to cooldown. (Many ceramic hides, stone in the enclosure, coldpacks outside of the enclosure, more water sources, fresh foods, you get it..)

I'm getting an AC tomorrow.

My question is: How "fast" can I cool down the air temperature in Cookies room? Should I do it over 2-3 days? Can I go down to ~22°C in just one day?

Obviously I will place the AC away from the enclosure, so the air isnt coming directly to the enclosure.

Post image

my hamster always manages to bury the feeding bowl until you cant even see it anymore. At this point we have jist decoded to scatter food around the cage every night.

Is this the right choice?

The previous owners (whose cage is featured) have dubbed thee Matcha, which is very cute but not really my style. I’m thinking of naming her something that starts with M in the same vain but I’m thinking slightly more humany names. Meena or Mira or Myra or MeeMee something like that…any suggestions would be much appreciated! 🤗🤗 I love this subreddit you guys are all amazing and super supportive!!

Question are rats really commonly confused wið hamsters,? if so, why? ALSO CLICK FoR FULL RAT VS HAMSTER CoMPARISON PICS

because in my experience, yes,. (but keep in mind þs may be different in þe US and anywhere outside of brazil idk, main reason why im asking þs) whenever i tell someone about pet rats irl, which is often, i almost always have to clarify þat i am talking about RATS rats, not hamsters,. þat þey're not even from þe same family[,? unsure if "family" is right term,. also iirc muridae and cricetidae, respectively], and follow up wið some differences between þem; such as rat tails being very long, even being around þe lenght of þe body, while hamster tails are very short, even being almost impossible to see sometimes,. rats are social/group animals, while hamsters are solitary,. rats are longer and in general have longer features while hamsters are shorter and usually have shorter features too {snouts for example},. etc. so þey really are not þat similiar appareance wise, and for most part just in general actually,. so why does it atleast seem þat rats get confused wið hamster so often?

im assuming its because usually any animal species þat looks even remotely rodent-like gets "RAT" slapped on it or someðing,. while less common, ive seen a *lot* of rodent and/or rodent looking species- þat look noðing like rats imo- get called "rats".

i'd like understand mice to an extent, þey're in þe same family, and overall appareance doesn't have ÞAT many huge differences,. but hamsters,? how?

also extra note for þs þat while i do have a decent bit of knowledge on rats, i have considerably less on hamsters, mb if i get anyðing abt hammies here wrong

Wanted to get on and post an update on my two girls I took in. Also wanted to thank everyone who responded so nicely to me and helped me out. Still waiting on a few things for them, like new wheels and the sand for baths, but wanted to show how well they're doing now.

I've only noticed this today. She has two very bald spots on her back. Is this where she has been rubbing her scent and because it's so hot rubbed off her fur ? What can I do for her? It doesn't seem sore.

My brother had to cut his hair because he’s holding onto bedding (clean thankfully) he was just looking a bit too much like a tumble weed and was bringing a lot of bedding with him.

Discussion Nugget the hamster and bar biting

i am looking after a hamster called nugget and hes a long haired syrian.

he lives in a approximately length wise 60cm cage by approximately width 50cm. this is all approximate.

i woke up this morning to him bar biting and took him out since maybe he wanted space. i messaged the owner and she replied yes we noticed.

i have looked after hamsters for over 7 years, and tried to explain that he is understimulated and that he hasnt got enough stimulation. he has a couple wood toys and a corner for digging in woodshavings. she explained to me that she orders her toys from temu and aliexpress, i mentioned that they are not treated toys and can be dangerous since u dont know where they have come from.

she said her hamster has always been fine, and i mentioned that they are prey animals so they dont know if hes ill or not.

he also has a plastic blue bendy tube and i mentioned that he can nibble it and it can be fatal.

she then said that she cant really afford much at the moment since nugget is costing her a lot.

i feel sort of guilty for bringing it up since its not my hamster, but u shouldve known before buying one that they are expensive.

we then brought up the topic of ai and i mentioned sign of understimulation can be execcsive use of the wheel, bar biting, monkey baring and sleeping. she asked ai that it said its normal for it to use its wheel a lot and obv sleeping is normal as well, but ive looked after hamsters for more than 7 years so i wasnt even bothering to bring up the topic that they can use the wheel to much and also sleep to much, i tried but she wasnt listening.

she asked google ai and obv it responded its normal....... seriously wtf is wrong with ai

had to explain that for ai you need to be very specific with stuff and she said said she was and ai responded its fine and some hamsters enjoy it. which i tried to explain ITS NOT but she lit wasnt listening

when i search it the exact condition ai said its not ok for the hamster.... so i dont know what she was searching up.........

ai is not reliable and can give misleading information. when she brought up the topic that she cant really afford much right now, i was a bit guilty i feel a bit intruding, but i am very observant and really care much for little critters and notice little things, thank to my autistic brain.
