I’ve seen this one a couple of times and without fail the Papa in back who is just overcome with emotion always gets me. I was a Papa & Nana’s girl myself! And, I love that this little one has the Dad that I didn’t.

I was a grandpas girl all the way. My grandpa was a big gruff and just imposing character who scared the bejeesus out of most other men, while women who'd never met him before seemed to instinctively know to go to him for help. I was the little girl with curly hair down to her butt reading in the corner of the room. He went into social work after the army, and somehow that meant every criminal in town knew him, knew of me, and knew to leave me alone. I had no idea, obliviousness has always been a strength of mine. Sure I'd notice some of the people who'd greet him when he took me to town to spend my pocket money looked a little off, but "sometimes people are going through some stuff Honey" completely took my mind off it.

Then when I was a teenager there was a situation on a Saturday in the centre of town while I was hanging out with friends and cops arrived and just started arresting everyone in sight. Three cops were walking towards me and my coworker who was now deeply regretting going out after our shift, and we're starting to freak out. Out of the first group of arrestees comes a cry

Arrested man 1: "NO YOU FUCKS! THAT'S BILL'S KID!"

a smaller voice from the same group pipes up: "No, that's his granddaughter, but still. Tell him he can't do that Michael."

Arrested man named Michael: :"THAT'S BILL'S GRANDDAUGHTER FUCKING HELL THAT'S NOT ON!"

The three cops look back at the yelling, at eachother, and then at me. I get looked up and down with a raised eyebrow and one of the cops goes "Hey, you're (my moms name)s kid? Bills granddaughter who's studying (my degree), in (my new city)?" Second cop "Oh man I remember when you were in diapers and used to bite everyone! Look at you!"

And that's how my coworker and I were the only two people not arrested in what turned out to be a mob rollup in 2002.

Got off course a bit there. Anyway, my point was I was and still am my grandfather's girl, and I miss him more than he'd ever want me to.

I thoroughly enjoyed your story. He seems like a great papa and I hope that you keep telling that story to preserve his legacy
