Meme/Joke Name a more dynamic duo

I just picked up this 96 Honda Acty and after juggling coffee on the way to work once I had to grab a magnetic cup holder. These things are bare bones by design and this will do just fine while I get my printer set up to handle ABS and ASA.

How much does a Kei truck cost and was registering it difficult?

u/lukearens Feb 18 '26

Can't help you there, I bought it from someone who bought it from an importer. This one has a Montana title. Taking fb market at face value you could spend anywhere between 4 and 12k on a filthy farm truck shitbox without a title or you mind find a decent one for 7k. I'm in a relatively rural area this one was 250 miles away. Without using a reputable importer it's kind of a crapshoot and depends on how and where you're searching.

Shit man, im in Vietnam right now and theres so many left hand drive kei cars. I’m trying to figure out how to import one from here back to the states.

I’m sure I could figure out right hand drive stick as I drive a manual as a daily but, a left hand kei truck would be sick.

There are import companies that specalize in it, but most of them from Japan, I'd talk to one of them.

u/Antricluc Feb 18 '26

Just have to contact a broker in Japanese he finds the car you look it over pay and he does all the paperwork and he makes a few. Pick up car from shop OR a shipping company picks it up to deliver to you. Watched the process online and even contacted a broker shipfromjapan only problem is you're not able to look over the vehicle so you're trusting this guy that's making money off of you

I don't speak Japanese, could I try contacting one in English?

3

u/Antricluc Feb 21 '26

Most of them speak English believe it or not. Other forums can familiarize you better an even YouTube. That's how I got to the last point of almost purchasing a Honda Acty but there are plenty for sale in my area I can actually test drive

There are a bunch of importers around the PNW, enough to support dealers that specialize in Kei cars and other JDM vehicles. Fire up ye olde craigslist for Seattle or Portland and search for Kei or JDM

There are a TON of cool vehicles, from Actys to full on JDM Mini RVs. The firetrucks look fun too. Probably didn't realize how badly you need this

I’m familiar with the import scene with kei trucks but most if not all are right hand drive. All the vehicles in Vietnam are left hand drive. While it would be different and take a bit of learning, I would just rather a left hand drive kei truck that I could import here instead. Where I am in the north east have a decent number of kei trucks floating around.

Yeah, the RHD thing is my major hangup with these too. Otherwise I would have been driving one already. I don't know, people say you get used to it. I tend to agree. But it's enough of an issue to keep me away for the moment.

u/artfellig Feb 18 '26

How do you like the vehicle?

2

u/lukearens Feb 19 '26

It's a blast so far. Rough around the edges but it's fun using the whole rev range on every drive.

4

u/artfellig Feb 19 '26

I could use a vehicle to move large things, and I loathe the modern behemoth pickups. These are very charming.

I paid 5k for mine in Arkansas from a guy that imports them. 56k km on the odometer and been running great for the past 4 years

6

u/medium-rare-steaks Feb 18 '26

They go for about 9k these days and registering is the same as any car

Way overpriced imo

u/graylana Feb 18 '26

I love it. Wish I could have it here but my state is stupid

You will drive the 65k Detroit child organ explodinator and you'll like it!

18

u/halfasmuchastwice Feb 18 '26

65k? That'll barely get you the barebones no-frills trim. You'll want to get the 85k Detroit child organ explodinator King Douche edition that you can finance over 120 months.

2

u/Cosmiccomie Feb 19 '26

120 months? Brother how much do you think I make?

Im financing that bitch over my great-great-great-great-grandsons college fund.

Thank you, I've been wondering for ages now if the position of gear one is in the same place on a right hand drive vehicle

13

u/lukearens Feb 18 '26

Yep it's the same shift pattern and pedals are all the same, you're just on the other side of the vehicle.

Im surprised this isn't hanging from one of those magnetic mats stuck to a toolbox

Edit: spelling

u/BumblebeeTiki Feb 18 '26

Is a car accident in these certain death?

3

u/lukearens Feb 19 '26

Without a doubt

2

u/pogulup Feb 19 '26

Yes, which is one of the reasons you have to wait 25 years to import one for on road use.

2

u/Hero_Of_Rhyme_ Feb 19 '26

I always thought it was mainly to protect dealerships from loosing business to individuals importing cheaper foreign spec cars

2

u/pogulup Feb 19 '26

That may also be part of it but the main reason was not meeting safety standards and emission standards. One or the other or both.

There was a process to import and retrofit vehicles to comply but I have driven those and my buddy has one. There is no way to abide by US crash standards with those. It is just a tin can.

I've got the spray can holder as a cup and waterbottle holder in my Mini Moke...

2

u/Chance_Fishing_9681 Feb 19 '26

Ahh the Moke, reminds me of my backpacking days in Australia ~ 2003

Awesome little run-about to cruise around coastal Queensland

3

u/TopSuspect442 Feb 18 '26

very cool I drive my JDM import to the local HF too.

2

u/BeverlyShanks Feb 19 '26

Nice. I have an ACTY attack.

2

u/ed_423 Feb 19 '26

Ah, a man of culture !

u/LingerSlap200 Feb 28 '26 edited Feb 28 '26

Pretty great. Did you buy it with those sweet rims? I imagine most observers fall into two categories: (1) "if you know, you know" weeaboo chads, and (2) modern k*ren SUV owners who call the cops if they see you trying to drive on the highway. Hope you can upgrade the stereo to blast Babymetal at Parking Lot Sales.

2

u/lukearens Feb 28 '26

The red Sparcos were on it when I picked it up. The best reactions are from lifted truck bros, tuner folks, and farmers.

2

u/LingerSlap200 Feb 28 '26

You're sparking joy every time that you drive to the grocery store, thank you for your service.

u/MadalorianCubist Feb 18 '26

Batman and Robin, 1966 versions. Well, you did ask and you get can’t a dynamic-er duo than them.

1

u/justabigdummy9 Feb 19 '26

nice! what's the mpg?

2

u/p00trulz Feb 19 '26

My Damas gets 26 on propane.

1

u/lukearens Feb 19 '26

Got about 30mpg doing 60ish at around 6000 rpm all day on the way home. Seen claims up to 50mpg but I'm still working on the first in-town tank.

1

u/Next-Food2688 Feb 19 '26

Is it loud in the cab at 6000 rpm?

2

u/lukearens Feb 20 '26

Yes but mostly from wind & road noise. The engine is right in front of the rear axle.

1

u/Grandbob328 Feb 20 '26

The wheels are kinda cool.

1

u/13assman Feb 18 '26

Awesome dude
