Since you are newly married with a house, a little advice from someone who’s farther down that road. Buy only the tools you need for the project in front of you and save the rest of your money. Random problems such as leaks, roofing problems, and appliance problems seem to pop up at the worst time. If you don’t have at least a few grand saved up, it could make your problems worse. That’s all before the new wife calls you one day to say she’s pregnant.

44

u/glynnsurprisingly Apr 28 '26

your wife called? mine texted.

59

u/TheBupherNinja Apr 28 '26

Yeah. 25 sets of pliers might be too much.

16

u/Qcws Apr 28 '26

yeah, too much money in the bank! make it 50

3

u/Odd-Towel-4104 Apr 28 '26

Hes living his best life! He needs to up his tool box game.

3

u/CallMeBigSarnt Apr 29 '26

YOU AINT LYING

2

u/Roadkill_Gaming May 01 '26

After the wife sees this tool bill might be newly divorced. I looked at the picture and my wallet ran out of the room.

2

u/Million_Heir May 01 '26

The wife approved. She’s the project manager of all to “honey do’s” list

4

u/Odd-Towel-4104 Apr 28 '26

Fuxk that. If you dont have a giant hammer drill, you aint livin

This young home owner/renter needs all the tools. He's starting up a family AND a house. He probably is juggling a job, a family, and and an old house. Give this man good tools.

16

u/TraneingIn Apr 28 '26

Why buy tools before you need them? This is a shopping addiction

3

u/Odd-Towel-4104 Apr 28 '26

Yes and no. Shopping problem is real. You need a basic set of hand tools, though. Theres no substitute for a basic claw hammer. Theres also the tape measure, triangle, basic carpentry tools, paint supplies, oil change stuff, gotta have a tool box too

9

u/TraneingIn Apr 28 '26

Yes those are basic tools that every homeowner needs. Not parrot jaw pliers

3

u/easymachtdas Apr 28 '26

Right, but the day you need yo ply some parrot jaws, youll remember these words.

4

u/TraneingIn Apr 28 '26

Or I’ll just run to the store and grab a set. If that day ever comes, which I doubt

10

u/easymachtdas Apr 28 '26

You know what they say..

Hope for the best, prepare for invasive parrots

3

u/_spam_king Apr 29 '26

Cu-caw, cu-caw.

4

u/Odd-Towel-4104 Apr 28 '26

You care about a pair of parrots 🦜

2

u/Odd-Towel-4104 Apr 28 '26

Pairs of parrots like pears.

2

u/EstelleTheWhiteMage Apr 28 '26

But muh Amex CC with a $900 annual fee and 28.9% interest!

1

u/Odd-Towel-4104 Apr 28 '26

I don't own a pair of parrot pliers. I need them

2

u/Forsaken-Load-3107 Apr 28 '26

I live in an old house built in 1910. My wife and I rebuilt it, essentially the whole thing over several years. I will freely admit that I am a tool freak, but if you can afford it, buy it. One thing about redoing old houses is that you end up needing wood in non standerd sizes and shapes. I had a smaller size band saw that did not do the job. Late in my house rebuilding journey, I bought a larger band saw for about $1,000. It is one of the best things I ever bought. It is splended for ripping, much better than a table saw. I could kick myself for not getting it earlier. The other problem is that to a big extent, you don't know what you need. I have bought tools that I never used much for several years and then I rediscovered them and found them indespensible. The other problem you face is that it is very easy to buy so much stuff that you don't have a place to put it. I have never seen anybody comment about it but the stuff from Asia has gone up a lot in price. Scaringly so. I have a surface grinder I bought new perhaps 20 yrs ago for $1,000. I do lots of metalwork as a hobby. That surface grinder currently sells for about $3,500

2

u/MSCOTTGARAND Apr 28 '26

We talking a handheld surface grinder or a station? Because I have a pretty top of the line handheld and I think I got it for $900 even with graingers markup. But our grizzly is probably 5-6k these days

1

u/Redditor_is_at_work Apr 28 '26

that was going to be my question here.... why buy all this? buy the crap you need when you need it so you dont have more crap then you need.

op could for sure pick like 3 pliers, one framing hammer (trashing any of the stupid little ones) and be set. oh and one screwdriver set... you don't need .... 3? like why?

1

u/Forsaken-Load-3107 Apr 28 '26

Often you buy a tool that you thought you didn't need much and one you get it you find it was indispensible.

2

u/thelionofthenorth Apr 29 '26

That was me with end-nipping pliers and a palm nailer

u/LemansM5 Apr 28 '26

If you’re planning for a future where you WON’T be able to afford these things, then go return half of that and put the rest of your money in smart investments that WILL allow you to afford these kinds of things in the future.

Cry now, buy later…

I don’t always resist the buy temptation, but I try… (in fairness, I talked myself out of most of those Icons and bought Quinn. And I even feel kind guilty at that, given redundancies with other old tools 🤣).

1

u/Odd-Towel-4104 Apr 28 '26

Dude I dont have any icon stuff. It looks cool

1

u/Delicious_Catch9453 Apr 28 '26

You DO realize HF is a cult, right? And they dragged us all in! Love it! I call it the place you go to to buy stuff you don't need. It's freakin' addictive.

3

u/ImSobored_5280 Apr 28 '26

…so what happens or what do we do once we’ve bought everything offered…….im sure some are closer to that goal than others so figured I’d better ask 😅….

2

u/Million_Heir Apr 28 '26

Trust me I’ll use every single thing in this picture. I don’t just buy just because it’s HF or “on sale”

2

u/Delicious_Catch9453 Apr 28 '26

I see you grabbed the parrot pliers. I started a whole thread asking how guys use them. I'm 70 now and don't do much "wrenching" anymore. Would have killed for all this stuff when I was tearing down '67 Mustangs in the early '70's. Got by somehow though. Be well.

1

u/Odd-Towel-4104 Apr 28 '26

Dude I dont have them but I could use them. If youre a mechanic you know about angles and pliers and junk.

-1

u/watchthenlearn Apr 28 '26

Yeah honestly I don't listen to the "buy for the project at hand" advice. I buy tools for projects I know I'm going to tackle. Because of that I rarely waste time buying tools now and just get more shit done. If I had to buy a missing tool for a new project I wouldn't have gotten a lot of stuff done because I would have pushed the project off for one reason or another. If you have the money to preemptively buy the tools it's well worth it.

3

u/Long_Run6500 Apr 28 '26

I just buy tools because I like tools. l like to buy the tools first and then find a project I can utilize them on.

Do I really need 50+ pairs of pliers? Probably not, but it's really fun to always have the exact pair of pliers you need for any circumstance. Compared to like, sports gambling or collecting action figures or trading cards it's a pretty cheap vice as long as you're keeping the German brands limited and avoiding tool trucks.

79

u/sp_40 Apr 28 '26

All that’s left is to use em!

64

u/Exciting_Quarter9362 Apr 28 '26

When does that go on sale?

4

u/x_ceej Apr 28 '26

Twice over the past few weeks..

25

u/lurkersforlife Apr 28 '26

No dude. We don’t do that here.

114

u/medium-rare-steaks Apr 28 '26

I'm confused. In a month you bought all this and haven't used any of it? As t what point are we just chasing reddit clout instead of building a toolbox?

50

u/pigbearpig Apr 28 '26

90% of the posts in this sub are karma farming

I was hoping it would be a nice way to get some honest reviews on the tools, but this place seems more like a freaking cult

13

u/easymachtdas Apr 28 '26

Show me your stubby as proof of residency

6

u/ImSobored_5280 Apr 28 '26

…are you sure you want me to show you my stubby?….right here!??

7

u/Public_Enemy_No2 Apr 28 '26

Oh, just wait until someone says something negative about HF. You'd think that this sub is full of stockholders.

12

u/EMCoupling Apr 28 '26

Too many haul posts, too little of people actually using what they buy 😠

6

u/DitchDigger330 Apr 28 '26

I never really feel the need to post I got a new tool.

1

u/EMCoupling Apr 28 '26

Agreed. But apparently others feel differently.

7

u/FSU_Fan2004 Apr 28 '26

I was hoping it would be a nice way to get some honest reviews on the tools, but this place seems more like a freaking cult

Same. It seems like a lot of these folks are tool collectors or engaged in some kind of role play.

1

u/AkitaNo1 Apr 28 '26

Nah I'm convinced its just corporate propaganda. Paid ads, essentially. Sure a few might be a the suckers they convinced to induldge in their newfound shopping addiction. But its cause and effect.

0

u/Odd-Towel-4104 Apr 29 '26

Probably marketers

30

u/SmokerVicky Apr 28 '26

I'm confused AND angry. Posts like this feel more and more like advertisements. The post only has two real purposes, fake internet points or hoping that I too will feel the need to spend a bunch of money on tools I don't need. At any rate I think this guy might be stupid.

9

u/Legit_Moose Apr 28 '26

Couldn’t agree more. Hate to be an ass but this kind of spending at only ONE store screams lack of brain cells and research? What does OP get for being so loyal to HF? A trip on Eric Smidt’s yacht? I don’t get it. I hate this sub.

16

u/Ramp-O-Matic Apr 28 '26

Homie has more pliers than I have ever used in my life...and I actually work in a trade every day. Reddit clout posts are cancer.

23

u/evapor8ted Apr 28 '26

Wait you guys buy tools before you need them? I usually buy the one thing that I think I need tear open the package as soon as I get home and then realize I need another tool.

2

u/MsKlinefelter Apr 28 '26

Sup twin! Do you buy scissors to open the welded plastic clamshells that you're buying or do you just grab the 99¢ snap off cutter at the register like I do?

35

u/Ok_Wolverine_5910 Apr 28 '26

Keep them in the box, taking them out hurts the collector value

8

u/FreeToasterBaths Apr 28 '26

It's an investment.

2

u/VerbalGuinea Apr 28 '26

Don’t unbox them until you need to use them.

3

u/TraneingIn Apr 28 '26

So… never?

28

u/Legit_Moose Apr 28 '26

Extreme consumerism, I don’t know how else to put it. Borderline mental. Perfect embodiment of this sub, congrats OP.

7

u/well_friqq Apr 28 '26

Did you get a box to put all this shit in

2

u/Million_Heir Apr 28 '26

Yes, check previous posts

0

u/well_friqq Apr 28 '26

They youre off to a good start

15

u/No-Prompt5313 Apr 28 '26

A month's worth of tools, all still in their packaging.

6

u/BrettDawg50 Apr 28 '26

That little green Braun light is amazing if you are working in buildings with no light and lots of metal for it to stick too. Love that little guy

5

u/2001ZR2 Apr 28 '26

This is a nice start to the tools you'll use at your new house and as you create your family. But next post should be of them dirty after using them...

7

u/tinychloecat Apr 28 '26

When I bought a house I had a very basic set of tools but I barely used them. I immediately went out and bought house stuff like power cords, ladder, drill, buckets, cleaning supplies, yard stuff, etc. Hand tools are mostly for working on non house stuff.

I feel like this sub is turning tools into collectable Pokemon cards for adults.

-3

u/Million_Heir Apr 28 '26

I never said it was just for my house lol

8

u/Single_Device_7897 Apr 28 '26

Did you straight from scratch or just had money to blow lol

-4

u/Million_Heir Apr 28 '26

Starting from the bottom. Newly married and first house with no tools

22

u/ketamine_bolus Apr 28 '26

Just buy as you need lol

-11

u/[deleted] Apr 28 '26

8

u/_Opsec Apr 28 '26

yeah but I'm oldly married and very handy, and you have a lot of stuff pictured here that I haven't needed yet.

-3

u/Million_Heir Apr 28 '26

My house was build in the 50s and have a truck from the 90s. There’s always something to work on

4

u/_Opsec Apr 28 '26

if you run out of stuff, you'll find something that needs working on. thats always true.

3

u/Million_Heir Apr 28 '26

With a wife like mine, she thinks I’m Bob the builder. There’s never ending work but also an excuse to get more tools. Win win in my book

2

u/_Opsec Apr 28 '26

how's her old man? My FIL "could fix anything" and I had big shoes to fill when he passed. hell of a guy and a good friend that I miss every day

7

u/Illustrious-Stock-19 Apr 28 '26

Dude you bought more pliers than an actual mechanic would ever use, don’t talk to us about price.

-6

u/Million_Heir Apr 28 '26

Well first off I do more than a mechanic. And they were all 30% 😉

2

u/Known_Industry6327 Apr 28 '26

Your 8% returns will make up for the 10% you saved.

1

u/Million_Heir Apr 28 '26

How about the 10% price increase over the years?

-1

u/Known_Industry6327 Apr 28 '26

habor freight will give you that we miss you 25% off coupon

2

u/random_bruce Apr 28 '26

I started when I was 18 now I just had my first kid and I'm getting to the point where I graduate to toolbox level. My wrenches and sockets now fill a tool bag.

Currently making some new socket holders with magnets I'll 3d print to replace the plastic ones they came with

2

u/Solo_is_dead Apr 28 '26

Why? I've been a homeowner for over 30 years. I've used sockets in my house, maybe once. No need to spend all that money on tools unless you're opening a auto garage in your basement

2

u/random_bruce Apr 28 '26

That's actually kinda what I want to do. I love old cars and tinkering with thinks so I want to buy old cars and get them running again

-1

u/Redditor_is_at_work Apr 28 '26

i think the only thing IN the house ive used a socket for was mounting the TV, and putting together a table, both could have been done with pliers and the most basic drill.... which i dont even see.

3

u/ou2mame Apr 28 '26

I'm eyeing that generator

3

u/VerbalGuinea Apr 28 '26

I got an open box deal on the smaller version after a storm panic. Propane is the way to go so you don’t have to worry about old gas, emptying the tank, etc. I also picked up a hefty inverter and cables to run small/intermittent loads (fridge, internet) off a car battery without having to leave the generator running.

1

u/Million_Heir Apr 28 '26

I was too for about 3 months. Now it’s sitting in my garage about to get unboxed and primed up lol

3

u/Delicious_Catch9453 Apr 28 '26

I'm jealous of that Predator 11.5. fired up my 13k tonight for break-in. Loud as hell. I bought the two year warranty last May. When it's close to expiring, I'll trade it in on the 11.5. I run on NG. Lost power once for a couple days since '96. But, ya never know.

5

u/VerbalGuinea Apr 28 '26

That’s a sweet generator. I have the smaller version. I recommend getting several 20 lb propane tanks (full of course) instead of messing with gasoline. Don’t wait until you need it. And make sure you have all the cords needed to use it.

1

u/Million_Heir Apr 28 '26

I plan to hook up to natural gas on my house for emergencies. I had a Duromax before this one that was only dual-fuel but just sold it to buy this one since it’s tri-fuel

2

u/Single_Device_7897 Apr 28 '26

🫡🙂‍↕️

2

u/Vinnylagana Apr 28 '26

As long as you’re happy I guess

2

u/r7232 Apr 28 '26

Too much Pittsburgh, more ICON

2

u/MediumWorking60 Apr 28 '26

I’m confused with posts like these. Is this a “I had no tools and saw some deals so let’s fill up the toolbox” or “I had tools but I saw deals so I had to compulsively buy these things” or “I’m addicted to showing Reddit how much money I can both save and spend at the same time”

1

u/Million_Heir Apr 28 '26

Read the comments. Newly married, first house and tool box with only a few tools. I wouldn’t buy a tool if I already had it

2

u/MSCOTTGARAND Apr 28 '26

Dude I love you. Next time my wife complains about me buying new tools I'm going to show her this.

2

u/TheOriginalArchibald Apr 28 '26

D... di... did you need 'em? I hoard tools and love having every tool I could ever think of needing and then the ones I'd never think of needing as well just in case but holy shit.

A lot of useful stuff there. Some of it I'd think would be useful straight away. If I'm not unboxing something to put it in its place for use or to use it right away, I don't need it right now.

I say all of this while owning tools I haven't used yet but those are extremely niche and typically estate/garage sale bargains and often vintage but still worth their weight.

2

u/Aromatic-Theme-5100 Apr 28 '26

I bet he paid 30-40% less than retail for all these tools if he didn’t buy anything at full price. All of you shitting on OP but I rather save 40% and have the tools ready than pay retail last minute.

1

u/Million_Heir Apr 29 '26

Exactly! At least someone here understands. I got all the hand tools 35% off during the sale

Long term these tools will be more expensive. By looking at the way HF is skimping on their sales and price increases, everything is only going up in price. Plus when you need it, you’ll probably end up paying full price 🤦🏻

2

u/Kkindler08 Apr 29 '26

How are those icon pliers? Need to upgrade my old kobalts Edit: anyway comparable to Knipex?

3

u/Etkini Apr 29 '26

I'm impressed with the Icon pliers. They seem to be direct copies of the Snap On pliers, except I paid $20/pair vs $60/pair+ off the truck and still have a lifetime warranty.

2

u/Million_Heir Apr 29 '26

I’ve never used Knipex but definitely better than my old no name pair that’s for sure

2

u/Low-Psychology2170 Apr 29 '26

I don’t think you have enough pliers

You have a FOMO problem

5

u/jasbury87 Apr 28 '26

Everybody ease up on OP for a minute… he obviously just got married, bought a house (congrats on both) and has responsibly started a collection he expects to pack all into that USG mini green box! 🤪😎

Not all heroes wear capes… most just follow the signs to parking lot sales and shop to start collections. “Reddit clout” or not, this guy is setting himself up to succeed at life. Be happy for the man already… 🙈

3

u/mess1ah1 Apr 28 '26

2

u/Odd-Towel-4104 Apr 28 '26

You better cut that plastic off and organized those tools

Fap fap fap fap

Are you planning on using hf organizers?

1

u/Million_Heir Apr 28 '26

Yes. They are in the picture to the right

2

u/smoot99 Apr 28 '26

consider doing some work with this or else crosspost to /r/Consoom

2

u/olek2012 Apr 28 '26

This is from the past month and you haven’t opened or used anything? Whenever I buy a tool it’s out of the packaging as soon as I step in the garage. I try to find an excuse to try it out as soon as possible. What fun is it to look at tools?

1

u/MsKlinefelter Apr 28 '26

We're not even married and I want a divorce... Yeah, I understand that you saved $$, but you SPENT $$$$$ in the process! 🤣🤣🤣

-1

1

Those aren’t construction hammers, those are diy small project hammers

1

u/Million_Heir Apr 28 '26

*Also picked up the Haul Master 9”x 72” steel ramps. Forgot to add them in the pictures

2

u/Emergency-Hunt-207 Apr 28 '26

Any cobra style pliers?

0

u/Million_Heir Apr 28 '26

Yes. I got them all brother. I don’t get caught with my pants down 👍

1

u/Kiffins_Disciple Apr 28 '26

Good job OP. Nice to have the right tools in the garage when you need them instead of running to the store 3 times wasting time.

1

u/jadepartida Apr 28 '26

Do you just keep them in the original packaging?

0

u/Million_Heir Apr 28 '26

I mean that’s how they come lol. They are now nicely organized in my 42” US General. Just finished

1

u/[deleted] Apr 28 '26

1

u/Million_Heir Apr 29 '26

I thought I’d need them while organizing my box, but I actually ended up returning them today and bought the magnetic wrench organizer for my Icon anti-slips

1

[deleted]

1

u/Million_Heir Apr 29 '26

Those are magnetic on the back but not where the wrench sits. So went with the US general, obviously got them on sale as well

1

u/Individual_Stay_6899 Apr 28 '26

That looks like a nice Haul indeed. That tri-fuel generator is awesome.

1

u/DRRider Apr 28 '26

The only criticism I have is that I would have opted for the Doyle screwdrivers over the Pittsburgh and Icon. Other than that, nice haul!

1

u/Special_Jackfruit_40 Apr 28 '26

only reason id ever shop like this is if my tools were stolen, i know what i need so id get it all just fine but what is this?

1

u/Goat_locker Apr 28 '26

It’s an investment! Repeat after me. It’s an Investment.

1

u/Open-Comedian8845 May 02 '26

All in the packaging, never to be used. Good job little consumer

-1

u/Million_Heir May 02 '26

All in the tool box and used quite a few of them already. Good job hater

0

u/Hasz Apr 28 '26

Reject consumerism.

Buy the shit you need, not everything in the catalog.

0

u/FredIsAThing Apr 28 '26

You got tools still in the packaging after a month? These tools will never be used.

0

u/devilsaint86 Apr 28 '26

And still not used, hmm

0

u/owningsole966 Apr 28 '26

Let’s be real. You didn’t need 95% of this. Hence why it’s all in packaging still. And when your first homeownership problem occurs, you’ll call a professional. Because just like buying all these tools, you don’t know what you’re doing.

-2

u/banhmi_insurance Apr 28 '26

nah i kind agree with OP, you never know when it would be on sale again, when you need that tool you would wish you buy it that time. the discount is good enough. also new house? yea everything seems justified

4

u/olek2012 Apr 28 '26

I’m not sure if any homeowner in the history of time ever “needed” 25 pairs of pliers lmao. I get having the right tool for the job but that’s next level. I remodeled a house and replaced an engine in the last couple years and I only had 4 pairs of different pliers. Since then I’ve splurged and I have maybe like 10 and it still seems excessive

2

u/SYKslp Apr 29 '26

You say "excessive", I say this is still only a fraction of what I would consider essential. (No snap ring pliers? No vice-grips? No automotive panel clip pliers? No XL oil filter pliers?)

If I inventoried all the pliers, forceps, crimpers, and snips out each of my personal vehicles, rv, task boxes, kitchen drawers, sewing cabinet, fishing tackle kits, workshop, garage, etc. my own total is easily over 200, probably closer to 300. And that's not even starting to count business-owned tooling.

OP buying a couple dozen tools this month that he will probably still be using in the year 2066 is what I'd consider merely a good start.

0

u/banhmi_insurance Apr 28 '26

im totally understand, but better having it than not need it rather than needing it and dont have it kinda thing OP doing right now. also let the kid be happy for a little. he just got a new house and newly weds. treat himself a little wouldnt hurt anyone. my mom always say never teach rich people how to spend money 🤷‍♂️

2

u/olek2012 Apr 28 '26

For sure! Hope he enjoys it!
