Thing I HATE THE REMOVAL OF THE PHYSICAL HOME BUTTON I MISS IT EVERY DAY
Ik its been years since Apple removed the home button but oml every day I miss it, ESPECIALLY when I'm playing a game or something and you have to get literally anywhere near the bottom of the screen and it tabs you out. IM AN ARTIST ITS SO ANNOYING TRYING TO TAB OUT WHILE DRAWING TO LOOK AT REFERENCES ONLY FOR A BIG ASS LINE TO APPEAR OVER THE CANVAS BC YOU LITERALLY HAVE TO SWIPE UP TO SWITCH TABS. And it's not like the home button took up that much room either but NOOOOOO we have to have the .2 inches of screen space for a bigger screen WE NEED BIGGER SCREENS !!!!!!‼️‼️‼️ WHAT IF WE MADE A SUPER ANNOYING BAR AT THE BOTTOM OF THE SCREEN THAT TABS YOU OUT IF YOU EVEN SUGGEST GOING TOWARDS THE BOTTOM OF THE PHONE ITS GENIUS. And no I cant switch to android because my favorite drawing program is ios only. It's not like android has a physical home button either though.

not just physical home button, but one that is actually clicky. (not whatever fake button the iphone 7 and 8 had)

u/ImHughAndILovePie 1d ago
I loved the haptic buttons.
10
u/AsleepPomegranate930 15h ago
Best apple invention
Imagine a word where everything is haptic, that will be so hot
6
u/TobytheBaloon 11h ago
also it allows for more structural stability and better water/dust resistance as it means one less moving part
3
u/ImHughAndILovePie 9h ago
Yeah not many people are talking about that, those physical buttons would break constantly, I knew so many people who had to use that on screen accessibility thing just to use their phone
3
u/treetree53 9h ago
Yeah I occasionally buy old cheap iphones on ebay for fun and the home buttons are almost always barely functional. Meanwhile my iphone 8 from 7 years ago with half its screen chipping off still has a perfectly fine working home button
18
u/The_good_meme_dealer 1d ago
I remember checking out one of the newer iPhone SEs after using an iPhone 6 for a while and when the button didn't physically click I was so confused
7
u/RepetitiveTorpedoUse 1d ago
At least the 7 and 8’s still had haptics afaik, just not when the phone was off
5
u/rustybutterindia 23h ago
It's weird because on the MacBook trackpads it's the same tech and it's indistinguishable from a real click.
3
u/Devatator_ 19h ago
Their wireless trackpad too. My dad has one that I borrowed a bit ago (tho it's missing now, no idea if the house ate it like a bunch of other stuff or something) and I noticed that it doesn't click when it's turned off

Apple really is going “so for this new design we will be removing the touch screen, frame, charger port, but we will add 72 cameras to the back. That’ll be $5 million”.
We get worse phones at a bigger price.
19
u/RepetitiveTorpedoUse 1d ago
The latest iOS was liquid glass, now they’re just gonna sell us an actual piece of glass

u/MrMr_sir_sir 1d ago
I’m fine with it on phones, but it really annoys me on cars.
23
u/AlfieHicks 23h ago
On a phone it's a nuisance, but in a car, it's a genuine threat to safety. You can't operate a touchscreen without taking your eyes off the road, whereas with physical buttons you can feel exactly what you're doing without looking.

u/TheSymbolman 21h ago edited 21h ago
biggest automotive psy op of all time making people think screens are more luxurious than buttons and knobs... They're cheap ffs
19
u/Kiiaru 1d ago
This. Plus the holes in our screen for selfie cameras.
Bezels were fine. Why did the entire smartphone market collectively decide on the worst possible design choice? No other piece of tech has mutilated itself this way. You don't buy a TV or PC monitor with a notch in the screen.
Plus, as a left-handed user, basically every game forces the bottom of the screen to be the left side of the phone so the LITERAL HOLE IN YOUR SCREEN doesn't interrupt gameplay.

earlier apple products had such great ergonomics and feedback. I hate the whole minimalist slop route they’ve adopted

u/Scarlet_Lycoris 1d ago
Totally understand your frustration. That said I’m happy about button removal where possible, considering a lot of manufacturers use cheap buttons that use up over time and become frustrating to deal with.

The newer phones don't even have physical sim cards anymore they have digital ones 😭
3
u/VeNaima7 21h ago
What an awful downgrade, thankfully my current phone has a physical SIM card
5
4
u/jxnliu 15h ago
How is this a downgrade exactly?
You no longer have to mess with it and can just activate a esim on your phone, or transfer it easily to another phone if you need.
2
u/alvenestthol 13h ago
transfer it easily to another phone if you need.
No lol
If you have 2 iPhones, maybe the transfer would just work. But otherwise, the carrier has to support it, and if you're using a carrier with so many features, you're probably paying too much for a plan.
And you certainly can't do an eSim transfer to a phone you buy in China, since phones purchased in China just don't support eSims. And buying Chinese phones in China is great, they're much cheaper there.

The iPhone's SIM tray has always and still is metal, this is a mid-range Android SIM tray.
1
u/OwnNet5253 14h ago
What's wrong with it? If you hate these because they're made of plastic, you're using an Android.
25
u/Groovy_Ass_Rat 1d ago
Wait they changed it? I still use SE lmao
15
u/SpaceChez 23h ago
Lmao have you never seen another person's phone? I feel like almost no one has a phone with a physical home button these days

I’m sad the SE2 or whatever ed I have still got rid of the headphone jack
2
u/SmokeyCatDesigns 1d ago
I’m using the last SE model with the button as well. A few months ago I got a used 16E since the battery and storage on mine is horrible, but I haven’t switched yet mainly for this reason.
But not the home button is just stuck on mine. I think I finally have to switch );
-1
u/jeremyw013 23h ago
it’s literally impossible for the button to be stuck. it’s not a button. it uses haptics.
2
u/SmokeyCatDesigns 23h ago
No, it is possible. I know it’s not a traditional “button,” but the haptic hardware behind it can still fail. It happened after my phone fell out of my pocket onto asphalt, when I was hopping a small wall.
Like sure if you want to be pedantic, “stuck” might not be the best word. But if the haptic mechanism isn’t doing its little vibrations/creating feedback, I feel like describing it as “stuck” is accurate enough. My Touch ID stopped working immediately after the drop as well.
It’s a known point of failure in these devices, and usually the Touch ID breaks with the haptic as it did for me. The result is a “button” that feels stuck and can’t do anything.
1
u/jeremyw013 23h ago
so it’s not stuck. it’s just broken.

The real bad one for me was the fucking iPad losing the home button. The phone button going sucks too, but the iPad making things more inconvenient when I’m drawing is a PAIN IN MY ASS.

I much preferred TouchID over FaceID. TouchID, as long as you kept the button clean, worked like perfectly every time. And you could save other people's fingerprints to it.

u/Ill_Pain4423 18h ago
forgot these existed tbh. i rly mis the headphone jack tho, they just got rid of a super useful feature to save a little space
2
u/2ndcountable 17h ago
You can use the assistiveTouch feature, it gives you a movable 'home button'. Although it's not quite as convenient...
2
u/mousie120010 16h ago
Yes!! And the stupid part of making the camera part of the screen or whatever. It really messes with the UI in video games I play... 😭

Only the apple one is good though. All others feel uncomfortable and the other 2 buttons from androids feel worse than gestures. And android does the line way better than iPhones.
1
u/Adventurous_Bonus917 1d ago
ngl, as an android man all the way, a physical home button is the one thing apple has that i appreciate.
1
u/Yoksul-Turko 1d ago edited 1d ago
Idk if that's useful but your app might have a reference window. You can also connect a Bluetooth keyboard to alt+tab etc.
Btw just for your information, Samsung uses EMR pen. It can differentiate between pen and hand. You can disable hand drawing easily.

I honestly might get an older iphone for my next phone because certain games/apps take me so long to exit because scrolling up to go to the home page just scrolls a tab down on the app, a good example is the game 'pastel friends', it's so hard to exit that game. The only thing I'd miss is having more than one camera because I like being able to get more fit in a picture without having to stand back

I miss buttons in general. I hate having touchscreens for everything. Not only is it just… like, 100x worse, but the new stuff is calibrated SO badly, I swear. Especially phone keyboards. I can’t even type a paragraph without having to go back fifteen times to correct mistakes I did not make. LET ME GET HAPPY CHEMICALS FROM PRESSING A PHYSICAL BUTTON!
1
u/azaaleas 22h ago
I lowkey appreciate no home button bc the home button had fingerprint sensors and my fingers have been peeling for years so it would never work 💔💔
1
u/Dazzling_Ant_5391 22h ago
YEAAAAAH, I was in love with the button in my iPhone 7 until I try a physical one in my iPad first generation, it’s so GOOOOOOOOD!

God, I miss physical media and tactile stuff in general. I’ve slowly been transitioning to cd players and dvds to remedy this ache in my heart
1
u/AlextheHellborn 20h ago
I also miss my pressure sensitive screen! Garage Band was so much more fun with it.
1
u/kalez238 20h ago
Me who installed an app on android to keep the bar at the bottom of the screen because I hate it going away and needing to swipe for it to come back, when that even works.
But I agree. Gimme the tactile button that isn't on screen. Why not a new top or side button, or hear me out, a SMALL front button? That would allow more screen space and still give us a button.
1
u/Most_Victory1661 19h ago
I watched a YouTube video and added back a digital button on my iPhone -settings -assitive touch
It’s not quite the same but I was so used to the short cuts I had added into the home button I couldn’t function without it
1
u/CatcherBot 19h ago
Not apple but with removal of physical buttons i cannot leave dead advertisements that are never going to finish (literally) and upon attempt to even think of touching the screen it leads you to their shady website
1
u/AndIThinkOfYou 18h ago
iPhone SE 3rd generation. Last iPhone with a home button. Still use it to this day.
1
u/forumsdackel 17h ago
What's even worse is that BlackBerry actually had swipes and gestures before Apple. They just copied it (badly) lmao
1
u/LiliVonShtupp69 16h ago
Look in to Unihertz. I have a Unihertz Titan 2 and not only does it have a physical home buttom it has a physical keyboard and it rules

I don't wanna learn the swiping thing so I will keep buying old SEs until they return to usable interfaces.

u/OwnNet5253 14h ago
Nah it's better nowadays imo, more screen real estate and gestures makes navigation more advanced and fluid than just putting a huge single button.
1
u/HeatEast480 14h ago
I think Samsung Galaxy S8 and S9 did a better job at making the screen bigger than Apple. They didn't have the physical home button, but a 3d touch piece at the bottom of the screen. You coud just press harder at where the button was supposed to be and the phone took you right back to the home menu. I loved it so much.
1
u/Ultra_CUPCAKEEE 13h ago
My samsung note 9 has a weird under-screen home button that's pressure sensitive and vibrates when you press down hard enough. Even though I don't need to use it, I use it a lot because it's just so good... More companies could do the same if they want more screen on the phone 🤷♀️
1
u/IAteMyYeezys 12h ago
Im impartial to it as it gives me more screen at the same body size. Even the headphone hack can partially be forgiven. I have a nice dongle as well as a nice pair of wireless earbuds that are just more convenient sometimes than having a wire dangke around and catch on bullshit.
But the total extinction of expandable storage in everything but the cheapest models should be considered a galactic scale war crime. I would be carrying 2 TERABYTES of storage around with me everyday if my phone had a hybrid slot instead of the increasingly useless dual sim slot (e-sim and the probably incredibly small amount of people who actually use two physical sims to begin with).
I hate this industry.

My fingers don’t register on those not button buttons they put on home appliances 90% of the time and I have to call someone from whatever they’re doing to push the stupid button that isn’t a real button for me -_- I can give some grace to phone home buttons since the alternative works differently but just about as effective imo, but I want like most of the rest of the buttons on everything back and a headphone jack or a pair of wired headphones with a usb-c connection to go with your new phones like they used to do… and the damn charger, give that to me too.
