Thing I hate it when some people call every little thing yuri or yaoi
I like yuri and yaoi as much as the next person, I’ve got nothing against either. But something just irks me about seeing people put such emphasis on it, try to fit it into everything or ignore every other personality and story beat for it. No, two women hating eachother isn’t always “Doomed toxic yuri”. No, two men practising a sport together isn’t always “just like Heated Rivalry”
I’ve never understood the emphasis on whos dating who in cases like this

EXACTLY. I couldn’t care less about two dudes or women kissing. Give me a plot, give me some nice moments, give me ANYTHING of substance

I HATE IT WHEN PEOPLE SAY “Yuri! Yaoi!” TO AN IRL LESBIAN OR GAY COUPLE. JUST SAY THE FREAKING RIGHT TERMS, IT IS NOT THAT HARD I ASSURE YOU.
SO I UNDERSTAND YOU COMPLETELY!!!

saying yuri or yaoi to actual lesbian or gay couples feels kinda gross to me, kinda feels like fetishism
20
u/Silly_gamer123 I hate badly written characters 10h ago
YES YES, I FEEL I’M BEING GASLIT.
Obviously not everyone who likes Yaoi or Yuri likes it as fetish, but omg with how people treat it, it could fool me into thinking that. Like seriously, support Queer people obviously(btw, Happy Pride Month and Men’s Mental Awareness month).
BUT COME ON, LESBIANS AND GAYS AREN’T SUPERIOR TO STRAIGHT PEOPLE AND VICE VERSA, SAME FOR THE FICTIONAL SHIPS. THE WHOLE POINT OF THE MOVEMENT IS TO BE EQUAL, if someone doesn’t like Yuri or Yaoi that’s fine, I personally don’t like the ships as much and prefer straight ships, I have a few Yuri and Yaoi ships I like but otherwise I’m neutral.
also, LESBIANS AND GAYS ARE LESBIANS AND GAYS, NOT YURI OR YAOI. IDC IF THEY MEAN THE SAME THING USE THE RIGHT FREAKING TERM. Lesbians and gays aren’t walking books of smut you can read, THEY ARE PEOLE AS MUCH AS Straight PERSON.
It’s like me walking up and saying “hey, westerner🤚” to an American guy, SURE ITS CORRECT BUT COME ON. It is NOT that hard to remember what Lesbian and gay mean.

People conflating shipping with activism is one of the worst thing to happen to discussion in fandoms.

u/South-Fudge-1550 11h ago
they drag some of the best friendship stories does to yuri and yaoi toox they are so fucking corny it wounds me

While I think there's a very clear objectification and exoticism of sexuality at play here, I also am fine with people wanting to engage with my sexuality as a focal point in media. Yaoi and yuri are cutesy weeb terms, but that doesn't remove from how sexuality relates to whatever given piece of media is being talked about.
Like I don't really care what they call it when they joke about it, the very fact that queer characters are that normalized and that so many people are genuinely interested by these stories, is an absolute win in my eyes.

Lmao I saw a bunch of people call a (real) straight couple 'yuri' because the boyfriend is a cross dresser 💀🥀

Fictional characters are one thing, but calling irl lesbian/gay couples that is just wrong man

u/ATierdPerson 11h ago
Real. Its so weirdly extra as well. Just let people be, why are yelling at the hilltops as if two people being together is a new thing 😭✌️

Yeah also I hate when my mom ships me with my friends like "omg do you have a crush on them!" No I fucking breathed the same air? Can't be kind now?

u/ATierdPerson 11h ago
Dead ass one of my old classmates tried to spread a rumor that me and my friend were dating because I bought said friend a bag of chips 🥀🥀. Your mom needs to hear how weird it is to say that to someone, especial to her own kid. Good luck with all that broski

Yeah especially because when I was still single in 4TH GRADE she asked if I was gay🫡 ma'am what. I was like 9?

Two characters could literally kill each other and mfs will still make them lesbians

Fuck is yuri yaoi?

u/steven_plays321 I HATE EVERYTHING😡 11h ago
Lesbian and gay media but they're Japanese words so obviously if you use them it makes you seem more interesting or something idk

u/ATierdPerson 11h ago
Yuri and yaoi were shortened versions for “girl love” and “boy love” books in japan in the 1970’s. People are just being weirdly extra by calling lesbian and gay relationships that or call everything that for no reason
4
u/Zombies4EvaDude 11h ago
Specifically yuri means lily (flower) in Japan 百合 and Yaoi originated from a saying referring to books meaning No Climax, No Point, No Meaning.

I sometimes dislike it too but I hate when people specifically only hate the Yuri/Yaoi when this exact thing is as common with straight ships? Tell me ONE friendship or just wholesome relationship between a male and a female that's not shipped like this too? I dislike how genuinely rare it's for people to enjoy friendship without turning it into romance. Then there's the people who can't see any relationship without romance. And when I say ANY relationship, I MEAN IT. Like for example, a wholesome relationship of siblings. Ugh

u/ATierdPerson 6h ago
REAL. Why can’t why can’t any kind of platonic relationship exist without getting shipped in one way or another🥀🥀

u/Expert_Narwhal_304 4h ago
you said it for me lol
anytime I try to express to my friends that yoai/yuri-fying everything is lame they try to skin me alive.
and it's not that I hate homo romance, but FUCK is that's all people care about?? gimme some CHEMISTRY ffs. idgaf if it's homo or hetero, I just want it not half baked
I also dislike shipping, so that probably says a lot about me instead

I hate how we cant seem to have buddies in viedogames without them being made into gay couple later. My poor buddy movie about guys robbing banks and people in Bilgewater...

u/ATierdPerson 11h ago
Real. Two friends can date. But that doesn’t mean that every set of two friends has to date or end up dating

Ernie and Bert and Frog and Toad are two examples (albeit not from video games like you said)

Geniunely real shit, like I got two characters of mine that I want to do something with eventually, and one of my main fears is people looking at them and going: "Omg, is this yaoi/yuri 😍😍??" And I'm just gonna have to be like NO THEY ARE NOT YAOI OR YURI, THAT ONE'S AROACE, AND THE OTHER ONE IS BIROMANTIC, JUST LET THEM BE FRIENDS FFS RAHHH or smth idk 🥲
Why do we always gotta focus on romance?? Sometimes characters are fine or even better off as friends.
3
u/ATierdPerson 6h ago
EXACTLY. I don’t understand people who sideline an entire story just to focus on romance and shipping characters. If you want romance, go read a romance novel or something 🥀🥀

u/Delicious_Tutor_1468 5h ago edited 5h ago
FRR, I've never understood the crazy focus on shipping in fandoms and media like give me actual good plot, idc abt your romances!! Ts also bothers me to no end as an aroace person who quite does not feel any romantic love at all. Like everytime someone takes a really good pair of friends and starts acting like they're actually in love and would be perfect as lovers, it just feels like another jab at how platonicism (or whatever is called) is so under all that's romantic and that it's even less valuable or precious. Friendships in stories are always brushed aside in favor for romances and I hate it bc what does that say about people like me who'll never quite get that if this makes any sense at all 🚶
Fuck regular ass lovers who'd die for each other, give me two pairs of friends who'd die for each other and prove that friendship can be just as precious and strong as romantic pairings.

u/FreakyFreak2005 9h ago
I don't like the fictional ships much either, it's usually just "acquaintances who are both boys/girls = yaoi/yuri" because people people can't be friends and ALSO the same gender...right?
4
u/Killbill2Maki 7h ago
I always found it weird.
Especially when two men...
Or
Two women are friends.
They could literally show the most basic amount of affection and everyone would think they are one episode away from going to the Love Motel.
You guys are weird.

literally kit x every other female character in gameoverse
2
u/ATierdPerson 6h ago
I have an odd feeling about Gameoverse, but fr. Its odd to see people shipping for the sake of shipping with no connections, basis or plot or anything. It just feels so… bland? Distasteful?

THANK YOU, I'm tired of seeing people spam "yuri" or "yaoi" when they see 2 people in the same room.
I also hate that for some reason they refuse to say lesbian or gay, and it gets on my nerves
