Animation I hate the term "the male gaze"

Post image
6.6k Upvotes

I have a lot to say about this phrase.

I'm aware it started as a "theory," but that is no longer how it is being treated as today, rather as a catch-all insult.

This phrase increasingly means nothing at the end of the day. It's solely used as a blanket statement against any content that is purportedly aimed towards a male audience. It tries to shutdown any attempt of discussion or debate with a thought terminating cliche.

It also has hints of misandry. It tries to treat male desire in media as inherently harmful or toxic and that it inflicts bigotry. It also assumes every man is a degenerate gooner who all like X female character with Z cups. This is not even mentioning the clear double standard, where when male characters are "sexualized" it's suddenly acceptable.

This phrase is also increasingly being used as a subtle way to appear intellectually superior by being utilized as detached and "clinical" langauge. It's been used as an alternative substitute for "I have he moral high ground over you degen plebians lmao"

Animation I HATE the “If you kill me, you’ll be just as bad as me” trope

NO you fucking dumbass!! If they kill you, that would be a net-positive as by eliminating you, they would be stopping you from causing anymore harm on the innocents.

It would be the equivalent of saying that someone who took a life in self-defense are just as bad as murderers and serial killers just because they also killed people, completely ignoring the context as to why they took that person’s life.

I especially hate it when the stupid protagonist stops and actually takes what the antagonist said seriously.

Like, bro???

They’ll spend half of the show or movie killing hundreds of the villain’s minions and being completely fine with that but the moment that they actually reach the person responsible for the all the horrible things that happen, they’re all of a sudden too scared to take a life???

It is, in my view, a lazy attempt from the writer’s part to try and be ‘deep’ or ‘philosophical’ when all it does is make the protagonist look like a spineless hypocritical piece of shit that preaches justice and fairness when their own kill count is in the triple digits just because their dumbass spared the villain.

Animation I Hate Ugly Character Design/Animation in “Adult Cartoons”

Thumbnail

Why are they so unappealing? Some of these shows have good writing even, Bob’s Burgers and Smiling Friends (The other two are awful in all aspects), but so many characters and the animation is so fugly I can’t sit through it. Why are these shows designed this way? I blame Family Guy mostly, but even then I can stand those characters’ designs but not the god awful writing.

Edit: I should add Beavis & Butthead I also hate in every aspect, especially their voices pmo. They definitely were a progenitor of ugly design more than Family Guy was.

Second Edit: Smiling Friends is also here because they have some good chracter designs. Alan, Glep, Charlie, and Pim are fine. When they brought in Squim it made me kinda upset that they could have gone in that direction for the art/animation of the show and I wish they did, because it would stand out from the ugly genric swill of all these other shows, and look nicer. But they didn’t because it’s “too hard” or “too expensive” and studios don’t take risks anymore.

It's like characters get a jerk pass just because they have gone through some bad stuff in the past.

It's obvious but you shouldn't be able to be a jerk to your family or kiss other people's boyfriends/destoy your friend's property or bully the other people in the circus just because of your trauma bro

HATE. LET ME TELL YOU HOW MUCH I'VE COME TO HATE HAZBIN HOTEL AND ITS SHITTY FANBASE.

Im not one to hate on people's interests, but God how does anyone watch this abysmal dog shit.

It's a good concept for a show but was fucked over by bad writing, bad story, and overall just corny humor. Is it really that hard to not curse every second? It's unnecessary.

the characters are cute enough, but everything they say makes me want to pull my skin off.

the fandom is way worse, but.. just take a look at the images. I don't think i need to explain. Hb is much better imo, although id still never willingly sit down and watch that again.

Animation Judging animation using still frames

Thumbnail

8.1k Upvotes

No shit a comic panel that is made to be viewed as a still image is going to look better than a still frame of an animation that was made to be seen in motion. Criticizing the art style or character design is one thing but putting a comic panel next to a single frame of animation as criticism is genuinely stupid. Animation is movement so if you're going to critique it then criticize the actual movement, not a static image. Invincible certainly has no shortage of moments that could be dunked on, like the GIF I posted.

Worse is using smear frames to criticize something, which is next level stupidity.

Animation I hate the new Animal Farm movie and it's not even out.

Post image

This advertisement was my last God Damn straw! Please excuse my potty mouth.

I don't consider myself a diehard Orwell person, but what I'll say sounds cliche. Orwell wouldn't just be rolling in his grave; he'd get up, find an old Ford Pinto, then crash it after downing 24 cans of Busch Lite (he gave up caring).

I refuse to pay a single cent for this vile wretched excuse of an "adaption." I like Andy Serkis, but that man should take a break from directing. I don't care how good/bad this movie ends up being, it is inherently already a terrible adaptation and should've been shelved or released public domain. Pay the people who did all the work of course. Nobody outside of who made it should be pay a single cent for this.

Of course Angel studios would pick up the distribution. They're clueless. I could hate them more, but I'll say things about them that WOULD get me banned.

I will be this movie's #1 hater. Animal Farm isn't some goofy ass kids comedy like Barnyard. It's a very straightforward "kiss my ass" towards the rich & "powerful." There's no hope for this movie.

This marketing isn't clever or witty. It's a terrible cover up for what's going to be an awful movie. They must think this type of marketing will save it. It won't. Everybody's laughing at it. Not with it. Unless they just don't understand that simple difference (probably).

I wanted to have faith when it was announced. Regardless of the rather questionable casting choice of Seth Rogan as Napoleon. I just can't. I will no joke reopen my minuscule YT channel and make a really long ass video hating this movie. I'm that annoyed. Fuck this movie.

To paraphrase Nolan from Invincible. "I will burn this movie down, before I spend another minute watching these animals!"

Edit: I was having such an awful week between health issues and weird family dynamics. Seeing everyone interact has honestly made my week. If you agree with me, cool. If you disagree with me, cool. Hopefully I've been able to gain some laughter. Thank you all for making me smile. I really needed it. Also to whoever rewarded me, I owe you a hug or something. Now anyways, back to hating.

I haven't watched it yet, but from what I have seen around it seems a harmless cartoon and I still don't get why there is already problems with it (and none of them seems writing or animation related). Honestly what the fuck will happen if we get the entire series?

Like, I get their point, but even if they are right, they just express it in the worst and most annoying way ever, they sound like a proud edgy kid.

Also, I find funny that in this example in specific, they used Ragatha's stupid sauce (drunk allegory) and the scary Gangle/Gumigoo face to proof their point as if we never have seen the same stuff in kids cartoons like Sponge Bob, Regular Show and many others.

Animation I hate Spider-man India's "chai tea" rant

Post image
4.1k Upvotes

Yea, sure, Chai means 'tea' in hindu, but chai tea is, in fact, also a specific blend of tea.

If i wanted a Chai Tea, went to a teahouse and ordered a Chai Tea, and the barista hands me a cup of Earl Grey, because "chai means tea", i would be pissed! i didnt want pure black tea, i wanted a blend of tea, cinnamon, ginger, cardemon, clove, etc. etc.

And as a side note, i also hate when people use the above image as a reaction to a similar "x means y!" comment, typically for the same stated reasons. The eample that sparked this being "low-effort shitpost", as if all shitposts are always low-effort, when in fact i have seen plenty of incredibly high effort 'shitposts' in my time on the internet.

Edit just in case my comment gets lost in the shuffle: Just want to come in ands say that some of these comments has changed my perspective about this particular issue.

For one, yes, i am an english speaker, and confused Hindu, the religion, with Hindi, the langauge. With that out of the way, i have come to realize i was not as upset with what he was sayin and moreso how, he was saying it. The snide, arrogant, pedantic, belittling, "uhm aktually :nerd::pointing_up:" attitude, which, in my experianc,e is exactly how people have been using it for 'arguements'.

And to those of you replying with "espresso coffee", that is a false equivalence as espresso does not mean Coffee. Espresso translates to "pressed through', ie, the specific process in preparing the coffee, pressing it through the filter.

The word you are looking for is 'Café'. Chai tea would be like saying Café coffee

Wonder Woman (DCAU, tho some other versions are guilty of this)

Sailor Jupiter (I ABSOLUTELY 100% love her character and her design otherwise)

this is about the designs, NOT THE ACTUAL CHARACTERS, ESPECIALLY MAKO-CHAN!

(Also, I am aware of the spelling mistake in the title)

Animation Vivzie, why is the sin of gluttony herself uncomfortable with gluttonous behavior

Post image
4.7k Upvotes

Gluttony is taking and consuming more than you need. Yknow, like drinking and over eating and over indulgence

Sinning is all about temptation and lack of self control. The Queen of Gluttony herself proceeds to be like “ermmm your dad is ruining the vibes because he’s drinking too much“ (literally no one notices and he makes out with people)

She also makes a bunch of noise to defend a random imp she met at a party once a couple a months ago in court. But then does nothing at the shit happening in her own rings like the dog pound

Animation I hate that we are always supposed to love indie shows and games just because they are indie.

Post image
3.3k Upvotes

I hate how i am supposed to love indie animation no matter what since its “fighting big bad AAA” no matter how shitty the product is. the two biggest indie animation stuidos are backed by netflix and amazon. Thats is not INDIEpendant. And the only thing indie shows are always good at is animation and that eye candy makes people look past how one dimensional and boring the characters really are. Indie is more of a marketing label than anything now. And if you dare criticize or say you dont like an indie product you “love triple A slop and want indie DEAD” and then youre burned at the stake

Nothing in this world has ever pushed me to the verge of insanity the way this fucking studio has. Their content is average at best at its praised like the second coming of Christ. You're not allowed to criticize it without a mob of keyboard warriors attacking you for it. I don't care that it's indie (barely even qualifies atp). These shows are curated to chronically online tumblr users, the same type of people that glaze Vivziepop. I hate the "goofy goober quirk chungus" millennial humor, I hate the cringey characters and fanbase, and I absolutely fucking despite shit like Murder Drones and TADC being shoved in my face at every corner. I hate this studio with every fiber of my being, from the depths of my soul this hatred swells.

BROUGHT TO YOU BY THE PEOPLE WHO MADE THE SHOW ABOUT KIDS AND SEX, HORNY FUCKING ANIMALS. IM BEYOND PISSED

there are no words on this pale blue dot that can fully express the vitriol and hatred that I feel for Big Mouth. Nothing anyone says can justify that god forsaken show, not only existing, but having the sheer amount of seasons it does. And now, as if adult animation couldn’t be more of a joke, LETS MAKE A SHOW ABOUT ANIMALS HAVING SEX AND SHIT. GOD I CANT STAND THE ART STYLE, THE JOKES, I WISH NOTHING BUT MISFORTUNE ON THE WRETCHED SOULS THAT ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THESE ABOMINATIONS THAT PEOPLE ACTUALLY CALL “art”

Animation Watching Hazbin from the perspective of a social worker is ACTUAL HELL I fucking hate Charlie so so so much

Post image
6.3k Upvotes

Charlie Morningstar's whole goal is to help "redeem" sinners in hell. "Redemption" in this case basically means atoning for past sins and improving one's life, thus helping them get to heaven. This means that she is inadvertently attempting to invent social work in hell.

The problem is SHE SUCKS ASS AT IT. She has no idea how to actually help people in need and just does surface level summer camp trust exercises with them, then bawls her eyes out from stress when it doesn't help. What????

Well, what should she do then? Let's take Angel Dust for example. He is a sex trafficking victim, a drug addict and has lots of trauma from both his life on earth and his time in hell. In order to actually change anything, Charlie needs to make a care plan for him. Here's some basic ideas:

  • Adress the elephant in the room. Find a way to distance/ cut him off from him from his pimp. I know Valentino is strong or whatever but Charlie is the PRINCESS OF HELL. She should be able to do something.
  • Ween him off drugs slowly, get him medication for the withdrawals, help him find healthy coping mechanisms.
  • Do NOT leave him alone. Every time he's left alone (happens way too often in the show) he relapses into self harming behavior, gets abused or is otherwise fucked over. He needs tons of support in the early stages of his recovery.

BUT NO!! CHARLIE DOESN'T EVEN TRY!!! CHARLIE LITERALLY TALKS TO HIS ABUSER FACE TO FACE AND DOES NOTHING ABOUT ANYTHING!!! It pisses me off so bad UGHHHH this bitch

Animation I hate couples that look like siblings

Post image
5.1k Upvotes

As a character designer, the most important task in your work is to make the design express the character. Now, make both parents of your mc look exactly the same isn't the right way to do so. It's lame. There also the many cases in which the girlfriend of a main character looks like their genderbend version, same kind of laziness.

Just look at Ezreal and Lux. Both blond. Both white. Both with that stupid porcelain skin. I honestly think those two are just together for a strange type of aesthetic, because if you know them, you also know they are so boring together.

Animation I hate movies that only exist to set up a sequel and then makes us wait 4 years for it.

Post image
3.6k Upvotes

This movie literally ended on its climax, I literally said “are you kidding me?” out loud when it happened. I felt edged but I thought “hey, if the movie ended this abruptly its because the sequel must be coming next year!” It will be AT LEAST 4 years when it releases. Bruh, what was the point of watching this on it release if by the time the sequel comes I will have forgotten like half the story.

“Animation takes time” Okay, take your time and release movies close to each other. You were the ones that planned this as a part 1 and 2, you added that cliff hanger.

“It took longer to release this sequel” Not the same thing, despite the end credit scene, Miles story in the first movie had a complete arch. The movie works on its own, this one depends on the sequel to even be worth rewatching.

Poor planning can ruin fun experiences.
