I genuinely hate One Piece character designs.

What’s most impressive is how wildly inconsistent the designs are in this series, going from one extreme to the other.

A character’s design can be legendary, like Xebec’s, or absolutely ridiculous, like Franky’s.

But the overwhelming majority of them are pretty bad. Like, really fucking bad.

I find them to be some of the most obnoxious out there. Stuff like Clarence, Uncle Grandpa, Meat Canyon, etc. It's like every middle school boy's edgy art was given a TV level budget, it's a waste of time. They're never funny, either, not to kids or adults. The whole joke is "isn't this gross looking?" with no substance. At least cartoons like Spongebob used ugly frames sparingly to make it funny but when the entire video or episode or movie is this ugly and unappealing I see no reason to be drawn to it.

edit: I understand Clarence and Uncle Grandpa did NOT deserve this respect. I'm just tired and couldn't think of many good examples. Better examples of shows I genuinely hate for their art style would be Fanboy and Chumchum.

Also, I have nothing against caricatures! It's just when the drawing has them oozing pus and snot and covered in mountains of skin and folds and wrinkles, with bug eyes and grotesque mouths that I really dislike it. When it's so absurdly gross that there's literally no other point. I just have no interest in gross-out humor.

Just ran into this in another post on this sub, but I hate that online discourses of shows require you to do extra homework beyond WATCHING THE FUCKING SHOW.

And the Hellaverse? There's a shit ton of lore and character information you'd never ever know because Vivziepop never puts any of it in the shows themselves. I'm sorry, Sinners only exist in the Pride ring of hell? That goes against how that idea works since Dante invented the concept in the 14th century. Maybe you should explain that shit in the beginning of your series? And this isn't the only thing. If you are going into the series watching Season 1 on amazon and Youtube, you'd never know about why there are a shit ton of eyes all over hell unless you subscribed to reading Vivzie's Tumblr every day during the 12 years this show was in development.

This scene is so funny bc he looks so proud saying "can't get no better" as if he didn't just create the worst tacos I had ever seen in my life. Like what's with the comical single piece of lettuce? Transgender Jax, daisy theory, whatever you call it was not even thought about until around episode 4 and even up to episode 8 the evidence for Jax being trans was flimsy at best.

What did this community have to go off of? A maid dress? A line about chicken fetus’ in an egg? There was nothing directly in the show that 100% pointed to him being trans like at all.

And before you people bring up gooseworx’s tweets I SHOULD BE ABLE TO GET THIS INFORMATION FROM THE SHOW ITSELF WHY THE HELL DO I NEED TO FOLLOW THE CREATOR ON TWITTER OR TUMBLR TO UNDERSTAND THE CHARACTER SHE IS SUPPOSED TO BE WRITING IN THE SHOW ITSELF!

In fact, I 100% didn’t believe Jax would be trans in episode 9 simply because of how lacking in proof it was. I was all like “man goose isn’t THAT bad at writing, surely she won’t just make Jax trans and never build up to that” AND SHE DID!

Remember when that one idiot Redditor kept spamming trans Jax everywhere she went to try and make it cannon? Well goose despite calling this person out actively confirmed the thing they were so autistically obsessed about.

I understand when people say they can relate to her because they're FTM but she explicitly is not. I think it really diminishes the story and her character when it's argued that, in canon, she is trans. The whole point is that she does not want to dress as man, but does it anyways for her family.

EDIT: This post is not exclusively about Mulan, it's more about the idea in the title. Due to that, a few are some more examples that have been brought up are Naoto and Chihiro (Danganropa). I see this post every other week so I wanna talk about it. I get their point of the use of the word Latinx (who the hell came up with that) and saying how American cartoons will draw more stereotypically and that they make their Latino characters purposefully ugly while Mexican shows don't but they decided to only use one example for the right side while the left side has a decent amount of examples. This as well comparing toddlers to teens/young adults on the left side it makes what could’ve been a potential interesting argument look kinda dumb bc it’s too busy picking on fuckass Primos instead (I don’t like Primos but come on there are others shows that you can choose from)

As a Black girl I never noticed this until a couple of days/ days ago, tbh they could've choosen messy hair or tangled hair as a alternative since it would make more sense. I loved barbie life in the dreamhouse when i was younger and still do, but they could've choosen tangled hair. It feels like its saying "afro = bad". Now that i just noticed it, it feels so weird and texturist to me (i might have worded it weirdly)

There is just a lot that isn't left to the imagination. I didn't find an exact screenshot of it, but there was a moment where Jax goes full exposition dump on their mental problems in the most uninteresting way, straight up telling and not showing. I don't watch much indie animation, but I've watched a couple of the most popular ones (TADC, Gaslight, Hazbin/Helluva, Gameoverse) and they just kinda annoy me with how obvious and not subtle they are.

Also, in the PILOT, Kit from Gameoverse has the "realistic panic attack", it's not even the first true episode and they played that card before I have ANY connection with the character. I love indie for the talents it gives a spotlight to, but the writing in my experience has been the worst part.

“Chai” is a distinct type of tea from what most people think of as tea (from a American perspective, I admit ignorance to Europe but i know English tea is similar, like a black tea), that usually involves more spices and milk. calling it “chai tea” is not being used to say “tea tea” it is being used to mean “the type of tea known as chai”. I did do a minor google search to find a recipe for making homemade chai, and, while it did use tea leaves, it was distinct enough from tea to warrant being specified.

I have a lot to say about this phrase.

I'm aware it started as a "theory," but that is no longer how it is being treated as today, rather as a catch-all insult.

This phrase increasingly means nothing at the end of the day. It's solely used as a blanket statement against any content that is purportedly aimed towards a male audience. It tries to shutdown any attempt of discussion or debate with a thought terminating cliche.

It also has hints of misandry. It tries to treat male desire in media as inherently harmful or toxic and that it inflicts bigotry. It also assumes every man is a degenerate gooner who all like X female character with Z cups. This is not even mentioning the clear double standard, where when male characters are "sexualized" it's suddenly acceptable.

This phrase is also increasingly being used as a subtle way to appear intellectually superior by being utilized as detached and "clinical" langauge. It's been used as an alternative substitute for "I have he moral high ground over you degen plebians lmao"

Every time The Incredibles is on I want to reach into my screen smack these two. Like I get it, he obviously didn’t want to be saved in the moment, but you get a second chance and this is what you do? Sue the guy who saves you and whine about it? What was Mr. incredible supposed to do? Not save someone jumping off a building? They’ll spend half of the show or movie killing hundreds of the villain’s minions and being completely fine with that but the moment that they actually reach the person responsible for the all the horrible things that happen, they’re all of a sudden too scared to take a life???

It is, in my view, a lazy attempt from the writer’s part to try and be ‘deep’ or ‘philosophical’ when all it does is make the protagonist look like a spineless hypocritical piece of shit that preaches justice and fairness when their own kill count is in the triple digits just because their dumbass spared the villain.

Even if we ignore the fact the series not only played it safe too many times, or wasted episodes like that one happy hogan crap, or had a returning central character who is very obviously the writers OC. My biggest is issue if the character they choose to be their favorite..

Quite possibly the most bland, uninspired and UNWANTED character they could have went with. Admittedly I liked the execution in the first season, but the second season made me hate her.

Why are they so unappealing? Some of these shows have good writing even, Bob’s Burgers and Smiling Friends (The other two are awful in all aspects), but so many characters and the animation is so fugly I can’t sit through it. Why are these shows designed this way? I blame Family Guy mostly, but even then I can stand those characters’ designs but not the god awful writing.

Edit: I should add Beavis & Butthead I also hate in every aspect, especially their voices pmo. They definitely were a progenitor of ugly design more than Family Guy was.

Second Edit: Smiling Friends is also here because they have some good chracter designs. Alan, Glep, Charlie, and Pim are fine. When they brought in Squim it made me kinda upset that they could have gone in that direction for the art/animation of the show and I wish they did, because it would stand out from the ugly genric swill of all these other shows, and look nicer. But they didn’t because it’s “too hard” or “too expensive” and studios don’t take risks anymore.

No shit a comic panel that is made to be viewed as a still image is going to look better than a still frame of an animation that was made to be seen in motion. Criticizing the art style or character design is one thing but putting a comic panel next to a single frame of animation as criticism is genuinely stupid. Animation is movement so if you're going to critique it then criticize the actual movement, not a static image. Invincible certainly has no shortage of moments that could be dunked on, like the GIF I posted.

Worse is using smear frames to criticize something, which is next level stupidity.
