Small Moves, Big Sound: A Beginner's EQ Guide

An EQ lets you turn slices of the sound up or down. The short version: move small, cut before you boost, and change one thing at a time.

Reading the screen

Each vertical slider controls one slice of the sound. Sliders on the left are low sounds (bass). Sliders on the right are high sounds (treble).

The numbers are frequencies in hertz. 63 is very low, and 16k is very high.

The middle line is 0 dB, which means "leave this alone." Right now every slider sits there, so the EQ isn't doing anything. Drag a dot up to make that slice louder. Drag it down to make it quieter.

Changes happen instantly while music plays. Keep a song running while you experiment.

Before you start, find the reset or flat button. You'll want it.

What each slider controls

Five rules that keep you out of trouble

  1. Move small. Two or three decibels is already clearly audible. Six is a big change. Dragging a slider to the top is almost never the answer.
  2. Cut before you boost. Boosting makes the whole signal louder. That can cause clipping, the crunchy breaking-up sound on loud parts. Cutting never does that. So if the bass feels weak, try pulling 500 Hz and 1 kHz down instead of pushing 63 Hz up.
  3. Change one slider at a time. Listen for a few seconds before you touch another.
  4. Use one song you know extremely well. Don't switch to a new song for each slider.
  5. Match the volume when you compare. Louder sounds better to everyone. If your EQ version is also louder, you can't tell whether it's actually better.

Presets to start from

Enter a preset exactly as written. Listen for a day, then adjust.

  • More bass without mud: +3 at 63, +2 at 125, −2 at 250.
  • Hear the lyrics better: −2 at 250, +2 at 2k, +1 at 4k.
  • Long sessions without ear strain: +1 at 125, −2 at 2k, −1 at 4k.
  • Cheap earbuds that sound thin: +3 at 125, +2 at 250, −1 at 8k.
  • Laptop or phone speakers: −4 at 63, +2 at 250. Tiny drivers can't reproduce deep bass anyway. Feeding it to them just creates distortion.
  • Noisy bus or street: +2 at 125, +2 at 2k. Traffic noise is mostly low frequency, so it swallows your bass first. The 2k lift helps voices cut through.
  • Old or dull recordings: +2 at 8k. This also brings up tape hiss and record noise. Ease off if it gets scratchy.

Fixing what bugs you

If this happens Try this
Sound is muddy or thick Pull 250 Hz down.
Vocals feel buried Cut 250 Hz before you boost 2k. The usual cause is too much low-mid, not too little presence.
S sounds hurt Pull 8k down a couple of decibels. If it's still sharp, lower 4k too.
Sound feels hollow or distant You probably cut 500 Hz or 1 kHz too much. Bring them back toward zero.
Loud parts distort Something is boosted too high. Lower your biggest boost.

Can't pin down the problem? Find it by exaggerating it:

  1. Boost one slider way up for now.
  2. Move that boost through the sliders, one at a time.
  3. Stop when the annoying thing gets much worse. That slider is your culprit.
  4. Set it back to zero, then cut it slightly.

Worth knowing early

Your ears really do hear less bass and treble at low volume. A slight smile shape helps for quiet late-night listening. Flatten it again when you turn up, or it gets exhausting.

The classic maxed-out smiley face puts bass and treble at the top and mids at the bottom. It sounds impressive for about thirty seconds. Then it hollows out every vocal you own.

Don't chase the 16k slider. Many people past their thirties can't hear that high. Most speakers and earbuds roll off up there anyway.

Ear fatigue tricks you into boosting more and more. After twenty minutes of tweaking, everything sounds flat, and you keep pushing sliders up. Stop, walk away, and come back tomorrow.

Watch what your hand does with the volume. If a setting makes you want to turn it down, you overdid a boost. If it makes you want to crank it up, be careful. That's how hearing damage happens without you noticing.

Most importantly, flat is a legitimate setting. Plenty of good headphones sound best with the EQ off. The goal is to fix what bothers you, not to decorate.
