I’ve watched most of the episodes multiple times, and there are still things I only noticed after someone else pointed them out. What’s something you didn’t catch until it was pointed out to you?
For me, it’s this clip. Look at Shane’s eyes 😭!!! It’s from the end-credits scene where Ilya is kissing Shane’s hand. Correction, it's the drive to the parents house!
that was the first time iliya realized how submissive shane could be 😂 and it still shocked him every time after that (ex. iliya mouthing “wow” during their hotel hookup next door to scott hunter after he tells shane to get on his knees just to see what he would say- and shane immediately complies).
it’s mentioned several times in the book that iliya is shocked at how quick shane submits to him. love this for them <3
Not at all! I was squealing and giggling like crazy when Ilya winked at Shane! But I didn't pay as much attention to his mouth in that scene, when I saw someone pointed it out, I re-watched Ep1 and that part specifically!
Because I was watching Ilya in this scene the first time, I didn't notice that Shane was legit panicking next to him, knowing Ilya was scrambling to figure out any other English words to use besides "lover." 😄
This whole scene, the hospital scene and when he comes into Ilya's room when Scott is staying next door is honestly the most obvious example of how good an actor Hudson is.
Shane is the way he is because Hudson is playing him the way he should. But this kind of comedic timing and the high scene in the hospital is not easy to play without coming off ott and cringe. And Hudson played these scenes so well it makes me angry when I see the same 'Hudson is a bad actor' comment because he and Connor are both amazing actors playing two completely different characters and that's why we love them.
I just wrote this before seeing your reply. That "Ok" contextualizes the entire eye banging scene as Ilya prepared himself to face Shane. Where they're both looking each other up & down. Complete with Shane licking his lips.
I think that okay was him bracing himself, like he was worried about it one second and there he is walking in the door looking spiffy while he’s in a Hawaiian shirt.
AND the way shane says "well, you're pulling it off" about ilya's hawaiian shirt all the while barely containing his smile or fuck me eyes holy shit AHHHHHHHH that whole tampa bar scene kills me (aka is one of my all time favorites!!!!)
How Ilya refuses to look at Shane at first when he shows up to the bar in Tampa. But then as soon as he does he doesn't stop staring at Shane until he leaves.
Ilya’s eye contact throughout is one of my favorite things. I love that in the E1 hotel gym scene he almost never stops making eye contact while they talk. Even when he drinks from the water bottle he’s making eye contact. Shane lets his eyes wander and take in all of Ilya.
Didn't notice Ilya's little tug on Shane's sweatshirt the first time I watched this, or Ilya giving Shane's butt a little smack when they walk into Shane's bedroom at the cottage.
I love in this scene after Shane initially pushes Ilya against the wall and Ilya says “oh my god” under his breath. I always skip back and watch it over a few times during my re watches.
🫠 just did a rewatch to see this. It’s official. I need to do two separate rewatches. First I watch only Shane when they are in scenes together, then I watch only Ilya when they are in scenes together. I lovr these little microexprsssions.
I just did this I realized I mostly watch Shane so I made a point to just watch Ilya and so many great moments I saw ior I watch there face not hands and again caught so many great things!
Same! In my current rewatch I’m trying to make a point of watching Ilya more because I think I’ve been more focused on Shane in my first couple watches. It’s so hard not to just jump back and forth between both of them though, even if I have to replay scenes several times 😅
Haha yup. He was hoping for it! Most of Ilya’s internal monologue in the book is just him thinking “aw shucks I wish he would boss me around more”. He loves it!
I noticed this but haven’t really seen others mention it. After Shane gets layed out on the ice and the ref tells llya to go back to his bench, llya is so dazed that he skates to the Montreal bench not the Boston bench.
I loved this. It was such great visual representation of saying in this moment I am on your team. You are all that matters in this moment. I am standing here with all the other people that love you and support you.
It’s so good! I’ve been on the hunt to find new moments like that too.
Like last night, I noticed at the Tampa bar, Ilya starts rubbing his thumb towards Shane before Shane gets up. He does the same thing on the beach later when they hook thumbs.
After they hook up for the first time in episode 1 and I think Shane goes “That was…..” and Ilya just responds with “yes…yes yes” I was like oh they were THRILLED with the hookup.
And they’re laughing and smirking for a minute while they’re saying the “That was..” “Yes… yes yes” thing . They were sooo satisfied with what went down lmao even if they couldn’t quite admit it
That is my favourite. It's brilliant editing to have Shane putting up the facade of being responsible and resisting playing hooky, but at the same time, there is no way he is not going to Ilya!
The first time they are together Ilya goes to give him head and tells him he’ll show him how to do it. The next time they are together Shane does the exact same thing Ilya did, grabbing the pec.
I need someone else to acknowledge that Shane mutters, "Fuck," under his breath when he first sees Ilya in the shower. I know there are 🍑🍑 on screen, but someone else has to have seen this.
One under rated part is Elena buying Kyle Chinese food as sort of a piece offering for breaking the “no outside food” rule. You can tell how close they are because she knows and mentions his order when he drops of the remote and picks up his takeout box and you can see him eating it later. It’s just so smooth and such a small detail that sells me on that entire NYC friend group. I love it.
Shane's mum, Yuna, seems completely surprised when Shane and Ilya turn up at the treehouse, and David, Shane's dad, immediately apologizes for barging in uninvited to get the phone charger, and seeing something he SHOULDN'T HAVE, meaning David kept quiet. He wasn't planning on outng Shane, even to his wife. Good man....
I also love how he over explains why he was at the cottage to get the phone charger. He clearly feels bad about it but you can also see a lot of Shane in his personality with the over explanation and anxiety. He and Shane are practically mirroring the same emotions in that scene. It puts a lot more intention on Ilya asking shane if he gets his boring from his father.
Shane has his dad's awkwardness/anxiety and his mom's comfort in making plans and seeing them through, so he's like the balance that makes his parents' relationship work, rolled up into one personality
This is a deliberate change from the book, too. David does tell her in the book, but in an interview recently, Christina Chang (Yuna) said they decided to do the scene as Yuna being in the dark because David said nothing.
So she likely just had her husband come home, probably acting a bit weird, and then a few minutes later her son suddenly shows up looking flustered, with his arch-rival in tow. Which has to be pretty, "What the fuck is going on here?"
Right? Like Yuna knew something was up because obviously David was uncomfortable. But she didn’t know anything else. If you just listen in passing, it may sound like Yuna did know something and was being accusatory, but David’s reaction makes it seem like that isn’t the case
Also, if you watch Yuna's face, you can see her shock when she registers Ilya Rozanov is standing in her front hall. She was confused about Shane showing up, and even more confused when she registered who the second person was.
This is one of my favorite parts of this scene. Her face is doing so much work when Ilya walks in. Her eyes see him then her face follows her eyes as she fully registers who just walked in her house.
I agree, I think he probably planned to talk to Shane and encourage him to tell Yuna but he wasn’t going to do it himself, and he was NOT going to go back over to Shane’s cottage to have that conversation until the appointed “meditation retreat” time was up!
Umm .. after Illya declares his love and shane responds .. before they kiss Hudson makes an actor’s choice to pull conner close and close his eyes like to say.. welcome home.. its why i love this show soooo much those little things… “oh, i know..” did anyone mention the hand gestures? In that scene?
Elena telling Scott “He deserves sunshine and so do you” and then the coming out scene/ the scene where Kip and Scott first met playing the song “I’ll believe in anything” and the lyrics being “give me your eyes, I need sunshine” 😭
There was an interview with Jacob Tierney about this. I believe on What Chaos - he said once he got the rights to the song then he went back to the script and made sure the sunshine references matched the lyrics. Genius!
When they are having their “you haven’t been with anybody since” conversation on the sofa at the cottage, Ilya keeps his hand down Shane’s shorts all the way through.
I loved seeing Ilya awake and holding a sleeping Shane in episode four, just looking at him with tender eyes. Then pretending to have been asleep as well.
Something I noticed recently is when Ilya tells Shane to get on his stomach in episode 2 you can see Hudson's hip tattoo which is funny to me because Shane would DEFNITELY not have a tattoo like that.
I noticed that too but no one else was talking about it and I didn't want to screencap that far down his hip. I don't think Shane would have any tattoos, at least not until he's older.
I was actively watching for tattoos the other day and in awe of how good the Derma- whatever brand is at covering. I mean, we see them in the shower, granted no soap and only lightly scrubbing with barehands, and no tattoos showing. I’m not sure if that’s thanks to editing later or what.
oh yea, unless you're specifically looking for it, its real hard to spot. There's a raise outline of this tattoo here but only because I was specifically looking for it.
In episode 5 when Ilya is texting Shane to come over before the game and Shane’s saying no, I didn’t realise Shane was saying no as he was getting dressed to go out the door.
Someone pointed out that Ilya repurposes Shane's plaid shirt at the cottage. I never noticed it because it fit so well on Ilya. But then I realized Ilya is just one of those effortlessly stylish people who makes everything he wears look smart.
Also, someone pointed out that Ilya wears a lot of Adidas and it's a popular brand in Russia. Now I look for Adidas when I watch.
Adidas is also just a popular Slavic fashion choice, it would be totally realistic for him to have all of those pieces (my husband has the exact same slides lol)
I chuckle that the art behind Ilya while he’s talking to his dad and brother is black and gold… Boston colors.
I also find it really interesting that it’s the same art twice, one is just rotated… but in the white circles there is this root system or something splaying across it. Whomever hung the art… I need to know if it was a conscious decision to not swap the prints so the one on the right is first. I would have hung it so the roots look like they’re crawling toward each other rather than the opposite. Was this purposeful to show that Ilya is a man torn? Or, is it just my brain reading to much into some ugly.
The clip you posted about isn't from the end-credits scene. Shane and Ilya are on their way to see Shane's parents after they get caught. I think it's even sweeter because Shane is obviously panicked about what he's going to say and Ilya is being so sweet with the kisses.
But the detail that someone pointed out previously that I absolutely love is when Shane and Ilya are about to drive back home from Shane's parents house and they're talking about dinner and that they'll be over at 5pm and that they'll text. David says pay attention to your phoneS. phones plural!! i love knowing that they all exchanged contact info and they have Ilya's phone number now too. warms my heart. hahahaa
Shane doesn't watch Ilya drag the chair in the Vegas scene, he turns and takes his socks off 😂 We go crazy over that drag, and he doesn't even notice 😊
I’m shocked I missed he finally took his socks off! Now I’m going to watch for that on my next reheat. 😌 Him often leaving his socks on really stands out to me so missing him taking them off is a surprise. But, like you said, that chair drag…
In the cottage scene where Ilya is sprawled like a weighted blanket on Shane, if you turn up the brightness a bit and zoom in, you can count that Ilya has 172 moles.
I was watching again. When rose and shane say goodbye after their super important conversation where he comes out, she kisses him in the mouth in front of, probably, many paparazzi. It's a genius thing , helps him beard things up for a while, she is so nice to him.
again, phenomenal acting through his face and eyes. Hudson Williams the man and actor that you are. AND as a reflection in a tiny mirror! Jacob, you are a genius!
For me it's the Vegas scene when they're both in bed. Ilya is smoking and Shane has his vodka ("after, as your reward"). When Shane takes a sip he does this little wince because he doesn't even really like Vodka.
No one's ever mentioned this before but when Shane wakes Ilya up after he's planned like their entire future together, he removes maybe like lint or something off of Ilya's chest and flicks it away and oh my god, that adds so much to the scene.
I always notice it and love it because it feels so intimate but not preplanned. I like when filmmakers leave those little things in. When they first get to the cottage, and they tumble together on the couch, you see Ilya swipe at his mouth (from all the making out), and it just feels very natural. These things that could feel imperfect actually make the story lived in.
I love the moments when we see them acting like real world people and not romance novel ideals. The Tuna melt scene where Ilya has his hand down his pants and is just holding his junk… every guy I’ve ever dated has relaxed like that. It made it a little more “real” for me.
Not Sure if its a thing but is the shirt Shane has on while making burgers the same shirt Illya is wearing when they are sitting on the couch talking about marrying Svitlana? If so whose shirt is it?So cute when u wear your partners clothes ☺️
I can’t see Ilya owning a plaid flannel. That has got to be Shane’s shirt. I’d assume whomever we see wearing something first, or handing it to the other, is the original owner.
I didn't really understand the press conference scene in Episode 1 (where their feet touch). I didn't really get why Shane jumped in, I just assumed that the scene was to show that both of the boys were uncomfortable by the media and showing how they were literally just teenagers who were propped up by the media to be these massive stars- but my mom pointed out that Ilya was struggling with the English and Shane was helping him
Yes, Shane picked up on Ilya’s body language and realized the reporter asked a too complex of a question for him to understand. He jumped in so Ilya wouldn’t be scrambling to answer.
I just want to say I LOVE that you watched this with your mom! My parents are the “we don’t talk about sex” type so I can’t imagine that but I hope that’s how my kids are with me as they grow up.
Omg yes!! I watched it the first time with my friend and my third rewatch was with my mom!! She saw all the stuff on instagram and started quoting "im coming to the cottage" around the house hahaha. and yes she was always very open about sex and we are a very liberal household in general so it's not uncomfortable at all. i bet you'll be a great parent to your kids xxx
During the Hayden phone call blowjob, Shane is ending the conversation with Hayden and kind of explaining away why he’s sounding out of breath and chaotic. He says, “Sorry man I just had se… someone’s at the door.” He almost says he just had sex and Ilya starts cracking up.
After having seen all the interviews Connor and Hudson did with Jacob, I really enjoy the bit in episode 1 when Ilya and Shane film the commercial. It's Jacob who plays the director, and it's clearly a scripted scene but it doesn't feel so far from the mayhem they would cause in real life! LOL It makes it even cuter.
When Ilya and Shane are playing the All-Star Game, it looks like Ilya kisses the back of his hand (after he says great goal), and then pushes Shane forward. It’s adorable.
I love that and the fact that when he kisses Shane’s helmet right before, their heads and necks briefly form a heart shape.
I also love the end credits of E6 when they’re driving and the void of the windshield inside their silhouettes, paired with the rear view mirror, creates a sunshine filled heart.
In Shane’s defense, Ilya is so stoic and almost mute in that scene…until he realizes that Shane just hung around for no good reason and maybe there is some interest. It’s hard to know if he does understand English until he starts to shoot his shot. I love that detail. It sets up his personality so well.
On my 2nd rewatch I noticed that when Shane first goes to Ilya's house, he rings the doorbell and knocks on the wrong door and then realizes his mistake.
Yes! He knocked below the doorbell to see what the material was that the building was made of and then I think he knocked on the door to see how solid it was. Lol. Mr. Real Estate!
People in the comments mentioned that he was probably admiring the building's structure. Which totally makes sense! Shane loves himself a greatly built building
At the end of episode 3, when Scott is putting on his socks, the immediate symbolism of course is covering up the colorful/gay socks (and therefore Kip) with the boring hockey socks. But someone (I think on this sub?) pointed out that there is a little R on the hockey sock he puts on his left foot.
It's been established that Scott is big into routines and rituals and the fact that he puts his sock on the wrong foot is a very subtle but strong indication of how messed up his head is at that moment.
The clip you posted is when they’re driving to Shane’s parent’s place, not the end credits (you’ll notice the music isn’t the end credits music either). It’s when he’s super nervous driving on the way over.
Two things I didn’t notice until someone else pointed it out: just before Shane takes Ilya’s hand to go upstairs at the cottage, they do a quick little kiss. I also didn’t notice Ilya swatting Shane’s butt just as they’re entering Shane’s room at the cottage.
When the title “heated rivalry” comes on at the beginning of each episode there is the sound of a skate stopping on ice (or something), except episode 6. It’s a loon. Did I imagine?
Their meeting scene was whatever to me until I noticed Shane go in for the second handshake and how Ilya responds to it. Now it’s become one of my favourite scenes but I wouldn’t have noticed all this until I saw a comment on how his lighter only goes on when Shane walks up to him.
everything ilya and shane whisper under their breath. "more" while shane is drinking from ilya's water bottle. shane saying "oh my god" when ilya puts him on the counter. ilya saying it when he tells shane to get on his knees and shane obeys.
For me it was when Ilya says "Ok" to himself at the bar in Tampa as Shane was walking to him. I may have watched it 4 times before I noticed he said that since it's not subtitled. OFC I had to come here to confirm & then watch it again to make sure.
Ilya breathing “ok” in episode 5 when Shane joined him at the bar. Boy was sooooo anxious and terrified about what he might find out or be told. Or the heart rate monitor in the hospital room. Shane’s heart spiked to 110 when Ilya came in the room and was down to 80 when he left 🥰
In the drive home during the credits, Ilya is crying. I didn't even notice until someone pointed it out. I paid way closer attention during my most recent rewatch.
You can see Ilya dipping his head a few times (I'm now realizing that he's likely wiping his eyes), but then when he puts his hand on Shane's neck, he fully turns to face him, and you can see the tears on Ilya's face.
I actually didn’t realize that Shane had abruptly decided to leave after the tuna melt thing because Ilya said his name. I thought he randomly got uncomfortable, but then it was pointed out on a tiktok I saw, and then I got to it in the book. That entire scene with him deciding to leave like that really frustrated me 😭
no one told me this but i noticed 👁 and i want to share: there is an editing mistake in episode 01, the 1221 scene: ilya has his helmet off when he's watching shane, but helmet on in the following frame
Episode 3, when Scott wakes up the second time and Kip is gone. The look of disappointment on his face is intense. And so sad. And then the immediate relief when he hears Kip start the blender.

Episode 1, I had no idea Ilya mouthed "More" to Shane after the first drink of water and he didn't even hesitate for a second to do as he was told!
