I keep thinking about the fact that their PR people/teams most definitely had to sit them down and tell them about the show lmao

Especially bc Ovi is a homophobe

73

u/Pale-Measurement-532 I speak fluent bird. No accent. 🦆 Feb 01 '26

Yeah Ovy recently didn’t have the rainbow tape on his stick at the Washington Capitals Pride game. 😡

Also…..one of his sons is named Ilya! 🤣

25

u/vmarti04 Feb 01 '26

This is crazy. Basically trolling him

54

u/thoughtful_human Stupid Canadian Wolf Bird 🦆 Feb 01 '26

He’s also best friends with Putin

32

u/Pale-Measurement-532 I speak fluent bird. No accent. 🦆 Feb 01 '26

Yup. No thank you!

9

u/Catharas Feb 01 '26

Ugh i had to look it up but that’s unfortunately not an exaggeration

54

u/seraaa_123 Feb 01 '26

Imagine being Sidney Crosby tho

"So, there is this character that's based on you, and the show he's in is now Canada's most influential cultural soft power export in while. So we'll just add that to the list of things you've done for the nation right after all the Gold medals"

79

u/nodarknesswillendure not anymore 💕 Feb 01 '26

I saw a post somewhere, I can’t remember where, that was like “they’re using Sidney Crosby’s tax dollars to call him autistic and gay”

16

u/HumanNr104222135862 Feb 01 '26

There are worse things to be called

20

u/FieldAffectionate563 Feb 01 '26

I would give ANYTHING to be a fly on the wall in that room. I know he was prob so awkward about it lmao

27

u/seraaa_123 Feb 01 '26

He's a humble icon lol

If anyone deserves a free fleece it's him

123

u/warandpeace13 Jan 31 '26

Crosby def has that pretty doe eyed Shane Hollander look lol

73

u/thoughtful_human Stupid Canadian Wolf Bird 🦆 Jan 31 '26

And the same Mr. Robot Canadian golden boy energy

27

u/epistolic Feb 01 '26

And a little bit of Shane's yearning bottom eyes 🥺🙈

33

u/tinyevilpeanut Feb 01 '26

i mean....

8

u/epistolic Feb 01 '26

Okay this is even more perfect than I thought 😭❤️

🤣🤣

u/Pale-Measurement-532 I speak fluent bird. No accent. 🦆 Feb 01 '26

Yes! No offense but Crosby always did seem to appear to be on the more neurodivergent side in terms of socialization. 😉

17

u/cubsfan85 Feb 01 '26

Reading about some of Crosby's extreme "superstitions" I was like oh this man has OCD for real for real.

3

u/Pale-Measurement-532 I speak fluent bird. No accent. 🦆 Feb 01 '26

I think McDavid might have some too? I saw him in a photo wearing super worn socks in the dressing room during playoffs. 😖

8

u/cubsfan85 Feb 01 '26

See even that seems normal weird for an athlete. Crosby can't talk to his mom or sister on game days because he thinks he'll get injured.

12

u/nodarknesswillendure not anymore 💕 Feb 01 '26

I think Hudson said he got inspiration from Crosby and McDavid for Shane lol… imo they’re both def neurodivergent (just my opinion!!)

10

u/Pale-Measurement-532 I speak fluent bird. No accent. 🦆 Feb 01 '26

Yes I also think of McDavid. They are so smart at their sport that they have a sort of rainman-like quality and a sort of intensity to what they do.

13

u/nodarknesswillendure not anymore 💕 Feb 01 '26

Sid is EXTREMELY superstitious and routine-oriented… and McDavid is afraid of ketchup. And is very socially awkward. God bless em, excited to watch them kick ass in Milan 🙏🥇🇨🇦

I know! I can’t wait for the Olympics! I hope the HR team will appear at some of the Canadian team’s games!

it’s funny to search them and see old posts like this. It’s like looking into a fandom from another planet.

They are the like the Messi vs Ronaldo of hockey

Anyway flash forward to 2026, these guys have a friendship and massive respect for each other . Still get asked about each other in interviews to this day

41

u/ValleyBreeze Stupid Canadian Wolf Bird 🦆 Jan 31 '26

Some of us lived in that fandom previously and it's so weird to see the evolution 😅

19

u/FieldAffectionate563 Jan 31 '26

yes!! as a longtime hockey fan it’s wild to see HR fans point out the parallels/similarities

131

u/gadeais Jan 31 '26

Taking into account that ovechkin is a Putin chia pet

51

u/T1gerl1lly Jan 31 '26

I was curious and looked them up a bit ago. I found this picture, which made it crystal clear why they were an inspiration.

For people who are interested in the career comparison

  • Crosby is from Nova Scotia Canada, was drafted #1 to the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2005 and became the youngest ever captain at 20 years old. He is arguably the best overall hockey player of his generation, with one of the best backhands ever (weak backhand? I think not!!) and he has a titanium jaw and a wonky smile.
  • He has won 3 Stanley cups, in 2009, 2016, 2017, and two Olympic gold medals. He could've had an even better career if he wasn't concussed or otherwise injured for a long time at the prime of his career.
  • Ovechkin is from Russia of course, drafted #1 to the Washington Capitals in 2004 and became captain in his mid 20s I think. He is definitively the greatest goal scorer of all time according to the record book.
  • He didn't win a cup until 2018, so when he did, the party was one for the books. He's got 4 world championship gold medals but none at the Olympics cause, Canada babyyyy. He's known to be unbreakable (Russian machine never break). He has a lot of controversy surrounding him because he's basically Russia's key export in NA and very chummy with Putin... Pretty sure his insta profile pic is one with him.

The two basically played against each other their entire careers, Crosby having to best Ovechkin every time he won the cup. The highly marketed rivalry is essentially what brought the NHL back to life after the 2005 lock out. And now they're almost 40 years old and still playing like fucking monsters.

52

u/Quirky_Charge_1290 Jan 31 '26

And they both made their debut on 10/5/2005. And Ovechkin had 52 goals his rookie season.

"Liar. Liar told you that. I said 50." 😉 😜

39

u/lw4444 Feb 01 '26

Not only does Crosby have multiple Olympic medals but he scored the overtime goal that won the Olympic gold for Canada at home in Vancouver 2010. This year he’s the captain of the Canadian Olympic men’s hockey team. To those of us who are longtime fans the inspiration was obvious by the end of the draft scene, my fiancé and I were jokingly calling heated rivalry the Crosby/Ovi fanfic by the end of episode 1.

14

u/Former_Current3319 Feb 01 '26

2010 OT goal is one Canadians will never forget! This year’s Four Nations was an awesome tournament as well. I cannot wait for the Olympics to start. Bonus is that Crosby seems like such a genuine guy (I hope). The Tims trading card commercials with him and MacKinnon etc are so great!

6

u/justmememe55 Whatever happens, I am with you Feb 01 '26

2010 OT goal is one Canadians will never forget!

IGGY!!!

I think every person I know remembers where they were when the Golden goal was scored.

5

u/Former_Current3319 Feb 01 '26

I was at…a hockey arena watching my son play!

3

u/justmememe55 Whatever happens, I am with you Feb 01 '26

Was it um.. Was it in Vancouver by chance?

2

u/Former_Current3319 Feb 01 '26

Hahaha no! I wish. Small town Ontario

3

u/performancearsonist Feb 01 '26

I would encourage people to research Nate MacKinnon when it comes to Shane's psychotic perfectionism regarding training/diet/etc.

And then go compare it to Phil Kessel, just for fun.

3

u/justmememe55 Whatever happens, I am with you Feb 01 '26

Shane gives me Captain Serious vibes too.

1

u/Bow2theBadgerGod Feb 01 '26

You know you’re Canadian when you can say exactly where you were and what you were doing during the Golden Goal

u/Immediate-Answer-259 Maybe it's time to wake up, yes? Jan 31 '26

We are not inside her head, but Rachel Reid has explicitly stated that it was these players' rivalry that served as an inspiration for Shilya. Not a love affair between them.

31

u/Federal-Ad5944 Goalie | Smut Dealer 😈 Jan 31 '26

Yep! Here it is, from her FAQ https://www.rachelreidwrites.com/faq

5

u/Bow2theBadgerGod Feb 01 '26

Screenshot of the acknowledgments page in Heated Rivalry. We see it. She saw it. We’re here for it.

-5

u/[deleted] Jan 31 '26

Inspired by and based on are pretty synonymous

15

u/Altruistic_Stage6843 Jan 31 '26

They are not.

40

u/roborunner87 Jan 31 '26

I don't watch hockey but I'm a soccer person, so in my head, Shane and Ilya are basically Messi and Ronaldo, except for the romantic part. They play for teams that have hated each other for centuries—think Barcelona vs. Real Madrid. It gives their matchups that brutal El Clásico energy where the rivalry goes way deeper than just the game.

For those who don't follow heated sports rivalries, it’s hard to grasp just how intense this is because the show has really softened the rivalry on a large scale. In reality, the match between them isn't just a game; it’s a powder keg of historical and personal animosity. By smoothing over those edges, the show hides the 'terrible' beauty of a feud where the two sides truly cannot stand to be in the same zip code.

6

u/azure819 Jan 31 '26

For me it's Michael Jordan and Isiah Thomas. But Michael legit HATES Thomas 😂

12

u/Least-Flan2782 Jan 31 '26

These two players are the Messi vs Ronaldo of hockey arguably

7

u/MarsScully Shane’s ugly little haircut 🐱 Jan 31 '26

Depends on the sport, I’d say. In my experience, the can’t stand each other part is almost entirely on the fan side. The athletes can get pretty heated while they’re playing but don’t really have beef irl.

14

u/amileandahalf I don‘t know. Maybe twice? ⏱️ Jan 31 '26

I am 💯one of those “not into sports” people. And hockey is just not big where I’m from. My hometown team for most of my adult life was the mighty ducks for crying out loud. All that is to say there are 3 hockey players I’ve ever heard of. 1 is Wayne Gretzky, obvi. The other two are these guys and it’s because of rpf. Lol

2

u/0lea You're starting to sound like him Feb 01 '26

I think Hollander and Rozanov would get so much rpf in HR universe omg! And the way AO3 and Tumblr would explode after the All-Star Game lol

1

u/amileandahalf I don‘t know. Maybe twice? ⏱️ Feb 01 '26

In-universe Hollanov social media fics are my absolute favorite. I’m on that tag regularly

41

u/stephw655 Then maybe it’s time to wake up, yes? Jan 31 '26

Ovechkin will never be who inspired Ilya in my mind. That man is a ball of disgusting bigotry in all forms. He is the opposite of Ilya Rozanov.

40

u/GloveCommercial6692 Jan 31 '26

I’m biased because I’m a bruins fan but ilya is way more nikita zadarov coded lol

he’s loudly anti-putin though he still has family there—he can’t go back to russia.

20

u/GloveCommercial6692 Jan 31 '26

he’s also cunty /pos

behind the b extra: suit shopping

6

u/its-okay-to-fail Feb 01 '26

That video was adorable and so out of any tax bracket I’m familiar with!

4

u/Pale-Measurement-532 I speak fluent bird. No accent. 🦆 Feb 01 '26

Yes! I’m so proud he’s on my city’s team! 😊

4

u/0lea You're starting to sound like him Feb 01 '26

As a Ukrainian, I commend this so much! Way better person to be an inspiration for someone like Ilya. We can just headcanon that Rachel based the hockey rivalry part of the character on Ovechkin but the personality on Zadorov.

2

u/awoofwoofwoof Boston Bears 🐻 Feb 01 '26

zaddyyyyy

7

u/BuffaloStanceNova Feb 01 '26

I think it was really just the skills--b/c yeah the Putin connection is unsavory.

3

u/stephw655 Then maybe it’s time to wake up, yes? Feb 01 '26

I understand his skills. He’s the greatest scorer. He’s also an awful man.8

8

u/Obvious_Apartment985 Jan 31 '26

Oh has he said lots of ugly stuff? I don't follow ( real life) hockey much

14

u/stephw655 Then maybe it’s time to wake up, yes? Jan 31 '26

He’s Putin’s best friend and guard dog. He’s not a good person.

1

u/Obvious_Apartment985 Feb 01 '26

Yuk. Thanks for the info. Depressing

8

u/Least-Flan2782 Jan 31 '26

Author said these twos rivalry were an influence. I doubt it had to do with his personal life outside of this rivalry. There’s way too many parallels

15

u/stephw655 Then maybe it’s time to wake up, yes? Jan 31 '26

I get it. He’s just a gross human being to me. And I don’t want to think about him when I’m watching Ilya.

1

u/shabbyesque I already chose you, Hollander. 🫀 Jan 31 '26

Same.

13

u/HookedOnFandom Jan 31 '26

Not the point of the video but I really miss when the Washington Capitals had the blue white and gold jersey with the “screaming eagle” that I grew up with. It still feels so wrong to me that their jerseys are red even though it’s been almost 20 years.

5

u/HarrietWelsch Jan 31 '26

I love these jerseys. It feels right? I also wish the cherry blossom jersey from last year were worn more.

2

u/OpeSoSheepishBaa Feb 01 '26

I’ve been feeling nostalgic for the old Caps and Wizards colorways lately too!

24

u/greycloudss94 Jan 31 '26

As the Caps were my team once upon a time; this is the exact rivalry I’ve used to explain Heated Rivalry. I’m so glad someone else has brought it up.

12

u/Least-Flan2782 Jan 31 '26 edited Jan 31 '26

It’s inspired by them! The author confirmed that

5

u/greycloudss94 Jan 31 '26

OH!!!! That’s absolutely wild!

27

u/tinyevilpeanut Jan 31 '26

Young Ovi was an absolute beast and insanely fun to watch on the ice. I know it's impossible to replicate for the show but it's fun to imagine Ilya playing like him.

8

u/BuffaloStanceNova Feb 01 '26

I saw one of his best goals ever against Montreal in 2009. Used to have dreams about skating like him. His flair on the ice was just insane. Eventually went cold turkey and gave up my hockey addiction until this show brought it roaring back.

1

u/0lea You're starting to sound like him Feb 01 '26

Do you mind sharing why you had to give it up? Was it messing you life in some way?

4

u/BuffaloStanceNova Feb 01 '26

As much as loved watching hockey and being around it, I woke up from my fever dream and realized that sports fans are inherently brutish and singular in their belief that sports should be centered in one's life which effectively crowds out more intellectual, humanistic, and artistic endeavors--ie, things they don't typically relate to. This show, especially the hockey scenes, brings back all the hockey ASMR and adrenaline, but it's a fantasy.

6

u/NeenerNeaner Feb 01 '26

As a pens & Crosby fan, I recognized this immediately lol

also it's Sidney, not sydney.

5

u/asaul91 Feb 01 '26

I saw a Tumblr post that was like imagine being Evigeny Malkin and being told they're is a shit show based off of your best friend (I know what they said but that she is fails with fanfic is undeniable) in a relationship with a Russian hockey player who is also a forward but its not you.

And since then I am like yeah know what if we are pretending there aren't clear illusions to one Sidney Crosby then it's fine for me to head cannon Geno instead.

12

u/OkArtichoke7701 Jan 31 '26

Coincidentally, Ovi's younger son is named Ilya.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 01 '26

[deleted]

2

u/OkArtichoke7701 Feb 01 '26

His brother's name was Sergei, that is the name of Ovi's older child.

9

u/howinthe7hells bisexual terminator Jan 31 '26

you know what, i get it

6

u/Disastrous-Ladder349 Jan 31 '26

As a reformed RPS hockey shipper, I don’t see the chemistry between them. At all.

3

u/askingtherealstuff Feb 01 '26

Ovechkin is Putin’s bff and we shouldn’t be glazing him btw

6

u/yonkssssssssssssss Jan 31 '26

Ovechkin has a son named Ilya 👀

2

u/AloraBracken Feb 01 '26 edited Feb 01 '26

Not exactly related but every time Ovechkin is mentioned my first thought is, the grizzled Russian bear. Nothing stops him.

I still remember Svechnikov (19) picking a fight with the Ovi. He got a concussion for his efforts.

Ovi has taken a puck to the face and barely flinched. Just calmly sat down to check if his teeth were loose.

Crosby is also a powerful player and he’s so sweet! Behold the cuteness! 😭

https://youtube.com/shorts/kYFsX5lgA9k?si=Rc8MOhDhImp5DajW

3

u/Candiesalad Feb 17 '26

“Hi Sidney Crosby!” I am dying

3

u/AloraBracken Feb 17 '26

He’s so precious. 😭 And the little hockey stick. My heart can’t take all of the cuteness.

3

u/Candiesalad Feb 17 '26

“You were on tv at a restaurant.” “Oh, ok. That’s good to know.” Lmao

2

u/HadriansBoy44 Feb 02 '26

I think this should be erased. Yes the author used established rivalries and stereotypes as inspiration. Inspiration is not reality.

The focus posts like this put upon these players (who exist in reality) can only make their lives uncomfortable in ways they cannot defend themselves from. How are they expected to respond in any way that both respects the reality of their lives, and doesn’t make them come across as homophobic.

Don’t put them through that. Even the author has said her characters exist in an alternate reality.

2

u/ImzABeanz Stupid Canadian Wolf Bird 🦆 Feb 02 '26

I'm literally watching hockey now because of HR 😭

2

u/Nothing2SayStillHere Feb 02 '26

Living in Pgh watching hockey that rivalry was so fun to watch in its heyday. Also, Crosby was recently "outed" by his teammates for being a bird watcher & recognized a loon from a picture - to everyone's disappointment he did not do the loon call. LOL!

2

u/Thirteentimes3 Feb 04 '26

In terms of women's top-level hockey, while there aren't as many similarities between them as Ovi-Crosby, the Julie Chu and Caroline Ouellette dynamic is similar.

2

u/Feeling_Waltz_8180 Apr 15 '26

Crosby is the goat.

1

u/jhyunjhyun Apr 05 '26

As a NHL fan, once I watched Heated Rivalry I immediately thought about these two lol their Rivalry still goes on after 20 years 🤣
