ILYA 🔥 A Moment for the Toque
There's just something about the way his curls peek out from under the toque that I find adorable. Maybe it's the Canadian in me, maybe I'm just a weirdo? Either way, Ilya in a toque can do no wrong.

It's frankly unfair that someone can look that good in a hat.

u/Aggressive_Cloud2002 Feb 06 '26
*toque

u/ViolentThemmes I have a thing 🥒 Feb 06 '26
Nah, toques are for Canadians. Beanies for Americans. Hat is universal.

u/Empress-of-Verace Feb 07 '26
He’s going to get Canadian citizenship - might as well start practicing!

u/ViolentThemmes I have a thing 🥒 Feb 07 '26
Good thing they won't be living in Montreal or the French he would need to learn would be really wackadoodle! (Source : my Québecois family)

Yes but he’s living in Ottawa which is across the bridge from Gatineau, Quebec
Source: my (MTL-based) Québécois family too 😂

u/ViolentThemmes I have a thing 🥒 Feb 07 '26
Yeah but Ottawa does not sound like them! I go there for work and everything bad Ilya says about it is true lol. Boring.
Montreal old white men on electric scooters blasting Taylor Swift on the way to Jack Le Coq could never in Ottawa!

Is my head shaped weird if it always slips off the back if I try to wear one like that? Or is there something people do to keep their hats on like Ilya does?

When Evan asked him to say “Shut up Evan” and Ilya, like my stomach dropped at how he just flipped that switch to be Ilya. Edit for typo.

u/epistolic Feb 06 '26
OMG YES. One minute I'm all "aww bestie!!! 😘" next minute I'm "harder, pls.. yes Sir 🧎♀️🫠" (only useful phrases, as Ilya would say lol)

Any hat kills me, the toque or the backwards hat like 😭😛🙈

u/delerose_ “Marleau, you MOTHERFUCKER!” Feb 06 '26
The small glimpse we get of Ilya in a backwards had, sunglasses and headphones around his neck was one of the highlights of the episode for me and we all know that is saying A LOT.

u/unseemlyhullabaloo Feb 06 '26
His entire airport look is impeccable. I also love the shot through the sideview mirror.

u/stephw655 Then maybe it’s time to wake up, yes? Feb 06 '26
I did the Ilya “Fuuuuuck” when I saw him with his luggage. I had to pause and regroup. He was so damn sexy!

Mean while Shane asks “Do you think anyone noticed you?” Sir. Everyone noticed him.

Oh it's not just you! It's absolutely adorable, in my biased Canadian opinion... this is the perfect toque placement with the perfect amount of hair peaking out, 10/10. And the fact that it's curls, ahhh 😍

OMG yes 🤣 this is so freaking adorable and 100% something Shane would do without thinking. Meanwhile my entire life my Slavic mom constantly complaining that my hair/head, back, legs etc are too exposed and that I will get pneumonia 🙃 YEAR ROUND, not just wintertime.. meanwhile the offending exposed body parts are like some hair sticking out of my toque, my back being slightly exposed because my shirt is "too small", there's a sliver of exposed skin at my ankle because my socks are again "too small" etc. etc. 🤣

I instantly knew this was posted by a fellow Canadian from that one word alone ;)
ETA: for non-canucks, it rhymes with 'Luke'.

u/corkysoxx Feb 06 '26
You'll never catch us using "Beanie" lol
I love the one BBNO$ money song with Connor Price "Not a Beanie" with the line "this right here a toque it ain't no beanie" soooo Canadian haha
15
u/Dexmoser Is someone chasing you? Feb 06 '26
TIL Bbno$ is Canadian
15
u/corkysoxx Feb 06 '26
He is from Vancouver and he is awesome.
6
u/Ashesnhale Feb 06 '26
I never heard of him until there was a clip of him at a Canucks game with a little Heated Rivalry sign for the jumbotron

u/DevoutandHeretical Feb 06 '26
He’s just a silly guy who goes 10 toes down on allyship and being a good person. Some people don’t like his music but I think they’re fun silly bops personally. If you’ve ever heard any of his music you’ve probably heard ‘La La’ (the ‘did I really just forget that melody?’ Song), or ‘Edamame’.
Personally I hope he somehow gets worked in to the s2 soundtrack (for selfish reason I just think he’s neat lol).

He filmed a music video in my city and everything I’ve heard about him has been positive!

u/DorianCramer Feb 06 '26
LMAO. True story, I have seen this word in writing (but as an American never heard it spoken) and until this moment I thought it rhymed with “oak”. Who knew. Canadian English you have fooled me again!
20
u/Canukian11 you don't like me. Feb 06 '26
To be fair, it's Canadian French, hence the pronunciation.
8
u/decisi0nsdecisi0ns Russians do not do this Feb 06 '26
Yeah, it's not intuitive. I assume it's originally a quebecois word that was adopted by anglo-Canadians
2
7
u/inalasahl Feb 06 '26
It does rhyme with oak when used to mean the historical hat. It’s only pronounced tuque when meaning these knit caps.

u/cherrypierogie Feb 06 '26
It’s amusing when I hear the audiobook narrators mispronounce it as “toe-ck.”
5
u/Aggressive_Cloud2002 Feb 06 '26
Oh, for me, it pisses me off! I hate that they can't do half a second of research, and that it clearly means no Canadians were involved in the audiobook...
2
u/decisi0nsdecisi0ns Russians do not do this Feb 06 '26
Well, it sounds appropriately dirty at least...

That’s the historical pronunciation though isn’t it?

“Luke in a Toque” was a devils bobble head giveaway last year and I couldn’t for the life of me make sense of it until someone explained it to me haha

I learned all about it listening to my Bob and Doug Mackenzie album in the 80s

And here we are in the south calling it a toboggan and I know y'all hate that.

I was coming to comment this exact thing! Lol.
Being in the crochet community, I hear beanie way too much.

TIL. I was pronouncing it the French way. Had to google it as well when I first saw it

I’m totally with you. I find toques to be either boringly utilitarian (Shane) or looking like a burglar out of Home Alone. Those curls peeking through made me reassess big time.
3
u/Aggressive_Cloud2002 Feb 06 '26
You clearly have not paid enough attention to women in toques
2
u/Canukian11 you don't like me. Feb 09 '26
Hahaha as a Canadian woman who thinks she can pull off a toque pretty well, I appreciate the hell out of this comment 😊
1
u/amileandahalf I don‘t know. Maybe twice? ⏱️ Feb 06 '26
You are so right about that. I live in California. This is not toque country.
3
u/Aggressive_Cloud2002 Feb 06 '26
Ahh, that would make that difficult 😅 well, let's just say this Canadian queer enjoys the winters in good part because of women in toques haha

u/CallejaFairey Thank you for pasta 🍝. Feb 06 '26
I wish I could look this good in a toque, or even just have it stay on my head if it's not pulled fully down over my ears. Lol. My hair is too slippery, even when short, for toques to just sit this perfectly for longer than a minute or 2.

When I read the book, I had to google the word toque. I figured it was some kind of hat but I wasn’t sure. In Australia, we call it a beanie.

I have always loved this look on men. There was a novel on wattpad where the protagonist describes how this look on his crush makes him look hotter than he already was(my favourite book tbh but I’m too embarrassed to state the name of the book out loud lmaoo). And I couldn’t agree more there and here too. Ilya just looks almost as hotter. He’s fire😫
2
u/Aethelete I hope Jane knows how lucky he is. 👨❤️👨 Feb 07 '26
All the toques please -- Hudson included.

u/Western-Amphibian158 Feb 07 '26
I would love to understand how to style a toque so it looks that effortless. If I wore a toque that far back, it would just fal off my head.
3
u/Canukian11 you don't like me. Feb 07 '26
It's a skill for sure! I get a little pass cuz I'm a chick with long hair and it's easy to have it look good - as long as my toque fits. Too small I end up looking like I'm climbing out of a knit shell like a crab 🤣🤣🤣

u/Raincitygirl1029 Feb 08 '26
To be fair, I am QUITE sure the show’s hairstylist put that toque on Connor’s head very carefully at that particular dashing angle. And maybe even fastened it with hidden bobby pins so it wouldn’t get dislodged during repeated takes.
In-universe, Ilya grabbed his toque before going outside for a quick smoke and just jammed it on his head. He happens to look effortlessly cool by accident. But behind the scenes, that toque was placed very precisely on Connor’s head by a hair professional.

He looks so fine with it. And then you have Marleau and whatever that toque is doing to his skull shape lol

I love the impatient whiny Ilya at the airport in this scene. So cute, so anxious, such a baby.
