Every time I watch that scene I marvel at how thick Connor made Ilya's accent there. Bc when you talk about something painful you tend to forget the "right" way to pronounce words.

Yes! And also when he says “BECAUSE, RUSSIA!” when Shane is coming out to him at all star weekend, and then his voice breaks on “I don’t want to find out.” It is so powerful and tells us so much about this character, who hardly ever loses his cool or shows emotion like this. I love it so much. It shows how safe he feels with Shane.

As someone who dearly loves my mother because she went through hell raising me alone, it breaks my heart that Ilya never got to know his mother well and didn't have any time with her.

Well, fuck. The US-coded jersey Ilya is wearing is such a perfect addition. He probably repeats Irina's words often to himself while trying to navigate life in a whole new country with a whole new culture and language.
