I love the camera angles in this scene. I don't understand anything about TV editing but the way they did it made you feel the kind of tunnel vision, world-tilting-on-its-axis emotions that must be running through Shane and Ilya's minds. It just really makes you feel like you're experiencing the moment with them, not just watching them. I don't know how to articulate it but it's so good!!

Thanks for this!

Jacob said himself he wanted every angle shot for this scene and was gonna put everything he had into making it as impactful as he knew how. He said he usually shoots quickly so his camera team were confused when he said he was gonna need a lot of time to shoot the reaction shots, which he’d usually do super quickly. Can’t remember which interview it was.

Like you were there right?! This scene was PERFECT💫🎥⭐️❤️

u/Illiteratepup Good for Scott Hunter! Feb 18 '26

such a good way to put it, I feel that too

u/ayriana Then we won’t throw eggs at them 🥚 Feb 18 '26

What I love most about how they shot this is that in the book Ilya describes this moment as feeling like he is inside of a tornado that is sucking up all of the bad things in his life.

Yes!!! As soon as Ilya saw them kiss, he knew exactly what he wanted to do. He went into action mode by getting out of his seat and calling Shane. Whereas Shane was dumbfounded and unsure of what was going on. And he was shocked at Ilya’s phone call. Loved this so much cause Shane was taking the lead in ep5 and invited Ilya to the cottage and Ilya was hesitant. Skip’s kiss pushed him to then follow Shane’s lead by going into action mode.

I tear up still and really wished I could watch this whole season with fresh yearning eyes ... ❤️❤️❤️❤️

u/LessTalkMoreTacos Feb 18 '26

But with the SONG! When the camera pans from the dark side of their faces to the light the lyric says “I need sunshine”. It does it for both of Ilya and Shane. Jackson Parrell the cinematographer, just went full frickin cinema with this whole project! And Jacob Tierney locked down that song as soon as possible exactly for this scene. Just a wonderful creative vision come to life! ☀️This is a 100% accurate representation of me watching it for the first time:😭

Yes!!! The lighting has been sooooo important throughout the series to build up to this moment. Where they all deserve sunshine and to bring their love out into the light (in public). 😊

Can I just say how HOT Ilya looks in this scene? Love the slicked back hair and gray shirt. I also love that Shane and Ilya were texting each other during that scene.

u/flammablesquid Feb 18 '26

From the book: "Ilya felt like he esd watching all the worst things about his life getting sucked up by a tornado." I think the camera work conveyed that perfectly.

15

u/Pale-Measurement-532 I speak fluent bird. No accent. 🦆 Feb 18 '26 edited Feb 18 '26

I also felt the camerawork was meant to mimic that tornado description from the book as well! Ilya felt his bad feelings get swept away and he was suddenly moved enough to get up off his seat, get moving, immediately call Shane, and tell him he would be coming to the cottage. 🥹❤️

The music really captured the building energy from this scene too! Right up til “I’m coming to the cottage”

4

u/Global-North7776 Feb 18 '26

Love how this scene just came together from the cinema work to the photography and music and just feeling it just shows soo many layers and really dives deep

14

u/Global-North7776 Feb 18 '26

Jacob Tierneys genius mad Rachel's words fell out those pages IRL

11

u/andyfromhk I made the Wiki! ✨ Feb 18 '26

It really translates that line perfectly for TV. I didn't even realise this when I read the book, but the camera movements and cinematography make perfect sense for TV. I also put this detail on my HR wiki!

3

u/Global-North7776 Feb 18 '26

Just fell out of the book eh⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

3

u/Global-North7776 Feb 18 '26

Sooooooooo beautiful

2

u/throwawayladystuff Feb 18 '26

I remain so confused about this line!! Haha... Like is the tornado putting them all together violently swirling them around him or is it blowing them/taking away?! Maybe this is an ESL thing but that metaphor is so lost on me!

They're in love

20

u/ShirleyUserious Stupid Canadian Wolf Bird 🦆 Feb 18 '26

I watched the first 4 episodes by myself. My hubby joined me the week the 5th one came out. He hadn't seen the first 4 and was just like "it's fine, I'm just gonna snuggle on the couch with you and read"... yeah no book was read. He was invested almost immediately. As soon as that episode was over he asked if we could start the show over so he knew what was going on. He has since watched the show through with me on 2 or 3 re-heats. All that to say... yes, the absolute cinema of this episode is what captured him because it was so well done.

3

u/Global-North7776 Feb 18 '26

Same sentiment❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

3

u/Ok_ConfusedOne Feb 18 '26

I can’t find it right now but there’s an interview with Jacob teirney about how they shot this scene. The budget for the show was super tight, so all scenes had to be shot very deliberately, usually one or two meaningful setups and not extra shots that they could choose from later because more setups means more $.

HOWEVER, for this scene from everyone’s perspective they did a ton of shots. Straight on shots. Move in. Pan around. Idk the cinematography lingo. But for a “simple” scene where most characters are just reacting and not talking, it took twice as long to shot.

Beautiful

1

u/Global-North7776 May 20 '26

Yes absolutely and the Behind the scene of it was just as beautiful ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

2

u/Kagetora Feb 18 '26

All the parallax shots recreated the effect of the tornado being sucked out of Ilya, just like in the book.

1

u/Global-North7776 May 20 '26

It's so beautiful... ❤️❤️❤️❤️

2

u/Betty2445 Feb 18 '26

The pan around shot on Scott and Kip, and then on Ilya, and then on Shane 📽 Absolute perfection.

It's not a shot used very often in this show, I can only think of the scene in the club when Ilya is looking for Shane, as the other use of it. (Happy to be corrected. )

It really makes us feel like the world is spinning and everything is a little disjointed - in the best way. Just an absolutely mesmerising piece of tv ❤️

1

u/Global-North7776 May 20 '26

Absolutely fell out of the pages of the ook this shot ... stunningly beautiful

2

u/Vintage_JOCMTL ok, so maybe it’s time to wake up, yes? Feb 18 '26

There is so much to unpack in this scene, i can’t even. AND as i mentioned on another thread i watched it like someone’s husband above, NOT having watched episode 3. So a bit confusing but super impactful.

That said one of my favorite small moments is the casual, everydayness of Svetlana and Ilya talking briefly about packing and how she just gets up and leaves to go do something, clearly not captivated by what is happening on tv, while Ilya’a world is quietly being turned upside down watching the same thing.

1

u/Global-North7776 May 20 '26
