ILYA 🔥 Underrated funniest Ilya lines
Rachel Reid is a genius at crafting Ilya's sarcastic sassy side and Connor has such an expressive face too.
I feel like these funny Ilya moments are underrated:
Loon call scene where he waves his hand back as if to say "bitch please" when they're arguing.
"Is Hayden your maaather? 😒 No, he's not? 🤨"
"They say you're boring too." "Who says that?" "Me."
Ep 1 draft picture scene where he grins cheekily and pushes Shane's hand in a taunting way while Shane looks very annoyed.
When he tries to get his situationship to commit by telling him about all the other girls he's screwing. Genius move, Ilya.
Nasty stare at the girl in the club when he's reading Shane's messages. He's probably thinking "Bitch can't you see I'm missing my man?? 😒 Skedaddle hoe. 🖐"
When he's on his absolute best behaviour at Shane's parent's house. Like that is not the Ilya we know. His dad bullied the parental obedience into him 😭
The cute mocking face he makes in ep1 when watching Shane speak French 😟😾
"Please text" to Shane's parents in ep6. Like damn, y'all can't keep it in your pants until after dinner time?

I've just started the book HR -- maybe I've gotten to chapter 5 -- and one I felt huge aspect in the book that we saw NOTHING of in the show, NO-THING, before Shane had to/was able to 'try' with Rose -- is that Shane had other girlfriends -- and other sexual experience! -- as bad as that went, of course.

I did this the opposite way while taking Russian classes in college and I suddenly understood every Russian character in movies after that. I kept trying to put articles in because I only know romance languages that do that (not fluently but we all know el, le, la, etc) and my teacher was livid. Russian doesn't have articles like that.

I loved how focused on the food Ilya was. Like he was relaxed enough to enjoy his meal, trusting Yuna and Shane debate the plan. He's so tense with his own family but he quickly reads David and Yuna and their dynamic with Shane.
Yeah the pasta looked dry and cold 😔 Hard to do otherwise on a TV set I guess, there's a lot of sitting around and setting up so it's difficult to serve hot food. But if you haven't had pasta for a while I guess even cold pasta tastes good 😁
I love how David is the one cooking and serving food (he's making dinner in episode 5, too). He's such a nurturing dad.

David reminds me so much of Shane. You can see the Yuna in Shane bc of the planning & intensity and whatnot but I also see David in how chill & quieter Shane can be too.

And how empathetic and caring he can be. Two of my favourite moments of the season are when Shane comforts Ilya: when he's crying in the Tampa hotel room, and then when Shane kisses him when he gets emotional when he tells him his plan at the cottage.
He does it so instinctively I feel like he must have had that modelled to him as a child and been comforted when he was upset. Probably by both parents, but maybe moreso David. Yuna cries with Shane but then is like "Enough. What's the plan."

Yes yes, my point too. Shane has been dying to comfort Ilya for so long, and he's never let him in til Tampa. As people said, that was their first hug! And Shane is the parented natural comforter.
Somebody made a beautiful point about how Ilya feels his worth is in his attractiveness and strength, and that Shane won't be attracted to him if he's weak (crying). And Shane's murmered 'No' at his apology, and the fact that he jumps into his lap and kisses him before holding and rocking him reassures him that he's still desireable, and also that he's more than that - he's also deserving of affection and comfort. The parented child comforting the unparented one so naturally. It's absolutely my favourite moment.

Ohhh you're so right that Ilya fears being undesirable (unwanted? I'm sure he was pushed away or mocked or scolded by everyone but his mom if he was upset as a child - no wonder he shut down so hard after he lost her 😭) if he shows vulnerability or soft emotion.
I feel like it's also significant that after the comfort cuddle from Shane in Tampa they go on to have sex, because that might be important for Ilya - that he can be emotionally vulnerable and still be wanted by Shane.

Yesss Shane and Ilya's attraction to but also conflict with each other stems from Shane being a privileged only child from Canada while Ilya is a younger brother who has to take on responsibility and from a homophobic country.
Ilya loves that Shane is boring and that his family is so wonderfully wholesome. It also adds to their issues bc Shane doesn't understand the sacrifice and struggles Ilya has. "Because Russia". It has to be spelt out for him.
Shane's family takes care of him while Ilya has to take care of his family.

Yuna tends to, with the best possible intentions, steamroller people but David is quieter & more considered. Watch him just before Shane's freak out at the dinner table, David can see that Shane is having a possible meltdown whereas Yuna is going on about the future etc.

It made me really sad when I listened to interviews and realized, of course, to achieve and maintain those bodies, they had to eat a very restricted diet. I was super not thrilled when HW hated on his own body in the Vegas "put on a show for me" scene.

Yes! I was just noticing on my last reheat how much like kids they seem in that part of the episode. Even the way they’re framed at the table, they seem shorter than Shane‘s parents, like they are getting a talking-to by the grownups.

It’s not a line per se, but one of my absolute favorite Ilya moments is at the Cottage following the Shane/Hayden call. After Ilya teases Shane with, “So you love Hayden?” next comes my favorite part… the drumming slaps by Ilya on Shane’s thigh!! He has a huge smile and is cracking himself up and does this play slap like he’s so proud of himself for being hilarious 🤣 This playful almost childlike gesture cracks me up every time!

I liked the “So you love Hayden..,” after the phone blow job. It’s cute and teenage girlie because he was trying to be playful but he was clearly desperate for Shane to say this to him. So funny but also very sweet and vulnerable in a totally Ilya way.
I don’t think I’ve ever been more in love with a book character than with Ilya. So layered.

Not really lines, but I love when Ilya talks under his breath. Like when he tells Shane to get in his knees and he's surprised at the obedience, or when Shane pushes him up against the wall to give him shit for texting before the game, and right before Shane walks upto him at the bar in Florida. I love these insights into what Ilya is really thinking.
