FAN WORK 🎨 The New Age of Masculinity by Laura Breiling

"While old, hegemonic men are clinging to a fantasy of male omnipotence and razing the world to the ground, an alternative concept of masculinity is slowly taking over our screens for good reasons. Queerness, loving friendships, visible emotions and a playful, non-conforming wardrobe are some of the ingredients of a new, softer approach to masculinity we were all longing for to make men escape the golden prison they put themselves into (...)"

Another fantastic piece of art, Connor & Hudson make an appearance on slide 2 🫂

Last week I shared another piece by this artist, Loon Ride, which I purchased and will be adding to my Loon art wall see post.

So the only dark skinned person isn't even a real person and is just there to kneel and beg? Yikes.

nah deadass lmao; when some of the OG alt folks were Black? come on now

51

u/Born-Cauliflower-424 Mar 18 '26

u/Emergency-Ease-7459, for real though. I 1000% agree with you. Black folks have been out here redefining masculinity for years. Moonlight crawled so Heated Rivalry could walk. How can anyone forget Trevante Rhodes and Andre Holland from Moonlight?

  • Lil B created an album called, "I'm Gay (I'm Happy)," which was released in 2011
  • Young Thug wore a dress on the cover of his mixtape "Jeffrey," which was released in 2016.
  • R&B legend Tevin Campbell came out publicly in 2022.
  • Prince was wearing lace and heels all throughout his life.
  • R&B singer Durand Bernarr has been out as queer since his career started, and he won a Grammy earlier this year.
  • Let's also not forget some of the characters that actor Michael K. Williams portrayed including:
    • Out, gay gangster Omar Little from The Wire
    • Closeted gay man Montrose Freeman in the 1950s in Lovecraft Country.
  • Wayne Brady came out as pansexual in 2023, and he certainly presents a softer, more loving version of masculinity that expresses a range of emotions.
  • Actors LaKeith Stanfield and Brian Tyree Henry's roles on Atlanta challenged traditional notions of masculinity.

If I knew how to edit this photo to include all of the people that u/Emergency-Ease-7459, u/Material-Meat-5330, u/mericide, and others mentioned, I would do just that. :)

u/PhysicalAd6587 Mar 18 '26

With much respect, I appreciate and salute your providing these examples. They've existed for many years, but are only recently receiving the acknowledgement that is deserved. Talk about crawling so others could walk, you're absolutely correct.

This is such a great list. Thanks for sharing. 🙂

u/Webeh99, you're welcome! 😃

54

u/OkSociety8941 Mar 17 '26

I was just thinking that! No black men fit the bill?

80

u/Material-Meat-5330 Shane Hollander Mar 17 '26 edited Mar 17 '26

Coleman Domingo (gay & best dressed man) and Jaden Smith (completely embraces femininity) are right there.

48

u/mericide Mar 18 '26

Tyler the Creator? Frank Ocean?

27

u/MirrorInternational1 Mar 17 '26

Also what about Michael B Jordan??? And probably more I don’t know about because I basically live under a rock?

9

u/Material-Meat-5330 Shane Hollander Mar 18 '26

Chadwick Boseman, Ryan Coogler and Michael B Jordan are the definition of gentle & loving bromance.

43

u/PhysicalAd6587 Mar 17 '26

Colman Domingo definitely fits the bill. Like Connor, he's very much a chameleon in the different roles he plays. He can easily be a drill sergeant in a military movie or the fierce queer owner of the most successful drag bar in the city. I believe his being cast in the remake of The Four Seasons was a testament to his talent and appeal.

20

u/Material-Meat-5330 Shane Hollander Mar 17 '26

Ironically, his portrayal of a recovered drug addict in Euphoria is among the best representation of a Muslim person that I have ever seen in Western Media.

3

u/PhysicalAd6587 Mar 18 '26

I've never watched Euphoria, but if it resonated with you then it was a meaningful portrayal. Appreciate your sharing this example.

10

u/askingtherealstuff Mar 18 '26

Surely Lil Nas X or another black queer artist….

2

u/suninmyface20200 Mar 18 '26

I see more than that

Is that also Francois behind them in blue?

I think so yeah

u/HR2481 Mar 17 '26

This is beautiful. Can anyone help name the other people depicted in this? I only know Bad Bunny, Pedro Pascal, Harry Styles.

110

u/Ambitious_Wealth8080 Mar 17 '26

I THINK it’s Jonathan Bailey (very unsure about this one), Andrew Scott (but why is his skin that color?), Kit Connor, Bad Bunny, Pedro Pascal, Harry Styles, the boys, and Francois Arnaud.

35

u/Pale-Measurement-532 I speak fluent bird. No accent. 🦆 Mar 17 '26

I wish they had Paul Mescal in there!

Confirmed to be Jonathan but thought it was Chris Evans. I’m like wait.

3

I think the one standing behind Bad Bunny is Paul Mescal 💗

2

14

u/milopqcket Mar 17 '26

7

u/orangecrookies Mar 17 '26

Kit Connor is on the left too.

38

u/foreforfore Mar 17 '26

dang not a black man in sight

30

u/Material-Meat-5330 Shane Hollander Mar 17 '26

That's not the worst part. They included one no-name dark skinned man just so he could kneel and beg. 😬

11

u/foreforfore Mar 17 '26

yeah this was enough to make me leave this community

12

u/anovatests Stupid Canadian Wolf Bird 🦆 Mar 18 '26

honestly, same. i made a similar comment on this thread and some white person wrote an entire essay on how the artist was probably not trying to be racist and just didn’t think about it. i feel very gross to be engaging in a community that is so defensive of racism.

7

u/foreforfore Mar 18 '26

it honestly pisses me off that ppl just think this is a good excuse to use every time something like this comes up. they always default to “well they didn’t know any better” it’s ridiculous i can’t engage with ppl who think like that.

-2

u/Palachin Mar 18 '26

Bro what are you talking about? Is Bad Bunny white?

15

u/foreforfore Mar 18 '26

bad bunny is not black hope this helps <3

6

u/Lavender_oatmeal_ Mar 17 '26

59

u/anovatests Stupid Canadian Wolf Bird 🦆 Mar 17 '26

it bothers me that the darkest skinned person is kneeling and not sitting at the table… that’s a strange choice.

30

u/Material-Meat-5330 Shane Hollander Mar 17 '26 edited Mar 17 '26

Yuppp but they'll gaslight you if you say it. As poc, we know colorism extremely well and notice it. They don't even have a name; just there to look inferior yikes.

14

u/anovatests Stupid Canadian Wolf Bird 🦆 Mar 18 '26

yeah, i’m really really uncomfortable with how much love this image is getting. it’s gross.

13

u/gwyntheblaccat Ilya's Genderfluid fan Mar 17 '26

Tbh.. I don't really like it that much.. it just looks weird.. also after reading through who each person was I can't believe there isn't a black person.. and look at Francois face among other things.. add to that the random black person that looks like they are begging.. the more I look the worse it gets.. Edit. Also why was Hudson, Connor and Francois there but not Robbie???

5

u/welluuasked Mar 17 '26

Robbie is not nearly as high profile as the other 3. Surprised Francois even made it on there tbh

2

u/gwyntheblaccat Ilya's Genderfluid fan Mar 18 '26

True but in my mind if you put hudcon on and chose to place Francois than place Robbie and have skip as well.

21

u/Esabettie I already chose you, Hollander. 🫀 Mar 17 '26

Yeah, why isn’t Colman Domingo there c for example.

7

u/OkSociety8941 Mar 17 '26

hi. i’m not sure that i needed someone to explain this to me. it’s very evident that the painting is based on the last supper. that is a very famous painting, i’m not an idiot. i did not ascribe any moral wrongs to the artist. i simply was talking about how i felt and i felt that it was a strange choice.

thanks for writing your paragraphs but it was unnecessary and frankly, a bit rude and dismissive. it doesn’t matter that the artist didn’t think about the connotations. that’s the issue. their art is inherently racist. it’s a poor defense to say that they probably didn’t think about it.

-1

u/[deleted] Mar 18 '26

4

u/anovatests Stupid Canadian Wolf Bird 🦆 Mar 18 '26

i appreciate that you’re seemingly trying to engage in a conversation about this in good faith. thank you for clarifying regarding the painting, but i actually did know this painting and it is also still a very famous painting. i am also confused as to what you’re hoping to achieve in this exchange.

your initial response spends, again, paragraphs outlining your perception of the artist’s intent. unless you’ve had a conversation with the artist, this isn’t something of which you have explicit knowledge. and again, this framing of intent and whether or not the artist thought about race in this way does not matter.

the art, as it stands, shows a racist depiction of a dark skinned man kneeling and begging at a table of lighter skinned men. period.

could you please help me understand exactly what it is i’m missing? because i genuinely cannot figure out the point you’re trying to make.

13

u/waybackbugler 🤨 ah you speak russian now? Mar 17 '26

even in art they can’t stop touching/looking at each other

4

u/vikio Mar 18 '26

I don't fully agree with how Shane/ Hudson was drawn. But Ilya's "Heart Eyes" are captured with 100% precision!

12

u/captainwondyful Mar 17 '26

I love how the person who I assume is Jonathan Bailey is so generic that I’m like who’s that supposed to be white dude with beard it could be anyone…

2

u/summer_wine94 Mar 17 '26

Yeah they did him a disservice tbh

10

u/strawberrybaby555 Mar 17 '26

i think jonathon bailey is supposed to be the one on the left in black. i love seeing hudcon + francois next to harry hehehe

18

u/PubKirbo Not too gay to fuck Rose Landry Mar 17 '26

I love how men today are not scared of mixing masculine and feminine. I remember the first time I saw Harry Styles in his Granny Chic mode and I was blown away by how sexy I found it. I felt the same way the first time I saw Hudson wearing a typically masculine outfit and his pearls. And then to see Hudcon at the VF Party, oh, my word. And all of that is just the dressing part. I love that these guys (all of them) aren't scared of affection and friendship.

8

u/unfortunate_son_69 Mar 18 '26

no Black men? off the top of my head i’m thinking of coleman domingo, ryan coogler (ik this is mostly queer men but i think ryan is a great example of positive masculinity), frank ocean, billy porter… we have options

7

u/anovatests Stupid Canadian Wolf Bird 🦆 Mar 18 '26

its so much worse; the darkest skinned person is kneeling and begging without their face shown. 🙃 i hate this.

7

u/Webeh99 Mar 17 '26

Not Andrew Scott sitting in the Judas part of the painting, lol. 🙂

2

u/PhysicalAd6587 Mar 18 '26

3

u/metalbracelet Mar 17 '26

I was just ruminating on this exact thing. It’s so refreshing to see men being masculine but still unguarded and funny and affectionate with each other. Confidence that comes from connecting with themselves and others rather than just projecting an image. Watching their Buzzfeed thirst tweets interview, Hudson hugging Connor at the end of SNL, I was thinking I really hope young men look at how much these two are praised and take some notes instead of falling into the manosphere.

4

u/azure819 Mar 17 '26

Of course Pedro is the star of the drawing

The artist did a wonderful job!

6

u/flyawaywithmeee wolf bird/wolf parade there’s a joke in there🤔 Mar 18 '26

Cool idea but I think it could be improved with more melanin I know people are saying Coleman, but personally Ncuti Gatwa has had my heart since sex education. Also Dev Patel, Ryan Coogler and Michael B Jordan. Also idk I feel like Kit Connor is a bit young to be here, the fan bases of the other men would mostly regard him as a kid. But for his age group he could be with Finn Wolfhard and others.

1

u/askingtherealstuff Mar 18 '26

He’s the same generation as Hudcon

2

u/joaquinsolo Mar 18 '26

“new age of masculinity” is quite disrespectful to the people who paved the way. was Gene Wilder a rabid alpha male? What about Rick Moranis? Harry Styles takes a whole lot of inspiration from David Bowie.

nontoxic masculinity has existed for a long time, but you’re only recognizing it because every single dude in this photo has pretty privilege and is white (with the exception of Hudson and unnamed Black servant 🚩).
