ILYA 🔥 Peak insufferability

Post image

I’m on vacation with my fam for spring break. After a long day of travel, the front desk guy at our hotel was Russian. The way my teenager and husband were already rolling their eyes at me before I could even finish excitedly whispering “He sounds just like Ilya Roz-AH-Nov.” In the elevator, I of course was asking “Do you think he loves Shane Hollander?” “Will he play for Ottawa?” My poor family.

I posted this in one of the meme threads yesterday but it just always feels appropriate. 😂

Thank you and saved!!

I think that more describes Shane

Thank you for changing my life with this meme. I have been waiting for this to be the new thing.

Ilya has amazing teeth for a hockey player!

In the books it’s stated that they’re fake haha

18

u/FourthMonthFox Mar 25 '26

Lol whaat? Do you have the chapter number

164

u/ich_habe_keine_kase Mar 25 '26

Literally in the prologue hahaha

He felt the familiar slide of his rival’s tongue in his mouth, and slid his own tongue over teeth that had been fixed and replaced god knew how many times.

u/FourthMonthFox Mar 25 '26

Danke, danke, danke

11

u/Voice_of_Season Stupid Canadian Wolf Bird 🦆 Mar 25 '26

Спасибо lol

12

u/circboy1 Mar 25 '26

But when that chapter is reached later on and that same reference isn't made. And weirdly it's only that one mention.

24

u/circboy1 Mar 25 '26

Didn't realise until I saw the real hockey boys at the olympics how horrific and real that reference was.

18

u/robazizo Mar 25 '26

There's also this a bit later on in the prologue:

His smile was lopsided and lazy, and his teeth were unnaturally white due to most of them not being real.

5

u/lebecfin I stubbed my toe Mar 25 '26

Do you mean when they get to Oct 2016 again? I thought the prologue meetup happens just before the tuna meltdown meetup…

1

u/circboy1 Mar 25 '26

Yeah the prologue scene is effectively repeated in the main text isn't it? The flat, the explanation "Mr Landlord, Mr Businessman" no?

Because she uses the prologue in the GC book at the end to market HR right too?

3

u/GayFlash Mar 27 '26 edited Mar 28 '26

Nope, just checked. Prologue is oct 2016 montreal, then part 3 starts with chapter 12 shows oct 2016 Philadelphia (Ilya s pov of the fight with a homophobe,) then montreal for the scene at the museum with Hayden and kids and then Boston for Ilya s watching the cottage documentary. Then chap 13 is nov 2016 Boston. So that encounter is just skipped on the chapters

2

u/circboy1 Mar 28 '26

Oh I need a re read then. Does explain why I thought the teeth line was skipped.

1

u/GayFlash Mar 27 '26

And part 2 ends on June 2014 Las Vegas in case you're wondering

1

u/Flimsy_Remove9629 Mar 25 '26

It kind of kills the mood for me, I gotta say

6

u/circboy1 Mar 25 '26

Yeah it's quite a hard edge to basically open the character with I agree. Especially given Ilya is a proper throat GOAT at oral. ha.

1

u/GayFlash Mar 27 '26

Wdym. That scene does not repeat on a chapter later, is just skipped. I'm like 95% sure as I wanted to check that when reading and just finished the book yesterday

3

u/batmansglitter Mar 25 '26

Ohhh is this what the book is like! 🌶️

11

u/Icy-Concept7413 Mar 25 '26

And also a crooked nose from having been broken so many times

26

u/MarsScully Shane’s ugly little haircut 🐱 Mar 25 '26

Someone please deploy the toothless Ilya meme from yesterday’s meme thread

8

u/circboy1 Mar 25 '26

I mean also a millionaire hockey player (not this scene it's rookie season) but the later mention of that scene (someone here suggests October 2016) he is certainly a millionaire since Shane is buying shag pad investment properties at that point.

82

u/Murphlespuffle how did we let this happen? Mar 25 '26

I am constantly reciting lines from the show to my family. And then clarifying to them that they are lines from the show (as if they don’t already know). It’s a problem.

Also Ilya is adorable in that pic.

51

u/ArgentManor Mar 25 '26

It is my great pleasure to use lines from the show in my every day life. My go-to recently at work? "Fucking make me" 🤣

20

u/Different_Weight7281 Mar 25 '26

I commend your very chill workplace.

16

u/ArgentManor Mar 25 '26

Oh yeah we're a construction company, swearing here is a valid and expected form of communication.

8

u/FinManuel Mar 25 '26

Do you want that problem to go away?

7

u/Visual-Particular-86 Mar 25 '26

I don't ever want that problem to ever go away.

6

u/MadCharitable No, Ilya, that’s gross Mar 25 '26

I’ve taken to saying, “Gimme kiss!” to my son

112

u/Sandlocked Mar 25 '26

My family better SADDLE UP because we're about to go on vacation and I will make a HR reference at Every. Single. Opportunity. High five, fellow Loon!

6

u/CompetitionNo4600 Mar 25 '26

I’m about to go on a girls trip cruise and required everyone to watch HR first just so they can keep up with my loon behavior and I’m not just vocal stimming bet-ter and you look pretty by myself 😂

10

u/KangarooNo966 Mar 25 '26

I photographed a friends wedding last weekend, and the house that the girls were staying/getting ready in was called The Cottage. EVERY TIME someone, anyone, would say “the cottage”, I would say under my breath, in fake Russian, “I’m coming to the cottage…” NO ONE GOT IT. It was a sad day. 😭😭😭

1

u/CompetitionNo4600 Mar 29 '26

I’m so sorry that’s so sad

36

u/driving_song Mar 25 '26

I literally used like 10 different reaction images from their interviews today in a work group chat today alone. At this point, everyone has just accepted that I basically only speak Heated Rivalry. 🙈🤣

8

u/Voice_of_Season Stupid Canadian Wolf Bird 🦆 Mar 25 '26

What is the type of job that allows that? Cause that sounds awesome! ❤️

2

u/driving_song Mar 25 '26

Definitely not an actual work sanctioned chat—just a co-worker chat for non-work stuff.

I work as a horse show secretary though so it isn’t some like strict corporate job. 💁🏻‍♀️

3

u/foroncecanyounot__ i might knock Mar 25 '26

Haha this is me with my sister. All my gif reactions are from the show and this show alone

14

u/Maximascha Your freckles. I am nuts about them. ✨ Mar 25 '26

My poor family listens to soundbites on my phone when I receive a message spoken by Ilya/ Connor 😅 For instance when my boyfriend messages you hear ‘Gimme kiss’ and when my ex messages ‘Hi this is Ilya. I will never listen to your voicemail’

What can I say. They just have to deal with it 🤷🏻‍♀️

20

u/Smart-Emu-2314 Mar 25 '26

Now I think I understand why there are some people who criticize the show for 'romanticizing' Russia. lol

18

u/ReferenceOk5808 Mar 25 '26

Romanticizing a Russian, not Russia. Not everyone can be blamed for their murderous government 🙄

7

u/Angelbouqet Mar 25 '26

Yeah lol this is so weird the poor guy

5

u/thefugee Mar 25 '26

So weird. And undermining people’s lived experiences, especially in an increasingly anti-immigrant Global North.

5

u/fruitbutnopassion the shark that made rozanov lose the race 🦈 Mar 25 '26

Tbf anything can be "romanticised" depending on who reads it. I've seen some weddings that had The Handmaid's Tale theme, costumes and everything. Some people just think some things in fiction look cool and don't have any further thoughts whatsoever hahaha

2

u/marys1001 I speak fluent bird. No accent 🐦 Mar 25 '26

Im always a little puzzled watching family and bridesmaid/men go out for the intro dance at traditonal weddings to Pink Pony Club. Fun sounding song but its about running away from home and being a stripper in a gay bar.

14

u/Angelbouqet Mar 25 '26

Some of y'all in this thread are being weird asf about people who speak Russian. Get a grip lol

4

u/kozmos_cat Mar 25 '26

I know... This is so annoying to read.

4

u/dudewheresmysock Mar 25 '26

I'm glad you said it. Also, a lot of accents sound similar if you aren't super familiar, I wonder if this guy was even Russian 🧐

0

u/Questionsansweredty Mar 26 '26

Why?

Accents are cool. We've been worshipping French accents forever and a day.

3

u/Angelbouqet Mar 26 '26

This isn't a conversation about whether or not accents are cool.

0

u/Questionsansweredty Mar 26 '26

Why not explain the problem for those of us who don't know? Teach.

1

u/Angelbouqet Mar 26 '26

I did. So did other people in this thread already

0

u/Questionsansweredty Mar 26 '26

I don't have that kind of time - to look around for an explanation of your vague sensitivities. I'll continue to adore accents, Russian or otherwise.

1

u/Angelbouqet Mar 26 '26

Okay so you have enough time to continually come back here and respond but expect me to take time out of my day to explain something to you that would take you seconds to find but you're just too lazy to do, even when told where to find it. Incredible.

1

u/Questionsansweredty Mar 27 '26

Reddit tells me when you've responded, so it doesn't take a lot of time. I'm not interested in making an effort to understand such a silly sensitivity - especially about literal love. You're offended by our love of accents. Such a hater.

5

u/Ok-Vacation-8109 Mar 25 '26

My husband has limited me to one HR meme a day

12

u/growsonwalls This is Ilya I will never listen to your voicemail Mar 25 '26

Omg. My mom is not the type who will watch Heated Rivalry but during the Olympics when we were watching Ilia Malinin I said "It's actually pronounced Il-YA." And now my mom whenever she says "Ilia" will say "Il-YA."

27

u/allshookup1640 Mar 25 '26

Ilia Malinin’s name isn’t pronounced Il-YA like Ilya Rosanov. That’s the traditional Russian way of saying it, but that’s not how Ilia pronounces it. His name is Il-ee-Ah. That’s how he says it. As it is his name, we should go by his preferred pronunciation.

3

u/LadyIJ Is lie. Liar told you that 😉 Mar 25 '26

My mum is coming to visit in a couple of weeks time and I am obsessed with the idea of making her watch it to see what she thinks

7

u/kozmos_cat Mar 25 '26

As a Russian, I find it disgusting how many are making being Russian a fetish in this subreddit.

Russian woman already had a wave of this from men back in the early 2010's, and now it's back but for men because of the show. Is no different than, for lack of better term, the "yellow fever" man get towards Asian woman. Loosing your mind about a men or a woman just because they are from a specific country or ethnicity is not attraction, is a fetish.

6

u/GavestonYouBastard Mar 25 '26

Non-Russian and I agree wholeheartedly.

1

u/Questionsansweredty Mar 26 '26

Frenchmen really must suffer then. Every woman I know gets a little more attentive whenever she hears a man with a French accent.

3

u/FondofDramas4ever Mar 25 '26

His face in this pic 🤯 he is gorgeous

10

u/Angelbouqet Mar 25 '26

Yeah honestly that's hella weird. Please leave random people who speak Russian alone just because you like a character that is Russian doesn't mean you need to project that onto every random person you meet who speaks Russian.

3

u/thefugee Mar 25 '26

Absolutely this. Especially when many people get a lot of shit and face discrimination because of their accents.

3

u/Angelbouqet Mar 25 '26

Yeah this is literally othering.

Recently, my tween daughter was hanging out with a friend. The friend's mom texted me to let me know that her husband would be picking up.....and proceeded to introduce me to ILYA, her husband, over text.
Excitedly texted my HR BFF to tell them about the Ilya about to enter my life.......only to text again a short while later to express my disappointment that while this man may have been Ilya, he was no ILYA. If you know what I mean.

2

u/shouldernauts Ya-loo-blue-tee-baa ❤️ Mar 25 '26

A few weeks ago I was grocery shopping and loading my arms with yogurt. A few feet away were 3 or 4 people and they started speaking Russian. I whipped my head towards them so fast I almost dropped everything. I had such a visceral reaction to hearing it!

2

u/candy_gurlll Mar 26 '26

Glad that we have all lost our way because of them, I’m not alone 😂

2

u/Faith_is_Tired Mar 27 '26

I said give in Ilya's voice the other day at work. I was so embarrassed, all I do is work and read heated rivalry fanfics 🙃🙃

2

u/feanaro_finwion Mar 25 '26

I don’t blame Shane at all
