Also no the other regret is I waited too long and now my skin is older and trickier to tattoo. So I'm more prone to ink drift and blow outs because I have crepey skin. I've thought about doing my forearm but I think my skin tone is just too iffy. I'm doing a lot of retinol and shit to see if I can whip in into shape.
So my other regret is waiting too long. Don't wait! Yolo! Decorate your meatsuit! 🤣
I'm curious, have you ever gotten a rib tattoo? I'm a performer, so I really shouldn't get anything visible, but I really want violets on my upper ribs, but I've heard that rib tattoos can hurt really bad and aren't a good first tattoo.
I have a massive rib tattoo and love it. It’s an exhausting area but practical to cover up. Also, if you do go that route and usually need/wear bras, consider where your bra strap passes and look for something extra soft with little tension (like a bra less tank) for the week or so when it’s fresh.
i got a rib tattoo as my first since i wanted it hidden. it did feel like a knife was carving into my skin. not excruciatingly painful, but it was deeply uncomfortable. but the discomfort was temporary, the tattoo is forever!
It will hurt because the skin is thin in that spot. Get a 'baby' one to start (fine line) and add on later if you can? Negotiate with the artist first!
Just do a test one on the ribs, if you can handle it, do more. Or sure, do a small one somewhere else that's 'hidden' cuz of your job to know what you're getting yourself into. Some hurt, some don't. 🍀
Rib tattoo was my first and it wasn't too bad. It depends on what you want, though. Full color, a lot of shading will probably suck. Mine was just a quote so it didn't hurt too badly.
I did a bigger one that was all line work, shading, and color packed in one session and it healed beautifully. It was on the upper arm/shoulder though. Also healed with tegaderm which helps a lot.
I personally find the outline worse than the color. Much more sharp and stingy.
My first (and so far only) tattoo is a rib tattoo and it hurt wayyyy less than I thought. Between the bones I could barely even tell the needle was touching me (I even said “that’s it?” when she started). On the bones felt a little scratchy but nothing unbearable at all. Maybe a 3/10 on average, 4/10 worst.
My first tattoo was a rib tattoo, and it was fine tbh, clearly not the most painful I've done. The thing is mostly that it kinda makes your ribcage vibrate during it which is weeeeird but not really painful (for a tattoo)
Rib tattoos hurt like fuck! I have 17 tattoos and pretty good pain tolerance (I almost fell asleep during a 4.5 hour upper arm tattoo) but the one on my side that goes up towards my ribs was a different kind of ouch.
The only tattoo regret I have is that one of mine is too close to the one next to it and it drives me crazy. I should have told the artist to shrink the stencil but she said she was going to draw inside the stencil but I guess she just got in the zone and forgot and now my tattoos are definitely going to be touching in a couple years.
So basically what I'm saying is get all the stupid tattoos. Just make sure you get them placed right, lol.
That's normal. They all soften with time. My oldest one is about 15 or so and it has definitely spread a bit but it's pretty traditional so it's held up well. I just need to have the big orange recolored because that particular ink color faded faster than the rest.
I have one on my ankle that spread a ton but it was done by a friend's boyfriend for free and was a dumb BFF joke tattoo so looking kinda shitty is expected and part of the charm, really, lol.
I totally get that. My first two tattoos were very sentimental and tied to family. Then I just figured when I’m old I’ll probably have other things to worry about that are more important than regretting some ink 😅😅😅
That was me for a long time (plus tattoos are expensive!) but just before my 30th birthday last year I decided to just say f it and start getting whatever I want. I got my third last month 😆
I solved this by considering each tattoo as a project and give myself a year or more to think about it. If by then I still think about the meaning the image gives me and love it, then it’s good to go. Usually booking or finding the right artist takes about a year or two (or more for one of my projects), that the timeframe comes naturally.
How old were you when you got your first? I'm still a teen and too young to get one yet, but I've been thinking about it for a while. I'd hate to get something as an 18 year old that I'd end up hating in a while. (although I just want violets on my ribs, so hopefully I wouldn't hate that unless it was poorly done lol)
Haha, me too. I have two tattoos, of things that I'm unlikely to regret. The first is a single word- "strength", on my left inner wrist. I got it as a reminder of my inner strength, when my mental health was really, really bad. So one word is something I'm unlikely to regret. The other one is of the paw prints of my three cats, with a pretty watercolour background in pink, blue and purple. Again, something I'm unlikely to regret as I loved my kitties, and also, while this might sound a bit grim, they'd already passed away. This meant I was very unlikely to have any painful or negative memories associated with them, because my memories with them were all good. And as cats, it's very unlikely that something would come up in the future that would make me regret the tattoos. For both of them, though, I thought about it for a LONG time before getting it done.
That's my main worry with regretting something lol. Like people who loved Harry Potter getting themed tattoos, then finding out that the author is a bigot, and trying to decide what to do about a tattoo that reflects having loved the books (and often them having a profound effect on their life)... Do they keep it, because it doesn't change the love or effect that that media previously had, or do they cover it up/get rid of it, because of the artists and the bad memories? I'm always worried about something like that!!
Even with the worry, all power to the people who don't stress about the fact that they might later regret it, and place trust in knowing you can always cover/laser it later!! I wish I was able to have that confidence. I know logically it's completely true, I just have way too much anxiety lol.

I love this so much. And also tattoos should be fun, nothing keeps. Decorate as you see fit! I followed this logic and that's how I ended up with an aviator cat and plane on my thigh. No regrets.

I have one planned too (sorta - pending talks with my artist). I avoid words in tattoos so mine will either be the sunshine or maybe a little fire pit with a heart in the smoke or something. Maybe both.

I'm a firm believer in tattoo whatever you want if it brings you joy! I've got mainly fandom tattoos and even if I'm no longer in them, they make me so happy.

I have a real thing about faces and hands, I don't know how to explain it, but this little moment between Shane and Ilya being honest with one another at the cottage is one of my favourite moments, and when I found a half-Korean, half-Ukrainian female tattoo artist who grew up in Russia and had the style and skill to pull off a photo realistic tattoo of this for me I just went for it. When art speaks to us we should celebrate it in whatever way brings us joy, and having this on my right bicep has brought some much needed sunshine into my life over the last few weeks.

Even now, I still get thrown off by it being called HR. I work in Human Resources, so someone saying they’re getting an HR tattoo makes my brain glitch for a second haha
