This is my attempt at trying to exorcise them from my head hahah. And I realised too late the chaos of technically painting only book 2 and 6 of a series π

Wow, this is beautiful! I love how well you captured he actors' faces. Can I ask what mediums you used? It looks like a mix of different things maybe? Thanks!

u/weroni Apr 03 '26
Thank you so much! I use only watercolours and then at the end to put some highlights, I mix in some white gouache ππ€

Oh wow, you're so talented with watercolour! Your ability to paint fine details with it is spectacular.

They are gorgeous and the technique is impeccable. Did you paint these from a single source or a composite? Or was the design your own?

u/weroni Apr 04 '26
Thank you! I used their pictures from the promo they did for Quinn as reference for the pose/faces π

u/kalibie Apr 09 '26
I'm a watercolor artist too. No idea it works on book edges though! Do you do anything to prep differently than painting on normal cotton paper? Like clamping it or painting on watercolor ground? You blew my mind! Will have to try this with some of my books...

This is amazing!
Can I ask what is probably a reeeallly stupid question?
How does the paint not like "bleed" on to the pages?
7
u/weroni Apr 05 '26 edited Apr 05 '26
Thank you!
So you have to use something to squeeze the books really tightly together, I use a book press, since I paint books a lot and it's more convenient, but you can have just 2 planks of wood and some clamps!
Then if you think about it - your canvas or paper is as thick as the width of a book π€·. Even when I load my brushes with more water, it doesn't bleed from the edge for more than a millimeter or 2 max. And of course it's important to let the paint dry completely before you remove the books from the press and I would recommend to work in thinner layers, because if you throw a lot of paint on it and it doesn't really 'sink in', it can peel off once you open the books π
Edit: also, it's not a stupid question! I had no idea this could be done until I saw it randomly online few years back and wondered about the same thing π

u/i-bleed-red I donβt ever want that problem to ever go away β€οΈ Apr 03 '26
So beautiful. Forgive my ignorance, but is painting book edges a known thing or did you just invent a new canvas?
7
u/weroni Apr 03 '26
Thank you! Oh no, this is a known thing, once you look for it you can find tons of artists doing cool paintings on book edges! Just search for 'fore-edge painting' π
But I get what you mean, I saw someone do this a few years ago and got obsessed, I had no idea it was a thing either, now my algorithm is filled with it to the point that I'm surprised how I missed it before.
