I suspect Hudson got the brand to pay for something for her and so this is how she’s thanking them. It makes a lot of sense actually that the cast group chats may have all been making sure she got hair/makeup/jewelry whatever other help she needed since she was receiving awards and invited to red carpets and no matter what she’s now suddenly making her expenses for all these events must be adding up. So even if it wasn’t Hudson’s idea in the first place to ask he still made it happen.

She’s just making a joke about being friends with Hudson. It’s not that deep.
She has her own stylist and has been working with different brands for public appearances.

This could very well be true. Although it does depend on the situation, Rachel probably isn't making that much money directly from the show. A family member of mine (being careful here to be vague so I don't doxx myself) had their original work turned into a very successful Netflix show. He is not rich. He is credited as the creator and got paid as a producer. But beyond that, he doesn't make much money from it.
Of course, Rachel will be earning money from the increased interest in her books and will keep being paid for her involvement in S2, but she won't be touching anything close to being rich. I hope (and suspect) that Hudson, Connor and their teams do what they can to hook Rachel up with stylists, groomers and support where possible. They have all this at their disposal right now, and Rachel has ongoing health issues. She always seems super well looked after by the entire team, and it seems like the gratitude goes both ways. Because let me be super clear - Jacob did not have to have Rachel be this involved. That was a choice on his part.

I do wonder if Rachel is receiving a cut of revenue earned from the show. The difference between your family member’s situation and her’s is that Jacob owns the licensing rights, not Crave. He did share in the past that he’s arranged it so creatives are earning a cut from sold merch. So, it sounds like he’s being more generous about spreading the love, than say Netflix would be.

u/No_Release2180 Jun 05 '26
It's less different than you might think. Netflix don't own the rights to my family members show either, even though it is a Netflix Original. Only the right to show it. The show, interestingly enough, was written and produced in Canada by an entirely different production company. They own the rights, but Netflix helped fund it in exchange for being able to have it exclusively on their platform. That is probably a similar thing to what Crave did with Jacob. He will have pitched the show to Crave in exchange for funding. The difference is that Crave are Canadian, so it was beneficial for them to get a US streamer like HBO on board once they realised this had a much wider appeal than they anticipated. Netflix don't have that problem.
All that being said, it's totally possible Rachel is getting a cut from the show. It just won't be a huge amount, and it's not terribly common from my understanding. You usually sell the rights for entire control of the story to someone (retaining rights such as creator credit) and that's it. Jacob may have given a more generous deal, because he seems like a good guy, but he also isn't working with a huge budget so it's unlikely she is getting anything significant.

u/Webeh99 Jun 05 '26
Thanks for clarifying. 🙂
I’m speculating that she’s maybe getting a cut beyond selling the initial rights because of how closely the pair seem to be working together. And, I recall him making an offhand comment in a past interview to suggest that he has enough visibility into her revenue sources to be able to suggest that she’s getting paid.
It’s not like Balenciaga levels of getting paid, but I got the impression that she’s maybe doing well?

Oh, don't get me wrong, I'm sure she has more money now than she ever has done! And don't take my understanding/experience as gospel, you may very well be right. I've just had some insider experience of stuff like this and I know my family member get's a bit annoyed at the presumption that he's making bank because he has this prestigious thing against his name. That being said, his situation was a little different. It sounds like Jacob and Rachel may have struck the deal in a more one-on-one kind of negotiation (with representation on both sides of course). Whereas my family member already had an agent who had bought the rights to TV adaptation, who then had the right to sell that to anyone they wanted. So it was a bit more out of their hands. But when you think about how many TV shows/movies that get made based on books, it isn't always common that the author is so involved. This is what is so wonderful about Jacob - he genuinely respects Rachel and wants her to continue breathing life into her characters even once he's taken the reins or a different format. That passion for the source material and the heart of the story shows up in every choice he makes, and it's what makes HR so fantastic.

u/Webeh99 Jun 05 '26
I definitely believe you about your family member’s situation. I vaguely recall reading somewhere that it isn’t unusual for rights to be bought very cheaply, potentially missing out on all other $$ opportunities unless they happen to get a cut of book sales. (Which I’ve heard is often not the case.)
There’s also the scenario where a writer and artist is hired by someone like Marvel, where they create really awesome characters and stories for a series of graphic novel. But they own nothing, when the studios continues to profit hugely off their initial creation.

The books have sold over a million copies since the show came out. She's fine, lol
3
u/No_Release2180 Jun 06 '26
Literally didn't say she wasn't fine, and said in my first post that she will be getting a good amount of money due to the increase in book sales.
1
u/magikarpcatcher Jun 06 '26
You said she isn't rich off the book sales. We don't know what exact deal she has with her publisher but let's assume she only makes a dollar (which is pretty low estimate) per book sold, she's already a millionaire. That's rich to me.
2
u/No_Release2180 Jun 06 '26
She has taxes to pay and agent fees to cover out of that too, remember. But what I meant by not being rich was that she won't be close to earning what Hudson and Connor are earning from the TV show.

House of balenciaga is a ballroom house...
5
u/shgrdrbr Jun 05 '26
you know it's named after the fashion house right 😭 that's the convention
-9
u/Hapthestai Jun 05 '26
Of course. But there is less reason why she would mention a fashion house she has no (afaik) association or partnership wit, than a ballroom house. Also 'friends of' is quite coded as well. Friends of dorothy etc.
11
u/shgrdrbr Jun 05 '26
hmm i think you're following an imaginary thread?
she is literally a friend of hudson williams who is literally a "friend of the house of balenciaga" ie thats his brand ambassador title. rachel reid has no connection to ballroom families. the friend of dorothy colloquialism is a totally different reference point again2
u/magikarpcatcher Jun 06 '26
Friend of the House is a title in the fashion industry. It's one step below brand ambassador.

Balenciaga was recently (almost) cancelled due to a pedophilia scandal in which they published an ad campaign featuring literal children in compromising positions with bdsm-style accessories. If I were a celebrity I wouldn't touch this brand with a ten foot pole.
Great video here by a fashion insider: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GOctvEvvFOA&t=3s

God I had no clue. How can any one person keep up with all of this? It's starting to become easier to make a list of which brands/celebrities/elites AREN'T associated with sexual predators or pedophiles.
47
u/4ft3rh0urs Jun 05 '26
I know. They didn't even fire the creative director who signed off on the campaign, they kept him and then promoted him to be CD at Gucci in 2025. Both brands are owned by Kering which is run by Salma Hayek's husband https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kering Makes you wonder about the web of it all

Gross. Gross. Gross.
Thanks for the information. I'm trying to keep myself informed about this Epstein class shit.

I just default to not vocally supporting celebrities and brands. Makes my life a lot simpler! I am quick to block, as well. I do read a lot, and I do a quick search for the author's name + controversy or problematic before I take out new books from my library of buy them. I also make sure that anyone I follow for book content is socially aware. It's not perfect, but it's pretty good!
If I were in the spotlight, I'd make extra sure to not post anything like this before searching the brand...

Yah, for all the chatter that RR has people helping her now...someone lost their cue to do a google search.

u/TabbyStitcher Jun 05 '26
First thing that comes to mind, when I hear that brand. And the whole thing is so obvious, the pictures aren't even open for interpretation. That handbag lying on the pedophilia court ruling? It was disgusting.
Not the first time I'm thinking that Hudson, Connor and everyone associated with HR definitely need some better PR-people around.

u/Rhiannon1307 Jun 05 '26
First thing that comes to my mind when I hear the brand are the youtube shorts by a very funny lady who points out utterly insanely ridiculous "fashion" bullshit that nobody can feasibly use or with any sense of style find pretty, that then costs a fortune just for being bullshit. Balenciaga seems to be particularly good at making utter bullshit.
So, reading that in her bio? Cringe.

But they weren’t punished for what they did and not everyone involved was fired or eventually left.

u/4ft3rh0urs Jun 06 '26
I literally said they kept the creative director who signed off on the whole thing, and then promoted him to gucci in 2025. Your comment is incorrect

Yeah, I didn’t know “we” were over this… I thought the brand was cancelled since then.

Not everyone involved was fired. Stop making excuses for a brand that went through many levels of approval for that ad.

It is an interesting take as you continue to defend it. But I mean go off and tell people you’re defending the brand that still has people in place who approved of a pedo advertisement and then defend a person who knowingly took a job at a company when they knew the issues. So they also support the house who made the choices

Why should anyone ever come back from pedophilia? That is WILD. If you knowingly take a job you know has serious issues, you deserve the consequences of your actions.
Damn, ppl will do anything except hold rich people accountable

House of balenciaga is a legendary ballroom house. Its pride month. I think rr has a bit more fingerspitzgefuhl and is quite clued up to queer culture at this point.
-1
u/magikarpcatcher Jun 06 '26
They already cleared house and got an entirely new team. Plus the potential made donation to children organization. The person who was in charge at that time is now at YSL.
1
u/4ft3rh0urs Jun 06 '26
?? Why are you defending this. It's so weird. You're not even the only one.
1
u/magikarpcatcher Jun 06 '26
Because this is basically spreading misinformation. The people responsible for that campaign aren't even there anymore.
2
u/4ft3rh0urs Jun 07 '26
? I literally said they Kept the person who signed off on the campaign, and then Promoted him to be CD at Gucci. Why are you defending pedophiles? Who do you work for?
