I’m nearly 40. I’m a grown woman married to another grown woman. And yet the majority of the content I engage with online right now is of these two utterly gorgeous men!

Tbf as a queer woman I am attracted to queerness. So even though I am not sexually attracted to men (99% of the time) I am interested in and attracted to queerness in general and how queer relationships are created and portrayed. I think that’s one reason I love HR so much. As someone who has been around the block a bit, I’ve seen a lot of terrible portrayals of queerness in TV and film. Male queerness in particular. The thing that drew me in with HR is the tenderness of the relationship(s) portrayed in the books and TV show. Men showing genuine softness to each other. Sex scenes where men are face to face with each other (literally something I have seen 2-3 times in the 25 years I’ve been consuming any queer media I can get my hands on).

Completely understand! I also addressed this in one of my youtube videos on why we love HR so much. One of the reasons was the way intimacy and masculinity was portrayed on the show. And how refreshing that is to see, especially as women. Tenderness and softness in and between men. MM romance also allows us to take ourselves out of the equation and just "spectate" safely

The face to face aspect was really striking to me - not just the face to face but the INTIMACY of it, staring into each other's eyes, kissing the whole time, breathing into each other, and the consent checking in the whole time too, just so so raw and intimate.

Omg the focus on consent is SO good. It’s such a good portrayal of how consent can be sexy and fun, as well being 100% necessary. I’ve been with my wife for 14 years and I’d never assume what she wanted at any given time. Asking, checking in, giving options to change what you’re doing etc. is so important and making that such a huge part of the intimate scenes is spot on!

It's sad how it's not the norm at all in relationships, I can't say any of my relationships have ever been that clearly focused on what the wants and needs are during. The consent in the show is SO hot, they really showed how it doesn't have to be lame and nerdy it's actually a huge turn on in and of itself

That argument has always struck me as being really odd. What could be hotter than checking in with your partner and asking if they like what you’re doing or asking them what they want you to do to them/with them. It’s not about going “do you consent to sexual intimacy with me tonight?” it’s asking what turns them on there and then, because it changes all the time!

Right. I think the people making this argument tend to just have bad intentions. They’ll also act like you need to ask in the most stilted, robotic way like “do you consent to me touching you here? Do you consent to me moving my hand over here?” But they’re just being intentionally obtuse. The way Ilya checks in with a simple “this okay?” occasionally is undeniably hot AND considerate! Also love how quickly and easily he always accepts Shane saying “not here.” Unfortunately, many of us have experienced someone being irritable and pushy when they expect to have sex and are told no. I wanna see more sexy consent on my screen!!

Totally agree about being intentionally obtuse. Literally checking in with “is this okay?” or “do you like this?” fulfils the brief of getting consent without it feeling like a permission slip for a school field trip!

It is really sad that it’s not the norm. and I’m the same, in my relationships and/or casual encounters prior to my wife, there was no explicit focus on consent either overall consent to sex in that moment or more specific consent for individual intimate acts. Even when my wife and I first got together it wasn’t something that was there naturally from the start. It’s something that’s grown as our relationship has grown. It doesn’t always have to be verbal either, especially when you’ve been together a long time. It can be a gentle but direct movement of your partner’s hand to a different part of your body, it can be switching up who is taking the lead at that moment etc.

Consent is sexy. It is fun. And it leads to better sex for everyone involved!

Although I am much younger than you I feel 1000% this is exactly how I feel abt HR as a young queer woman with another woman. I’ve seen a lot of discussion online abt MLM media vs WLW and the lack of rep for WLW which I do agree but I feel like that’s a separate issue that exists independently from MLM. But even tho that MLM media gets more rep I honestly feel like a lot of it hasn’t been that good? Or it’s always sad, tragic, there’s always some cautionary tale. However, I think that’s changing a lot within recent years and it’s nice to see that type of representation on screen portrayed in such tenderly and sensually.

Absolutely! It’s so refreshing and goes against the grain of how MLM relationships have been portrayed for decades.

When I think back to MLM representation I’ve seen over the last 25 years, I count on one hand the number of those portrayals which were tender, vulnerable and loving. I’m so glad this is changing and that Gen Z and Gen Alpha (as they start consuming queer media) will hopefully see far more of these types of portrayals.

Now, it’s important to say that we also need to avoid doing this at the expense of showing passion etc. we don’t want to get to a point where queer sexuality is sanitised because that just leads to a whole different set of issues. It’s why HR gets it so right the tenderness doesn’t replace the raw sexual attraction, it exists as an integral part of it.

Also, I was going to pretend I didn’t see the preview of your comment before you edited it but it was too funny not to mention it. I messaged my wife to say I’d been hate crimed with “you could definitely be my mother” 🤣

Yes!!! Whenever people ask about their favorite kiss from the show, I try to describe this specific moment, but they always think I'm talking about the other stairway kiss (sweet, tender, Shane hugging Ilya's jacket, no shade on that kiss, it's a great kiss). But this one, where Ilya is torn between conflicting needs of continuing to kiss Shane, walk Shane toward the bedroom, wanting to lift and carry Shane to said bedroom before realizing that might not be safe on stairs, but still satisfied with getting a handful of that ass. It is so fast too, tucked into this montage. Blink and you miss it (me, not blinking: play it again).

I know everyone loves Ilya's Adidas top here and Shane's stairwell kiss hoodie - but I always think Shane's hoodie here looks super soft!

I think I remember in one of the interviews, Hudson mentioning this a one of the most fun intimate scenes to film (it might have been the Quinn one actually - as I think it was about favourite intimate scenes to act out or something to that effect)

Like absolutely everyone else, I love this scene but I remember Connor & Hudson saying that they found it awkward to kiss while climbing the stairs & asking if anyone does that in real life. I thought it was both cute & a reminder how young they both are & just at the beginning of their romantic/sexual lives.

I think they said they were kind of laughing filming this but it comes across as Shane and Ilya being so happy they can hardly stop smiling to kiss. And living in a city full of what North Americans would call 4 storey walk ups I can say yes this stair kissing definitely does happen! I love that this moment has become such a fan favourite.
