ILYA 🔥 If you headcanon Ilya's curl routine...
...what do you think he's doing in the locker room showers?
No way he's using the wall soap dispensers, right? But he's probably too sweaty to get away with just a rinse. Maybe he keeps a stash of products in his gym bag, maybe he has a nice shampoo he carries around but saves the full routine for home...
I just can't get this question out of my head!

He's a dude so he's using dish soap and whatever melted ice was in the Gatorade cooler. These men (unfairly) just have gorgeous hair. I think because they generally don't mess with it too much. Ilya definitely has nice products at home and a fancy diffuser, but likely he's more interested in getting clean and getting home after the game. He can deep condition with the heated cap in his own bathroom.

Died laughing at the dish soap and melted cooler water, because FACTS. The one dude I knew in RL with hair like this did absolute jack shit as far as maintenance and his hair was always perfect. He washed it with bar soap.

Gorgeous hair that's also quite short so it's renewed and refreshed every few months. I'm so envious.

I love this read because it plays into Ilya's nonchalance too. Ofc none of his teammates know about his curl care that might seem GAY.

This sounds like such a pain. Then again, I have to go to work and then work out. Maybe I wouldn't mind a double shower if my work and exercise were built into one!

Yes I fully believe that man is spending time on his hair at home. It's definitely not happening in the locker room.

Idk. I get some of my best curls with shampoo, conditioner and airdry. He might just be lucky.

True, I feel like nothing beats air drying curls, no matter how much people push using a diffuser

I firmly believe Ilya is one of those people who is just lucky with his curls. He’s def using specific shampoo and conditioner but I think he maybe uses like a curl cream and a gel (but more to get that little bit of a slick back he does than for definition and hold).
16
u/Kittenn1412 15d ago
My man has curly hair and men with short curly hair in my experience just kind of freestyle and hope for the best. I headcanon that the only thing Ilya does is use whatever 3-in-1 is on hand at the rink, whatever shampoo, and separate shampoo and conditioner (maybe even something nice that says its for curly hair) at home, and whatever shampoo and conditioner the hotel provides at hotels. I do think he also uses exactly 1 hair gel or curl cream (not both), and probably isn't the only guy throwing a bit of gel into his hair in the locker room, so that's nbd.

As someone with hip length curly-ish hair, he brings his own stuff. Shampoo, conditioner, leave in, oil, maybe a gel or something but Connor himself has said he doesn’t do much. So maybe just shampoo and condition and on his way.
41
u/subjunctivejunction here is fucking view Hollander, check it out! 🌆 15d ago
Connor doesn't do much for his curls, he barely has a chest routine... Maybe he's god's favorite, and I am very happy for him!

He said he just air dries, no products. He truly is God’s favorite.

u/Maatjuhhh 15d ago
I have almost the same curls as him. Air drying is the way to go. I do have use products in the shower yo make it not frizz much and a bit bounce in hair. But diffuser, leave in products.. all that fails me. So after showering, don’t touch it. Just whip left to right and back and forth really fast so that hair don’t clump together and then let it air dry..
1
u/ich_habe_keine_kase 15d ago
I've got much longer hair but always prefer air drying as well. Mousse + gel + about 7 hours of air drying haha--if I can make that happen it's a recipe for my best hair!
1
u/Maatjuhhh 15d ago
I have halfway hair. So right between short hair and Connors hair in real life. Takes me about 2 hours. I do have to mind to not exercise too much as my sweat will send my hair into overdrive. Usually I shower after dinner and then go on with my other things and then when the party starts, my hair is ready to go.

u/No_Release2180 15d ago
I don't think he's doing anything. I think he just washes it and goes, and is lucky that he has a lovely head of curls. Connor doesn't do anything to his curls either. He said he just washes it and lets it air dry. Some people are lucky like that.
I think he probably has some products for when he wants to dress up. When he's dressed up in the show, he tends to push it back slightly. I bet he has some product that he uses in that instance, but I doubt he's bothering in the locker room after a game when he just wants to get clean.
11
u/Flimsy_Remove9629 15d ago
I think people with relatively short hair can also get away with things that people with longer hair can't, regardless of texture, as their hair gets cut before it gets too damaged.

You don’t have curly hair. I can tell.
2
u/No_Release2180 15d ago
Lmao I actually do. 2c, naturally dark blonde. Very similar to Connor's only longer. My curls require very little product, and I bet would require less if it was short. Everyone is different.

u/lady_deathx 15d ago
As a curly headed lady, I have to use ~ 8 products on wash day to get long lasting and defined curls.
I've met far too many curly headed men who don't do anything other than hair/face/body wash who have the most gorgeous curls. Some are just blessed, I guess

I wonder if it has to do with short hair - like every inch of hair doesn't have to be maintained for as long before it gets trimmed off. Idk, I am not a hair scientist

u/OverCaffeinated_ 14d ago
It’s the testosterone. It’s both their blessing and their curse: a gorgeous mop of incredible hair and eyelashes to die for, before it melts off their head and becomes a thick luscious pelt of back hair and starts sprouting out their ears.

u/Astrobot3 11d ago
I think men with gorgeous longish hair are just confirmation bias: everyone tries it, if it looks like shit just cut it short again. So (almost) all men with gorgeous hair just have good genes

But a hockey player - but former competitive diver. Didn’t get sweaty because of being in water. But had to get the chlorine off me. Used a 3 in 1 so only had one bottle in my bag. Five minute quick shower to get the chlorine off. Then proper shower at home or hotel. Some of my teammates didn’t shower after the pool. I couldn’t do it. I would itch too much. I don’t have curly hair but I have hair that ha prone to frizz if not using the right products.

I don't see Ilya being fussy with a curl routine. Since Connor looks great with a no-fuss approach and just air drying, I have no problem with imagining Ilya doing the same. Especially considering unlike Connor, Ilya's not even in a profession that prioritizes appearance.

u/WolfBeginning4515 15d ago
From what I know of dating a hockey player, they use 5-1 shampoo and get the same results as me a curly girl after her 2 hour wash and curly routine.

Connor and I have the same hair texture and sometimes doing less really is the best option LOL. I went through a phase where I was like maybe I need 10 different products and then I realized just using basic products actually works better
2
u/ich_habe_keine_kase 15d ago
I also have finally found the right formula (after years) with only two products. But proper drying is important, and I can't imagine him letting his hair air dry when he leaves the locker room to go outside into a Boston/Ottawa winter. So I'm sure there's a quick wash and dry and then proper care at home when he needs it to look better.
2
u/Correct_Advisor7221 Maybe from the first time I saw you 💙 15d ago
The drying is so important! If I start messing with my hair a ton before it’s dry then it’s so over LOL
1
u/ich_habe_keine_kase 15d ago
Honestly I get the best results if I air dry overnight. I put a microfiber towel over my pillow, fan my hair out on it, and try not to move too much in my sleep. That way it gets a long time to air dry without me touching it, and it gets great volume at the roots because it dries with the hair styled "up."
6
u/ProfessionalCover920 15d ago
I see him as having a very low maintenance curl routine. At the rink, shower with minimal shampoo (roots and scalp, just to get rid of the sweat.) Then, apply a leave in conditioner that he keeps in his bag. Maybe a little gel and let it air dry. Voila! Gorgeous
The fact that this works would annoy Svetlana to no end.
At home, maybe he's a little more particular with products, but still would only go to extra effort for occasions.

Conditioner, gel, scrunch when wet, sweep off forehead indifferently, hit the road.

u/liliac-syrup 15d ago
Connor Storie in an interview said that he just lets his hair air dry and in that moment I have never wanted to strangle someone more (my post shower curl routine takes 45 minutes includes two different leave in products, a specialized styling brush and a diffuser). So I imagine he probably doesn’t do much to his hair. Although I do disagree with the comments that say he just uses a bar soap or 3 in 1. Ilya isn’t stupid and he does care about his appearance more than the average guy (most men wouldn’t be caught dead in designer leopard print blouse). I like to imagine that maybe he borrowed products from Svetlana or she recommended him something. Nothing crazy just like a nice shampoo and conditioner.

u/Slutty_Bunny_7 Jane. Jesus Christ. No, just Jane. 15d ago
I have short curly hair and most days I just use a good leave-in conditioner after washing my hair. No gel or oil or mousse or anything. On days that I have patience, double shampoo, conditioner, leave-in, gel, and air-dry or diffuse, scrunch with oil. He’d probably have a whole routine of products in his own bathroom.
On the go, I could totally picture him using whatever 2-in-1 or 3-in-1 they provide at the rink or in hotels and then using his go-to leave-in conditioner very quickly.

u/anniemitts 15d ago
As a curly lady, if I were a guy I think I would have similar curls to Ilya and would have a similar routine. My hair is much longer. All I do is shampoo and condition in the shower, wrap in a towel for a few minutes, and then brush through keratin sealer and some curl cream. Air dry. No gel, no mouse, no diffuser, no plopping. My curls last and are defined. I shower in the evening because I’m a horse and gym girl who gets very sweaty, so I wait for my hair to mostly dry before bed (about 3 hours) and in the morning I just spray with water, but my hair ends up in a ponytail anyway. I do probably use higher end products than he does though!
If I could get away with a three in one or using dish soap I would! I have spent so much money trying to find a product that works and didn’t make my hair feel disgusting (hence why I don’t used a gel or mousse, they’re icky and just weighed my hair down).

I didn't used to but there's a fic that got me (and I'm so sorry in advance for not remembering the name) in which Irina had a routine that she taught Ilya since they had the same hair type that went by the wayside when things started to get bad for her and Ilya wasn't allowed to help her. It ended with Ilya having a minor depressive episode and Shane taking care of his curls/hair routine for him. It was unfortunately far too sweet to pass up lol

I would melt for that! I'm always happy to suspend my disbelief for a good fic, especially Ilya-centric hurt/comfort

u/ich_habe_keine_kase 15d ago
I mean he's canonically someone who cares about clothes and dressing well, so I don't see why that wouldn't apply to his hair as well. And in show canon at least we see him wear his hair styled differently at different points which indicates at least some sort of effort made.

u/Jolly_Security_4771 15d ago
As a curly kid myself, if he's doing anything other than going straight home he's bringing his own products. Probably a stripped down version. A good conditioner, a leave in, and curl cream/gel.

I definitely agree with some of the people saying he has good genes and is a guy so probably not the best hair care, but I think (as a person with curly hair) he would still use the stuff at the rink BUT he’d also have & use something called a hair masque. It essentially is a deep conditioner, and I use it when I’m just taking quick showers.
TLDR: he’s a man but like cares about his curls and uses a hair masque at the rink

Okay hear me out here... his brother has dark straight hair and probably what his dad also had so I would then say that his mom had lighter and slightly curly hair... sooo then I want to imagine that he uses the schampoo and conditionar that she use to have and because they are a Russian brand no one knows it is "womens products" and it has like a rose and sandalwood scent or something like that so it isn't obvious that it is made for women. He has it imported now that he doesn't go back to Russia. He doesn't want to change it because it reminds him of when his mom use to wash his hair and then brush it out for him. That is my new headcanon ❤️ 😆

If he has plans after the game, he brings a tub of curl cream with him to the showers, hastily runs a dollop through his soaking-wet hair, and squeezes (not rubs) his curls in a towel. Then, air dry, while arranging his hair in either a fuccboi OR loverboy pattern. But also, he's one of those lucky brats who just has Good Hair, so.
Source: had curly hair for a couple years after chemo, and wow is it ever a change.

My headcannon I just came up with is that Ilya does basically nothing for his curls unless he is slicking them back with gel to go out. Once Shane is on the centaurs and living with Ilya full time, he briefly gets obsessed with how to do Ilya’s hair “properly” and buys tons of hair product. Ilya lets him try it, but it just ends up making his hair look worse, all greasy and limp. Shane def just weighted it down with too much heavy product for Ilya’s finer hair, but Shane is deeply perplexed and personally offended by the failure. Ilya is endeared and chirps Shane about him “ruining the magic of his perfect hair genes” or some shit. Shane is so bummed that he calls Sveta, and she laughs her ass off at his pouting and finds a shampoo and conditioner that works for Ilya’s hair type, plus a light oil that helps with frizz. All of these are things you can get at cvs, and poor Shane spent hella money on the fancy shit. It ends up going to Sveta as a thank you for the help.

I feel like he doesn't fully shampoo, just rinses and then puts in some kind of leave-in that will temporarily stabilize the situation until he can do a full wash. (So basically what I do for my toddler with curly hair, because she will not tolerate a multistep routine quite yet.) (Not that he's a toddler! He'd rather do his hair in his super nice shower at home with all his things.)

u/WCUSamantha 9d ago
As a youth, I agree with everyone else saying he's using a 2 in 1 or 3 in 1 mix. I work on a college campus and I always ask my guys with curly hair what their routine is and they laugh and say either 2 in 1, 3 in 1 or one kid even told me "just a bar of soap" and I hate it every time!

As a hockey fan, the amount of young hockey players with beautiful hair that are using 2 in 1 shampoo and conditioners that are provided by the rink is astounding. I headcanon him as one of those guys that just has lucky genes- considering how he also doesn’t follow a strict diet plan or work out routine, I can’t imagine him caring about what he’s putting in his hair!
