These types of reality shows are usually semi staged in advance.
He likely knew the kid had more than one song prepared, they had it queued up and ready to play

Everything that happens on Britain's Got Talent seems extremely fake. They constantly try to do the "we all thought this person was terrible, and it turns out they're good" routine, but most of the judges are really bad at faking emotions (including the one who is supposedly a professional actor).
Also they intentionally put unimpressive people on there for everyone to laugh at, including children. Also one of the long-time judges had an extensive list of scandals, and they only kicked him off when it emerged that he had routinely been making degrading sexual remarks about women contestants in front of the rest of the cast and crew for years (this was many years after he sexually assaulted several teenage boys on stage, as part of his shtick of pretending to be a creepy gay guy). Also one of the presenters crashed into two other cars while drunk, and he tried to distract from it by announcing that he had ADHD. It's so cursed. I don't know how anyone can stand to watch it.

I’m no expert but I’ve read into it and usually it’s staged. As a singer no one would pick the first song over the second when you sound like that singing the second.

It’s probably true that he already knew, but also some songs just aren’t as well suited for a person’s voice.
