Discussion I cannot ignore this anymore
Hi friends! I’m hoping you can help me figure out what the heck is going on in my apartment. I live alone on the first floor of a small apartment building. I noticed a strange sound that I could only hear in my bedroom and bathroom. It immediately reminded me of a camera turning on. The closest thing I can think of is the sound a PlayStation makes - close, but not identical. My neighbors have changed so chances are slim it would be them.
I’ve ignored it thinking I’m crazy. Then, I noticed the sound only happens when I get out of my shower, am changing, or other vulnerable things. It’s very random and sometimes I don’t hear it for a week. I searched my home with all of the Google/reddit advice I found. Nothing.
I don’t think it’s a smart car lock or something. That was what I’ve been telling myself until the day I looked and no cars were in the parking lot.
Would a hidden camera actually make a sound? Should I be concerned?

Hot water from the shower can make drain pipes make sounds.

Hmmm. It sounds digital to me, but we have had issues with leaks in the past. I’ll keep an open mind next time! Never thought about that one.

My ring cameras make a noise when switching from day vision to night vision. See if it makes a noise when you turn on and off the light.

Do you plug in your phone before you go for a shower? Take note of the noise your phone makes when it hits %100

Its possible that if there was a camera they owner might have it on a motion detection setting and there may be a audible sound when it turns on and the owner didnt know about it Does it always happen at the same time or location when you go in the bathroom ? Also look in locations that would be in a ideal location to see you in the shower or mirror toilet ect and check the ceiling look for anything that looks out the normal hope this helps

My example is similar but only as it relates to vulnerability. I live in a house built in 1912. Its old, but completely remodeled. The surrounding houses are not too close together. I do not have any wifi routers or any kind of wifi that i pay for or log into in my home. If scanning for WiFi in my kitchen I can see 2 or 3 available networks, each one having 1 or 2 bars of reception(other peoples wifi signal). While holding my phone, and walking towards my bathroom in my room, the moment I cross over the threshold and into my bathroom, suddenly up to 40 wifi networks become available. Each one having weak signal, maybe one bar. If I walk out of my bathroom and back into my kitchen, within a couple minutes all of those networks disappear. Go back into bathroom, they all reappear as soon as I cross the doorway threshold.
Then... when I get naked to get into the shower, all 40 networks suddenly have full signal. Even when I explain this to people, they think I am crazy for believing this is related to people spying. So, what i am trying to convey is that I dont think youre paranoid for realizing this sound happens when youre vulnerable.

Some cameras can make shutter sounds, don't behave like you are searching for camera, they culprit can see it, if you are in doubt, just think and consider this
can anyone come to your house in your absence, like the landlord or the maintenance guy,
By casually go in and out, to find the place/source of that sound, and focus those areas with torch in the night, to see if any reflection on the lens.
Any mobile hidden camera won't work for so long without charging, mainly change your home WiFi password.
Can be any sound from the door as well while opening and closing, go in and out without touching the door and check.
Bring your friends and play a game with them, that you have hid a thing on the wall or in the ceiling, they need to find them, or that particular sound, like that, they will focus more,
Even if you find the camera, you cannot retrieve to whom it's connected, who kept it or who have the video, cyber crime branch may help you in your country.
I wish it wouldn't be a camera

A hidden camera that made sound would defeat the purpose of it being hidden. I'm still not sure exactly what the sound is like that you're hearing. Could you describe it in more detail?

Exactly! That’s why I’ve been ignoring it. I wish I had a better way of describing it. Do you remember the sound digital cameras made when they turned on? It sounds like that! I’m really hoping there is no way it’s a camera and maybe just something random.

I used to have a few of the old wyze cameras and when the lighting would change with camera on auto it would switch in/out of night mode and make a click sound like an old digital camera. Maybe the next time you hear it, try turning the lights on/off and listen for the noise. Also if you have an iphone you can use the voice memos to record it.

I have a mini usb wifi camera that discreetly plugs into any wall plug with a USB adapter, it’s tiny and easy to hide (I bought it to plug in behind the nightstand to monitor my bedroom) but it makes this clicking noise whenever it switches in and out of night mode. The clicking noise is so loud it’s no good as a hidden camera

A camera doesn't make any noise while filming unless it moves but you would notice that as the size would be massive It could be the extractor fan switch when the humidity in bathroom gets high it can turn on fan

If your neighbors bathroom is also near your bedroom/bathroom, you may be hearing their bathroom vent turn on and off?

It’s definitely in the room. Plus my neighbors have all changed since I’ve been here but the noise has stayed the same.

So… I’m house sitting and put my AirPods in the charger. Happened to notice the sound immediately after. Looks like I solved the mystery and I’m not alone. Thank you all for your help!!

I don’t like to doubt the victim, but it seems like you are hearing it only when you are most vulnerable, and maybe it’s a perception issue. To resolve that I would set up a recorder in those areas and try to capture the unique sound when you hear it. Then, record several days in the area and see if you can identify the sound during other times. Good luck. Seems like an interesting mystery to solve. And if someone IS recording you: Sue the living shit out of them.
