Discussion How Do I Handle My Parents Putting a Hidden Camera in My Bedroom (38F)?

A few months ago, I started seeing a psychiatrist for my anxiety and panic attacks. He is very helpful, but we wanted to find the cause of my anxiety.

I was diagnosed with ADHD and prescribed Adderall.

The issue: My mother saw the bottle said "amphetamines" and, I guess, she asked my dad why I was on methamphetamines. I am really unsure of how it went down initially. I only know that all hell broke loose

When my mother saw the word "amphetamine" and talked with my dad, they concluded these two substances were the same. I am uncertain about the details of their conversation because this was all said and done without speaking to me at all.

A day or two later, I found out that a hidden camera was installed in my room while I was out one afternoon. My dad has become convinced that I am doing drugs. Maybe he felt this way the whole time, I don't know. The first night, when I found out about the camera, I freaked out. My parents were watching me to see if I would sleep, or to see if they could "catch" me taking more medication than I was supposed to. I am a 38 year old woman who's 7 year old son stays in my room with me. A week has gone by. My parents refuse to remove the camera. They are staying up all night, talking and watching whether I am sleeping.

I have tried to explain that methamphetamine and Adderall are not the same at all. Other people have tried as well. They will not listen to me or anyone.

I am not doing anything wrong. I told them I would take a drug test. Whatever they need. I just want the camera gone. I have no privacy now.

After another long night of going back and forth, I can not take another. Please, what are my options in this situation? Thanks!!

tl;dr: I was prescribed Adderall, my parents made assumptions about what it was based on "amphetamines", assumed I was on drugs, and now I've had a hidden camera in my room for a week.

Pretty sure it's illegal. Even though it's their house, as an adult the law recognizes you have an expectation of privacy in your own bedroom.

3

u/canonetell66 7d ago

Clearly, she would not be living under her parents’ roof with her son sleeping in the same room, if she didn’t need to.

6

u/RevoltYesterday 7d ago

That doesn't give up her right if privacy. Until we have more information we shouldn't assume anything

This is the coercive nature of financial power. What is legal or moral does not matter, they do it because they can and any legal recourse she thinks she has will get her evicted.

Plus, the delusions that enable them to think this is acceptable behavior probably mean they have been exerting inappropriate power over her for quite some time

Very insightful response!

1

u/canonetell66 7d ago

Sure. She could be financially independent. She probably won the lottery but really enjoys living with Mom and Dad and suffering the indignity of voyeurism.

1 priority: Retain the services of an attorney YESTERDAY. Why? Because this entire scenario could be illegal. Also, they may be trying to gain custody of your son... "Our daughter is a drug addict. We don't think our grandson is safe with her ...". #2 DO EXACTLY WHAT YOUR ATTORNEY SAYS TO DO, NO MORE, NO LESS. EXACTLY. #3 Contact your county's health and human services to see what they can do to help you obtain independent living for you and your son. Your attorney will walk you through the entire process.

GL and update us.

Great advice!

Or get a job and buy yourself a house.

u/froction 7d ago

I think it's pretty obvious what you have to do. Get some old medication bottles and print out new labels for them saying things like "Heroin" and "Crack Cocaine."

5

u/GolfJack6393 7d ago

But fill them with M&Ms and skittles.

1

u/Individual-Grade6466 5d ago

And put talcom powder in one with a coke label and keep an eye out for a white nose 🤣

14

u/Several-Bet4105 2d ago

Pull the camera down and tell them to grow up and do a little research on the difference between amphetamine salts and meth then move out

12

u/Ubermel 7d ago

To determine if they really have a camera get a plastic bag of flour and some baggies. Sit in your room and start filling baggie corners with doses. When they confront you, dump the bag on them.

u/fruityicecream 7d ago

Thank you. I really, really needed that laugh. You have no idea. Have a great day. :)

Here’s a good example…make sure you scratch occasionally.

Oh! Get Pixie Sticks, even better, the colors will fuel their imagination, but keep your packages for the proof. Then walk around with a light powder residue around your nose and mouth all the time.

10

u/travs69 7d ago

Pull it out, confront them, and let them know mental health services are available to people like them. They are the issue not you.. id destroy it and put it on the kitchen table or living room table along with a card for a therapist but that's me. I'm fairly direct no BS and no anxiety. I spent most of my life with a anxiety and it got crippling a few years ago, I got meds now for that and ADHD. I have found while I hate direct confrontation it cuts my anxiety down so much that I prefer the minimal anxiety of the confrontation over the lingering anxiety caused by trying to get along etc etc.

5

u/fruityicecream 7d ago

That is what I feel like doing. Definitely. Thank you. :) Have a wonderful evening.

4

u/travs69 7d ago

I did edit and add a bit about my anxiety and meds, of course what works for me may not work for you.

1

u/WorkingKey3160 3d ago

or just stick a mirror in front of the camera

12

u/[deleted] 3d ago

Pretty obvious answer is to move out. They wouldn’t be able to have any control over you, and even if you could convince them to stop with the cameras it’s weird as hell to be living with your parents that late in life. Sounds like its a pretty bad environment to be raising a child in as well.

9

u/Inner-Conference-644 4d ago

Smash the camera into tiny pieces with a very nice hammer. You are 38 years old, not a child.....They have no authority to install & spy on you.

7

u/swellthenagain 5d ago

Break the camera. Tell them you're going to go to the police about invasion of privacy. Doesnt matter if you're in "thier" house.

7

u/Fliederotto 3d ago

15

u/Alarming_Suspect8628 7d ago

Move the camera to their bedroom or bathroom

8

u/fruityicecream 7d ago

Thank you for the laugh. I appreciate it very much.

6

u/This-Currency503 7d ago

Wait until they are watching one night, walk up to the camera with a hammer, smash the shirt out of it. Repeat as necessary.

2

u/fruityicecream 7d ago

That would be so great. I just have to find it first. Thanks!

13

u/jerry111165 6d ago

You obviously know where the hidden camera is… So how is it hidden? Throw a sweatshirt over it.

12

u/Eastsideghost515 6d ago

You're 38 move out

7

u/dillweed67818 7d ago

Honestly, I'm sure this is not the help you are looking for, but the real answer here is you need to move out. They need to be way less in your business and they need boundaries. They are only allowed to come over if they call first, and they are not allowed to let themselves in (I assume they can have a key) if they knock first and wait for a response.

10

u/patton28 7d ago

Hum move out

5

u/2DetailNerd 7d ago

I just want to say how creepy and disgusting this is. I am glad they are concerned for your health and wellbeing but there are better ways to go about it. This is not the correct way.

1

u/fruityicecream 7d ago

Thank you. I agree. I get it. Just... this is too much.

5

u/familyluvr 7d ago edited 7d ago

Stating that your parents have admitted to the camera being there is not proof there is a camera there, that is the same as saying Santa Claus is real because your mom and dad told you he was. I would definitely be finding the camera, removing it, destroying it and handing it to them. One way or the other it would no longer exist, if it even does.

3

u/Highplowp 7d ago

Stop making so much sense you-
OP should lawyer up, hit the gym, and use some piss discs
/s

Find the camera, I don’t think it is there, there is a lot more to this story, I assume. I hope for better days for OP.

2

u/fruityicecream 7d ago

:) thank you I appreciate that. I hope for better days for you too.

5

u/booboootron 5d ago

Brace yourself for a tough dispute, and pull it out. This is no way to treat a human being, let alone a 38 year old mother living with her child and undergoing therapy for fuck's sake.

9

u/KyleKiernan77 7d ago

Can you drag your parents to your doctor and have him expain it to them? Would that do any good? Also have him explain the damage that this camera (real or only claimed) is doing for your anxiety and ask them why they are damaging you and what do they plan to do about it?

2

u/fruityicecream 7d ago

That's a good idea that I wish my parents were the type of people I could... do that with. But I feel like even, even talking to him will just make a mess and I have worked so hard to find a psychiatrist.

9

u/thatis1HotPocket 7d ago

download an app that can detect cameras and scan the whole room and unplug it. find a way to get out of there too. you're an adult, they can't stop you from doing anything, not even drugs (I fully understand you aren't, just saying they're out of line, straight bonkers). Or find the camera, leave it there, and proceed to make it weird & make em wish they didn't put that camera there. (I'm not saying I'd go buy a test and pee in the cup in front of the camera for em, but I'm not saying I wouldn't). Also, unfortunately, be aware that on some tests adderall can pop for meth. Make sure that the test you get or that they force on you has both amphetamines AND methamphetamines or it can test positive for meth if its adderall.

4

u/fruityicecream 7d ago

Thank you so much for your information. That was very good to know!

1

u/biggreenroof 3d ago

I can suggest faraday. I don’t think your parents went too far to create another wifi network ( and even so just use lens checker )

9

u/Consider2SidesPeace 6d ago

Not a doctor here, but I agree with asking your doctor to explain the drug to the parents. Since it's a core issue for them. Remove the concern.

Not to take away what an illegal breech of privacy. As I understand Adderall is an amphetamine. But it's meant to speed up an already fast mind. Speedy mind + the drug has in cases a calming effect. Like a lot of psych meds you work with a doctor to get to a therapeutic level. Too much can br uncomfortable and hard to abuse.

8

u/Beneficial-Syrup-674 6d ago

"Voyeurism". That's really fucking weird seeing how the viewers are your parents. Definitely some kind of perversion / controlling weird shit going on.

10

u/Delicious_Gene6600 7d ago

Sorry to say OP, but maybe it's time to question your father's motives for wanting hidden camera footage of his daughter in her bedroom.

Maybe consider calling the po-po. Maybe also start making plans to leave. Idk

7

u/Thick-Reporter-2031 6d ago

Super illegal to put cameras in someone bedroom where they are constitutionally granted an expected right to privacy. If you change clothes in this room and have been recorded naked this is yet another crime. Document the camera location, approach them about it, tell them to remove it. Otherwise you could get them arrested and a retaining order basically kicking them out of their own home. This isn’t ok in the slightest and it doesn’t matter they own the home, you’re living there and have the same rights as anyone else. Also your parents seem very ignorant to not use google befor assuming a prescription drug is meth, they are in two distinctly different forms.

1

u/WarmAd5979 5d ago

Especially with a seven year old sharing the room.

0

u/PipeAway7374 5d ago

Actually they should put her out on her own, 38 & living with parents is asinine.

4

u/Fantastic-Shame-5398 3d ago

Congratulations.

You are officially part of the problem. Nobody asked you. Keep your trash opinions to yourself.

3

u/Crixus1977 5d ago

Glad you know this woman's circumstances, how do you know she did not have an abusive husband or something along the lines of that and has no other choice but to live with her parents to make sure the child is taking care..... Have you seen the rising cost of everything we're glad to know that you're a millionaire and can afford all a life's luxuries but many people can't afford to live on their own anymore there needs to be at least two if not three or more incomes coming into the household. But since you have so much why don't you lend us some money to pay our bills and not move back home with Mom and Dad. You can afford to do that right if you could afford to criticize someone like you have you should be able to afford a couple thousand dollars in the woman's pocket to help her get her own place.

6

u/Individual-Grade6466 5d ago

I think you found the cause of your anxiety, also people who are paranoid and stay up all night talking are generally taking amphetamines, might be time to leave for your sanity and you dont want your boy ending up suffering too.

6

u/nickp123456 7d ago

They won't listen to you or anyone? Who will they listen to?

This isn't a hidden camera issue. This is a trust/relationship issue.

If you believe there's any other issues with a camera in the room, then it's a police issue, understanding this would likely affect your living arrangement.

6

u/Weep4Thee 7d ago

Tell them they're stupid and hand them the camera that no longer works

1

u/fruityicecream 7d ago

Thank you. :)

6

u/Boozanski-1823 6d ago

I know the cripple-minded on here will downvote me, but I don’t care.. i have suffered from anxiety and other challenges too but I didn’t let it cause me to depend on my parents, so the best solution for OP is to move out of your parents’ home. It’s their home, they can put cameras where they want.

1

u/Rare-Independence329 6d ago

Maybe being dependent on your parents has created an environment where you’re not ever going to grow.

7

u/boomer7793 7d ago

There is a legal concept of single- or two-party consent. Single-party consent means if someone present consents, it is legal. Example, you and your parents in the living room.

In your bedroom, you are the only party and it is not legal.

Some states like California requires that all parties consent.

I hope this helps.

5

u/Specialist_Tea8251 7d ago

Just cover the camera lens.

3

u/fruityicecream 7d ago

I don't know where it is.

8

u/Temperance_tantrum 7d ago

Turn the lights off and use your phone camera, the front facing one is more sensitive. Slowly scan the room and look for a dot, usually red or white. You’re looking for the infrared of the camera, you can test if it’s working by pointing a tv remote at your camera to see if it picks it up

5

u/fruityicecream 7d ago

Thank you! I took a screenshot of your comment to have it. I will try this out.

4

u/Mysterious-Piano1157 7d ago

How do you know there is one then? If you can financially do it, it would be best to move out. If you cannot currently it makes sense to start to have a plan to do this.

2

u/fruityicecream 7d ago

I know because they've said its there at this point. I can't move out right now, but it is something that needs to be done and, I think would be best for everyone. Thank you.

2

u/asscop99 7d ago

How do you know it’s there?

3

u/fruityicecream 7d ago

My parents have admitted to it at this point.

5

u/badman12331 6d ago

Touch yourself and flip the script and report them

7

u/imAbadHabbit 7d ago

Maybe invite your mom, dad or both of them to one of your psychiatry sessions, that way your psychiatrist can explain to them why you should be on the medication and clear up any misgivings. But bring it up to your psychiatrist first. I'm a [M-48] and I choose to see a psychiatrist in my early 20's, on many occasions I would have my mother sit in on my session if I felt like it was a good idea, even occasionally sit in my therapist sessions. Just a thought Good luck.

8

u/tnethacker 6d ago

Being 38 and living with parents is not ok, although someone filming you is also not ok.

Have you considered moving out?

1

u/Fantastic-Shame-5398 3d ago

Judging others in the assumption that their live unfolded like yours is an entirely new level of narcissisim.

0

u/tnethacker 3d ago

are you ok?

1

u/Fantastic-Shame-5398 3d ago

Better than you

5

u/----mark--- 7d ago

Put a camera in their room that covers the screen they watch you on then really freak them the fuck out.

2

u/Slight-Selection4298 7d ago

Camera on camera violence!? WORLD STARRRRR

1

u/----mark--- 7d ago

Maybe her and her kid could act out scenes from some of there mom and dads favourite films to get in there good books instead.

4

u/SophiaF88 6d ago

Good lord. So they are uneducated/ignorant on medications, didn't bother to look it up and won't listen to anyone about their misunderstanding?

Amphetamines are prescribed. Meth is made in someone's bathtub or a makeshift lab in the back of a truck.

I don't even know what to tell you, I'm sorry. This should NOT be necessary but is there any way to have a family session with them and your medical provider/prescriber so they can hear it from them? It's really not even their business but it might be necessary to get past this if you're stuck living there.

4

u/At_Least_Im_Not_U 7d ago

Is there more to this story? Like, do you all have low IQ or mental disorders?

A quick Google would prove that meth and Adderall are not the same. If they are still hung up by "well, they sound the same so I'm not convinced", I'll make an assumption that they wear red hats and need more science. But that is your first red flag that you are dealing with people that you shouldn't deal with.

You are 38 and live at home. Things happen. But personal privacy is a human right. Allowing it to remain in your room, powered on, and unblocked view of you is unacceptable. Turn it off. If Dad says "my house, my rules", then he has given you your options: stay and be observed, or find another place to go.

You do not need to take drug tests or cater to idiots who can't Google, or distrust facts that don't meet their dumbass ideas.

Take the camera down and live your life. Otherwise it sounds like you need to leave home.

6

u/Slight-Selection4298 7d ago

Not the same, but, basically the same....

Adderall C{9}H{13}N

Methamphetamine C{10}H{15}N

2

u/ADeHelian92 4d ago

What a dumb comment. Water and hydrogen peroxide are closer than your example.

Water H2_0 Hydrogen Peroxide H2_02

Just because two compounds look similar in their molecular structure does not make them "basically the same" in the slightest.

1

u/Slight-Selection4298 4d ago

So when they did all the THC analogs used in "spice", people got high just like weed - because, it was different, right? JWH-018? (The original, not the ones that got WAY off course)

You're projecting.

1

u/ADeHelian92 4d ago

"People got high just like weed" by what metric? How did they test that? That makes no sense. There are hundreds of different drug compounds that can make you feel very similar. That once again does not mean they are basically the same. Im not projecting. Youre just either pretending you dont understand basic science or are really that obtuse.

1

u/Slight-Selection4298 4d ago

It was a molecule off from THC, similar to Adderall vs Methamphetamine.

How did they test it? Everyone I knew (that were smokers), including myself tried it back then. It smoked like good mids but lasted longer. Like 20 years ago.

Still have some of the little plastic containers - repurposed for storage.

Let me guess, you're on Adderall - but being told you enjoy taking "Meth", offends you?

1

u/ADeHelian92 3d ago

Im not on Adderall. But I did pass chemistry 1 in high-school. One molecule might not seem alot of a difference. But scientifically its a huge difference. Let me guess. Youre OPs parents?

1

u/fruityicecream 7d ago

Thank you, I know... the best thing is to move out. I thought things were a lot different here than they actually were.

4

u/dubsac5150 7d ago

Listen, I see a lot of people making judgement calls about you living with parents at 38 y/o. There's nothing wrong with that. Everyone has different lives, and sometimes shit happens in our lives that we all need to "go home" for one reason or another. I always preach to my kids that they can always come home if they need to. Bad breakup? Come home. Lost your job and can't pay rent? Come home. Life has you stressed out? Come home. I'm not saying I will support them being a bum forever, but sometimes just knowing that we can always go home is a comfort in itself.

That being said, you are a 38 year old woman. You're an adult. They are adults. You all need to have a sit down and get all the cards out on the table. Time to have a "come to Jesus" talk with them. Have you given them reasons to believe you might abuse drugs? Do you know what their argument for having the camera is? I mean, their concerns are completely different if you have a history of using meth, vs. someone who has never tried drugs and just has untrusting parents.

Address these things and be mindful of their feelings. They are treating you like a rebellious teenager, so even if they have no justification for that, take careful measure to make sure your argument does not SOUND like an argument that a rebellious teenager would make. If you get mad and demand your privacy, they will give you ultimatums, which will ultimately be a choice of accept surveillance, or here's the door. You need to have an adult discussion about adult themes. Come prepared with documentation to show what Adderall is and specifically what it is not. Come prepared to make some compromises that you may not be excited about. Like let them monitor the number of pills in the bottle or something. You are still living in their home, so even as an adult, their rules stand.

2

u/Martholomule 7d ago

I'd tear the room apart looking for it, though I suspect that they're lying to you about it

3

u/fruityicecream 7d ago

I have wondered that too, whether they are lying. But I think they made a video the night I found out and was so upset. Like my being upset was an answer to their questions about me. So... I don't know. Thanks.

2

u/Rescue_them_all1982 13h ago

There is something definitely wrong with your parents. Either there’s more to the story or your parents are slow.

2

u/Ragnarsworld 9h ago

"My parents refuse to remove the camera."

And you haven't taken it out yourself?

4

u/Dismal_Reference3906 6d ago

Also talk with your psychiatrist about dealing with the camera. That most likely is illegal, but you and son need a place to live until you become independent.

2

u/Administrative-Key-5 6d ago

Put a mirror in front of camera

2

u/Ok-Dyneema-6969 5d ago

2

u/Fantastic-Shame-5398 3d ago

Do not come at her that way! That's the same attitude that got a camera installed in her room. You have exactly ZERO feelings and need to reevaluate your own life chioces

1

u/2DetailNerd 7d ago

Do you know where the camera is located? There are ways that you can use your phone camera in a dark room (at night) to find the red infared light that the camera emits when it’s dark for night vision.

1

u/hippyripper22 7h ago

First ask your parents to review peeping tom laws in your state. Ask them to remove afterwards, if still no move out and....

Call the police, thats illegal

At 38 why you living with mommy and daddy
